'Earthworks' is Thom Brookes' debut album as Drombeg, following his acclaimed EP ‘Notes From The Ocean Floor’ in 2015. A soundtrack for the middle-of-nowhere, the wild landscapes of Brookes' native Southern Ireland are littered with historic (Tumulus), and geological (Béarra) structures hardened under the relentless elements. Sinuous string melodies, and tender piano phrases reach like sunlight breaking through heavy clouds, blended with electronics and field recordings in careful balance to produce a rich cinematic sound.

Over several years, Guenter Schlienz has graced labels such as Constellation Tatsu, Sacred Phrases, S.I.N.K. CDs, SicSic, Preservation so we are very excited here at Rural Colours to be added to that list with his latest work Peace.

After noticing that several friends had begun to end emails marked 'Peace', Guenter Schlienz, ever full of questions, started to ponder on the meaning of the word in this context.  Around the same time he started to read Henry Miller's book 'The Collossus of Maroussi' and was intrigued by a couple of paragraphs devoted to exactly this question: what is "the meaning of peace". He came to the conclusion that there is much more to "peace" than just the absence of war.  The albums track titles are words by Henry Miller, and the work is Guenter's humble attempt to gather sounds and atmospheres around those lines.

Using modular synths combined with tape loops, analog and digital delays, vintage electronic organ and guitar, Schlienz works within a romantically inward looking framework, creating music that comes from deep within.  His compositions reflect themes of tenderness, alienation and homecoming and feature a range of guest musicians including Masako Kamikawa (piano on  'Reverberation of the Pandemonium') and Niko Lazarakopoulos (guitar on 'Faint Whispers') and even an anonymous busker from the streets of Stuttgart on 'Who Put the Demons There?'

Guenter Schlienz / Peace (Snippets)

Berlin based cellist and composer Anne Müller shares a second piece, 'Drifting Circles', ahead of her long awaited debut solo album 'Heliopause'.

'Heliopause' follows several Erased Tapes releases featuring Anne, including her celebrated collaboration with Nils Frahm titled 7fingers, appearances on Ólafur Arnalds & Nils Frahm’s Collaborative Works, Nils Frahm’s All Melody and his acclaimed soundtrack for the film Victoria, Lubomyr Melnyk’s Fallen Trees, as well as the two bespoke solo pieces Walzer für Robert and Bel Tono for the label’s 5th and 10th anniversary box sets. In fact, a glance at Müller’s Discogs boasts credits on over 60 releases since she began recording in 2007.

Classically trained at Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts under the renowned cellist and conductor Michael Sanderling, Anne Müller performed as a cellist in many of Berlin’s symphonies for some time before choosing a different path with her music and focussing on novel approaches to classical instrumentation. A profound believer in the power of artistic collaboration, Anne’s skilled cello playing and instinctive composition became extremely sought after.

Following her work with Nils Frahm, an enduring partnership with singer-songwriter-composer Agnes Obel ensued, touring for five years together and featuring on two albums (Philharmonics and Aventine) and most recently, working with multi-instrumentalist Markus Sieber (aka Aukai) on his 2019 album Reminiscence. In between all this, Müller also co-founded the progressive live project Solo Collective along with violinist/singer Alex Stolze and pianist/conceptual artist Sebastian Reynolds, releasing Solo Collective Part One in 2017.

A solo record in every sense of the word, Müller wrote, recorded, arranged and produced Heliopause. The album is named after the boundary where the sun’s wind ceases to have influence. It is ultimately, the border of our solar system. The name struck a chord with Müller since the two voyagers sent on an exploratory mission 42 years ago, recently crossed the Heliopause, entering into interstellar space and losing power from our own sun. Müller recognised herself in this moment, not only approaching the same age, but also breaking new ground; having relied on collaborating with so many other stars and now venturing into the unknown with her first solo statement; “Heliopause marks the end of a long journey but also the start of voyages to explore strange new worlds”

Both as the closing title track and album as a whole, Heliopause crosses these physical and invisible borders throughout, sending the cello as a typically classical instrument to exciting new and uncharted territory.

Finally! After years of releases on some of the most important labels in electronic music, DFA's Juan Maclean makes his debut on Correspondant with his glorious Manthony EP.

Four slabs of thumping cosmic disco; all modulating basslines and heavy chug dynamics, Juan is a man of many styles but it's clear he's tailored these especially for Jennifer Cardini's label. The primordial acidic soup of opener 'Manthony', the cloud-bouncing dreaminess of 'Bufomania', the tense bewitching adventure of 'She's Breaking Up' (with the purring cat-like vocals of Fantastic Twins) and the creepy, ever-mutating pranged out finale 'In A Minute'.

As an artist who states that DJing is "literally my favourite thing in life", Juan Maclean has once again delivered a collection of transcendent dancefloor moments for both DJs and Dancers alike.

I Wanna Lose

Adriaan de Roover, who is also known as Oaktree (check out a few of his excellent mixes for Headphone Commute), announces a new EP, titled Voor anderen, with which he joins a Belgian imprint, Dauw. The label has been on the forefront of delicate ambient music, working with graphic artist Femke Strijbol "to create a unique hand-made piece of art that flatters both the ear and the eye." With this new release, they welcome Maarten De Naeyer as a new in-house graphic designer to continue the visual identity while opening up the door to new artists. I continue to be happy with their choice of album covers, which "engage interactions between different art disciplines." The work of Adriaan nicely slots among the label's catalogue, with its soft blurry hues of minimalism, micro-drone and environmental sound. On the EP, elegantly combined organic textures blend with their electronic parallels, sweeping the wide-ranging frequency spectrum across glitters and bass. The selection features commissioned pieces between 2015-2018 "merging feelings of distance and proximity into melancholic sonic entities."

Sleep brought with it much needed respite, an escape from his thoughts and emotions. Of late, his dreams had become much more vivid, rife with strange exchanges and far-fetched situations that left a stamp on his waking hours. Amongst the warped and familiar faces he felt both bliss and terror, yet at times he still wished he could stay in this imagined reality.

Danish producer Kasper Bjørke takes a personal approach when it comes to remixes, focusing on enlisting artists who will transform his music into something original and bring their own distinct flavour. His next batch of remixes comes in a two part package, bringing together several artists to put their own spin on his double EP Nothing Gold Can Stay. Part B rallies the likes of Bawrut, Cooper Saver, Panthera Krause, Kasper Marrott and our pick from DFA affiliate Perel.

Durrty Goodz pays tribute to his friend and collaborator TY (Ben Chijioke) in the heartfelt song ‘The Real Ones’, featuring cuts by Shortee Blitz.

TY was a foundation pillar of the UK Hip Hop scene, inspiring myriad artists. Whilst many knew TY for his lyrical ability, few are aware of his production skills, developed alongside longtime collaborator Drew Horley.

It was for that very reason Goodz decided to highlight the fact by using the instrumental version of TY’s own song ‘Me’, taken from his 2010 BBE album ‘Special Kind of Fool’.

Durrty Goodz is a highly respected grime MC, rapper and activist from London, active in the scene since 2003. Under his ‘OG Roots’ alias, he collaborated with on 2018 track ‘Eyes Open’, which was featured on TY’s final album ‘Work Of Heart’.
