For almost two decades, I have been tirelessly seeking honesty in music. I aim to find the sounds with which the artist speaks. Soundscapes that make you feel. Atmospheres that not only fill your room (and headphones) but truly transport you into another time and place. I will never forget the first time I heard Abul Mogard’s music. I was mesmerised. His intricate attention to sound design, rich textures, and manipulation of the created environment instantly transformed me into an avid fan. His music didn’t just augment my mood; it seemed to seep into my being, altering the code behind the perception of my mind. I didn’t just listen to his music, I invited it to be a part of my condition. In an effort to delve deeper and spend more time with such music, and more importantly, the composers themselves,  I created Headphone Community, where I feature an artist for an in-depth exploration. In the last three months, I’ve highlighted the sounds of James Murray, Ben Chatwin, and Erik K Skodvin. Today, I am honoured to announce that Abul Mogard will be the featured artist for the entire month of June! The latest @fragilex album brings new meaning to the term “labour of love”. It’s an album that’s been in the works for quite some time. The album is inspired by a long term obsession with fractals and their never ending possibilities.

The original production process on the “Curves and Calculus” album began back in 2018 and in the 7 years since its original inception it has morphed and splintered in many directions to allow all the parts of the puzzle to fall into place.

The finished article is a musical maze, brimming with all manner of corridors and pathways to explore. Pulling in inspirations from every angle of the electronic spectrum and integrating them into a mesmerising journey full of colour, serenity and warmth.

We enter and end the trip in an ambient mood but along the way there’s a nod to the psychedelic aspect that is so often associated with fractals, when we take on a trippier tone as the tracks burst into life through twists of intricate drums and flashes of glowing energy and shifts in motion. Mirroring the boundless nature and expansion of infinity.

All the shapes we experience come lined with effervescent melodies, glitchy sonic backdrops, glassy textures and a constant propulsive motion. Always kinetic, looking for the next move, like the fractal.

“Curves and Calculus” is an audio landscape that is constantly evolving. No real beginning, no real end. A symphony of infinite equations.

There are a few collaborations that work really well. And, when something works well, why not double down? Two years ago [I almost said last November], Markus Guentner and Joachim Spieth came together for a full-length release on Spieth's own Affin imprint. This was more than just their initial conversation, which appeared on Kompakt's Pop Ambient's 2022 installment. Overlay was full of lush texture and ambience, which gently tickled the sensitive nerve endings in my ear canal, leaving my brain to decipher the signals into analgesic pleasantries. This year, the duo returns with a follow-up full-length release, delving deeper into atmospheric soundscapes, punctuating them with a dub-inspired heart-pounding beat. Fans of hypnotic, kaleidoscopic, and sonically rich environments will surely want to lose themselves in the caverns of this all-encompassing sound. If you are a fan [as much as I am] of their solo works, you will find that here, together, the multiplier is higher. They're truly at the top of their art here, so let's put on a heavy ADS for a fully submersible voyage. A subwoofer is recommended.

§ (section) is a reflection — a flashback to the raw, underground energy of the post-Covid rave era,
before the scene became saturated with mainstream trends and commercial aesthetics. It’s a call to
remember what the dancefloor used to feel like: intimate, intense, and unfiltered.
The EP The Last Wish draws inspiration from the video game narrative in which, at the very end, a
portal sends you back to the beginning. That cyclical motion mirrors the artist’s final wish: to return
to the roots — to the sweat-drenched warehouses, to the uncompromising sound, to the
underground. This is not nostalgia for the sake of it — it’s a sonic rebellion. A time loop. A ritual.
A last wish to rewind the scene.
Accompanying the three original § (section) tracks are remixes from a trio of underground
disruptors: Tunnel, Violent, and 2+2=5. Each brings their own strain of industrial techno chaos —
from Tunnel’s mechanical pulse and cavernous atmospheres to Violent’s scorched-earth distortion
and breakneck pressure, to 2+2=5’s bleak, experimental deconstructions. These aren’t just remixes
— they’re mutations. Warped reflections of the original vision, dragged deeper into the warehouse
void. Together, they push the § (section) mythology further into the shadows, amplifying the raw
intensity of the contemporary circuit.
