"The strenuous conquest of the top, the splendor of a landscape that slowly reveals in its dazzling beauty. In his new work, the Venetian based composer, guitarist and field recorder Enrico Coniglio leads us once again among his loved ones mountains: an epic landscape in which enchantment and fear are deeply intertwined. He chooses to do so offering us the sound as a sensory canvas of an imaginary enterprise with deliberately indefinite contours.

"Alpine variations" is a further step in the sound research carried out by the author in a long and complex path built over time inspired by environmental and atmospheric sounds.

A bewitching narrative emerges from the intersection of bright harmonic textures and dense ambient vapors crossed by restless shadows. The individual parts of this narration represent the stages of an ascent that is at the same time physical and spiritual. It is a nostalgic plot that in the partial roughness of its resonances returns the sense of precariousness of a bumpy path, poised between quiet contemplation and impending danger. 

The cinematic approach constantly reveals the genesis of an album originally built on a series of recordings dedicated to the creation of a film sound commentary that finally become an autonomous itinerary. Finally, all that remains is to close your eyes and prepare to face the journey".

Handstitched* is thrilled to announce the next installment of the split-artist series, Ian Hawgood and Fields We Found feature alongside each other for an outing of outstanding musical composure and tranquility. 

Ian's music needs little introduction, with many releases and collaborations under his belt on numerous well-known labels - to say he's prolific is pretty close to the mark. Ian also curates the wonderful Home Normal label, here in the UK. "upward eyes" is seriene, slow-moving and hauntingly subtle, prolonged space fills the moments we frequently overlook and leaves time for reflection during a quiet time spent in an open space. We are honoured to have his debut EP "upward eyes" featuring on Handstitched*. 

Fields We Found has just released his outstanding album "Distance" on the lovely Seil Records, which has been on constant rotation here at Handstitched* over the past month - and the new EP "kindred" is equally as moving, graceful and bewitching. The equilibrium and expression within "kindred" is harmonious - and at the same time, quietly sonorous.

Fields We Found and Ian Hawgood are both welcomed to Handstitched* with many thanks and admiration for their respective musical works as part of the split-artist series, it's great to have them visiting Handstitched* for this special release.

Our second mix is being released on Global Drone Day, an event created by Marie LeBlanc Flanagan of Weird Canada (https://droneday.org). This mix includes a new track by Chihei Hatakeyama from his forthcoming album, "Thousand Oceans," which will be released on Dronarivm in June on LP, CD, and digitally.

The mix, compiled by yours truly, Dmitry T., features tracks from various recent releases in the contemporary ambient/drone scene. These tracks have been a source of inspiration for me, and I hope they do the same for you. Drone on!

Aether #002 by Dronarivm

It makes sense to kick off this TRACK PREMIERE with a quick [re-]introduction to Malcolm Pardon, who, although appeared on these pages as a solo artist with his debut album Hello Death (The New Black, 2021), may be more familiar to you as one half of Roll The Dice, along with Peder Mannerfelt. Unlike the Swedish duo's gorgeous sonic onslaught that captivated these pages (see In Dust and Until Silence from over a decade ago), Pardon's solo musings are more in the vein of deconstructed melancholia, with the solo piano progressions held up by cinematic atmospheres and themes. "Like the romantic notion of the orchestra on board the Titanic playing their repertoire as the ship went down, on The Abyss, he looks past the bleak or macabre to observe death as a multi-layered, lifelong acquaintance." On "Side Effects", we are faced with a pseudo-neutral message of a neo-classical nature, at times evoking echoes of Radiohead, at others creating a false sense of optimism, with a darker undertone lurking just beneath the veil. This becomes more evident as you progress through the album, followed by "The End", landing upon "Enter the Void" (you can check out an unsettling video by the Swedish director Oskar Wrangö here - be warned that it includes images that some viewers may find distressing), and finally concluding with the "Aftermath". The music on The Abyss is celebrating our demise, and just like the distressing notion of your own inevitable passing, it is disquieting, beautiful and final. For now, enjoy the "Side Effects".

The spirit of this album is introspection, the ability to stop everything around for a few seconds and reflect.

The absence of a common good as humanity. I believe that the proliferation of neoliberal governments and supranational corporations has brought a suffocating work logic, where productivity is god and workers are sacrificed to this deity, leading to the hyper-individualization of the person, where others are seen as outsiders to be defeated.

We are no longer part of something larger but have become an end in ourselves.

I see the widespread apathy toward the suffering of others as a consequence of the exaltation of the self over the communal. Thinking about others, being empathetic, requires time — time I cannot dedicate if all I think about is myself.

Today, the social mandate is to reach an unattainable potential, creating a constant state of frustration in individuals.

This idea of "being your own brand" turns us into just another item on the market shelf, where our social relationships lose sight of belonging, empathy, and the common good.

Institutions no longer represent us; everything is regulated by this post-modern and neoliberal logic.

To dedicate time to others, without expecting anything in return, is an act of resistance today.

If you recall, exactly a month ago, on November 3rd, I have premiered a track by Roger Goula from the upcoming Various Artists compilation, titled Ambient Layers, which is scheduled to be released tomorrow, December 4th, on 7K! imprint. I retrace my words and see that I was processing the news about a second lockdown in the UK. Well, yesterday the stores have opened up again. So at least the government has kept its word and did not stretch it further. But things, of course, are not the same. It’s still suppressed, a little cold, a little dark, and slightly empty. And as the city’s waking up, I’ve got this beauty of a track to share and get us ready for another round. I hope that you have recognized this American [and Brussels-based] composer from his name alone. If not, let me remind you of his work with Brian McBride as Stars Of The Lid; with Christina Vantzou as The Dead Texan; and of course, with Dustin O’Halloran as A Winged Victory For The Sullen. And I’m not even diving into details of his film-scoring credits, which include Jóhann Jóhannsson and his Golden Globe-winning soundtrack for The Theory of Everything. Adam Wiltzie‘s most recent collaborative work, with its absolutely gorgeous contemporary classical and cinematic ambient treatments, and stunning live performances, has even got the monumental Ninja Tune to join on the party. For this single piece, Wiltzie revisits an earlier recording, a slow-burner of an orchestral immersion, reworked to the perfect intersection of where the neoclassical and ambient sounds reside.


‘How To Disappear Inside A Thirty Piece Orchestra’, was recorded in Budapest in 2014. It is an excerpt from the first recording of the Stars of the Lid follow up to ‘And Their Refinement of the Decline’. Subsequently, this piece was abandoned and left in the lurch as time elapsed. After some contemplation, Adam is letting the world have a taste of what could have never been, and what is possibly yet to come.


The compilation is already available for pre-order, and from the tracklisting alone, you can see that it’s an impressive roster of artists coming together to showcase the genre. Among the featured artists on the release, my favorites include Ryan Teague, Tilman Robinson, Robert Lippok, Michel Banabila & Machinefabriek, Pjusk, and Midori Hirano, and plenty others to discover along the way. This could be a beautiful opener for those just getting into all that is ‘ambient’ or a wonderful treat for those in the know at the end of this year. Oh, and I think I’ll be back [rather shortly] with yet another surprise!
