My first listen to Yann Tiersen's remix of The Anatomy of Clouds, was like being caught in a thunderstorm. He opened out the closed world of the original piano into an extraordinary rainburst of colour & sound. Not to be missed. Chapeau, mon ami.

"Plïnkï Plønkï is a 50 piece ensemble that doesn’t exist." So states the press release in the biography section about this anonymous project. But whether this release is backed by ten or twenty people it's clear that the vision behind the concept and its execution are delivered as one. Composing the music (and poems that accompany each piece) about our solitary natural satellite one cannot help but reflect upon this sound during its essential moment - the night. Somehow, the piano, inspired by the reveries of Éric Satie, slightly muted in the dense and cold forest, slightly sad on the rippling surface of a freezing lake, dances quietly among the slowly falling snow. Perhaps the instrument is not performing at this moment but is observing from afar. It is no coincidence that I have titled my favorite Best of the Year list "Music For Watching The Snow Slowly Fall In The Moonlight" and featured [mostly] piano music for its selection. Perhaps it is no coincidence that this mysterious musical artist feels the same about the moon. And if you're a fan of surrealist fiction, perchance it is no coincidence that the Japanese author Haruki Murakami brought the moon into the focus in his parallel universe of 1Q84. Or maybe it is all a coincidence, a happenstance, and a fluke, in a world where even the randomness seems to be predetermined. The way the snowflakes fall on the reflective surface of a freezing lake at night.

Following the warmly-received Paces (1631 Recordings/Decca Publishing) and the collaborative Stadsbilder (Time Released Sound), Swedish composer and multi-instrumentalist Jakob Lindhagen presents his second solo full-length album Memory Constructions on piano and coffee records.

Recorded together with German brother-duo Sebastian and Daniel Selke (aka CEEYS, whose collaborations also include Ólafur Arnalds and Spitfire) and longtime artistic collaborator Sofia Nystrand (Vargkvint), the album merges elements of neoclassical and ambient music, with a foundation of intimate piano works paired with violoncello and vocal synth, expanded with musical saw, kantele, bowed glockenspiel and sound experiments, recorded to analogue equipment. 

”Memories are an equally complicated as fascinating aspect of the human mind. After realizing a couple of memories from my childhood surroundings simply didn’t add up - the timeline didn’t make sense so I couldn’t have been in that place at that time, or a block of houses not being placed where they actually were - I became slightly obsessed with memory research. Our memories play such a huge part of our identities, yet they are extremely unreliable, change and fade over time, and are easily influenced and manipulated. And yet I couldn’t help myself also finding beauty in the fact that I both completely trust and distrust my own memories, that make up who I am. So digging from these slightly contradicting feelings, and from where my own memories are either constructed, fading, forgotten, rewritten, made up or completely true, this album was concieved.” 

Memory Constructions has been supported by the Swedish Arts Council, and is coming out digitally and on limited edition vinyl on the 23rd of September, featuring artwork by Sofia Nystrand and desing/layout by Celia Bayo.

“Sallaw” is a Kurdish word that expresses the passing of time, and on this new album the three sound artists have found a way of expressing that notion in music. A wonderfully immersive suite of five stunning new tracks, ‘Shifts’ expands upon Swedish-Iranian pianist / composer Shida Shahabi’s debut album and confirms her as a genuine new force in contemporary piano music.

Without radically departing from the ‘Homes’ blueprint, this time around her pallette is expanded, with the opening three tracks seeing the prominent addition of cello, intertwining with piano to provide a powerfully emotive sweep and drone. These parts were provided by Linnea Olsson, who Shida calls "an old musician friend of mine and without a doubt the best cellist I know in Sweden.”

Recorded by Shida and Elias Krantz, the record was mixed by Hampus Norén and mastered at Calyx by Francesco Donadello (Jóhann Jóhannsson, Modeselektor & Thom Yorke, A winged Victory for the Sullen, Dustin O'Halloran, Lubomyr Melnyk, Hauchka, etc).
