'Empyrean' is the third in a trilogy of albums on Dronarivm. Whereas Expanses might be evocative of vast landscapes and Harbor the feeling of floating on gentle waves, Empyrean seeks to transcend the Earthly realm altogether. The album differs slightly from the previous two in that piano plays a larger role in many of the tracks, bringing an ethereal modern classical feel to the Green Kingdom sound at times. Although the mood ranges from pensive to lighter pieces, the intent was to provide soundscapes that elevate one's midstate to the clouds above.

THE GREEN KINGDOM - With You

Sometimes it’s not enough to pick out the right chords, to write out the melody, sprinkle the notes. Sometimes it’s not enough to play the right instruments, hire the orchestra, space out the mics. Take a listen to some “fake Spotify artists” and you’ll know that it’s true. It seems that these copycats have all the ingredients, but the dish still tastes lukewarm. That is because their course is lacking the true soul of a master which they’ve poured into each piece. That’s the ingredient not listed on the recipe. Now take a listen to this gorgeous track by a composer and visual art collective from LA named Sanctuary. It seems, oh, so simple, straightforward, and plain, and yet, when you play it, it beams with emotion, dynamically charged and expanded within. It’s ripe with that ‘something’ that Jóhann possessed – and that is the best compliment I can give to any new recommendation. “Crystalline, emotional orchestral and choral elements blend with intriguing foley. Sometimes intimate, sometimes epic, Sanctuary caresses dark themes with intense visual vignettes and haunting, widescreen music, challenging the audience to join them on an inward journey.” Released on Safari Riot, the collective offers up a debut of two EPs, both volumes out tomorrow, December 3rd. This is incredibly beautiful and cinematic, and I can’t wait for you to enjoy the rest of the pieces. But for now, here’s my favorite, titled “In Absolute.”

"In my mind ‘In Absolute’ is a very visual piece. Much like a close-up shot in a film, slowly zooming out to reveal an intricate scene, ‘In Absolute’ embodies the same feeling. A simple idea ever-expanding. It would not have been possible without the brilliant string and woodwind ensembles we recorded in Iceland last summer."

I sometimes publish album reviews that somehow turn into special premieres. I also exclusively feature some tracks that somehow turn into album reviews. In either case, it’s irrelevant to bucket this into some special column and make it more about the music, which is the point behind this whole endeavour which I’ve been on for over fifteen years now (damn). So today I am happy to share with you a beautiful rework of a beautiful piece from two beautiful artists. What else do we need more to say? “For Now We See Darkly” is an original track by Frances Shelley, from her album, Songs Of Possibility which I have featured in my Best of 2021 list, Music For Being Together Alone. Exploring loss and its transformation into acceptance and even hope, the original is a muted modern classical piece, featuring Shelley on the piano with reverberated echoed treatments of industrial nature, combining the gentle with the rough for a spanning soundscape. For his rework, London-based composer Adrian Leung focused on the textural ambience of the piece, adding bass, arpeggiated synths, and glitchy elements for a cinematic arc that carries the piano melody into another territory, reimagined through the lens of Drexler and his sonic world. It’s a flattering account of the tale which started with the sounds of Frances Shelley and ended in the space of Drexler’s touch, and my only wish [as usual] is to hear this rework for a prolonged time.

There are only a few artists out there whose aesthetic resonates with my entire being. Jason van Wyk is one of them. And at this point, it almost seems that it doesn't matter which route he goes with his music - I will always be there, absorbing it all. Except, of course, that he manages to go down the same road that I've been on myself. These are richly textured cinematic atmospherics, with gently modulated open-air pads, moving bass, and elemental particles of rhythm and sound. Shuffling grains of lo-fi sonics ebb and flow like night-time waves. Everything appears to be perfectly held together, with just the right amount of reverb and space. And then the piano comes in. Maybe it's just a few notes, but it's enough to tell a story. And I am listening with awe. I've said this before and I'll say it again - perhaps the best compliment I can give to any musician is to say that I wish I'd make such music as them. And if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then let me imitate van Wyk's sound all day long. But all these words aside, here's a piece which I am honoured to premiere. It's called "Undoing" and it's just a glimpse into the Descendants, which I cannot wait to own on white 12". I hope that you agree.

Not Home may seem an unusual choice of single from Anne Garner’s upcoming album Lost Play but there’s precious little that is conventional about this singer-songwriter. Fans of her strange, seductive melancholy will be beguiled once again by the song’s signature union of disembodied sadness and reassuring intimacy. Warm waves of electric guitar and synthesiser cradle glitchy, restless percussives, the soaring silvered pedal steel of Jack Hayter (Hefner, Dollboy) and a lyrical message both beautiful and hard to hear.

DR-69 : PORYA HATAMI - Kani + Remixes (incl. Darren McClure, Purl, Arovane, Tomotsugu Nakamura, Sven Laux) 

Originally released in 2013 on the Inner Ocean label, Porya Hatami’s “Kani” was a four track EP showcasing his intimate take on modern ambient music. The Iranian artist has issued a large number of albums that imbue pastoral ambient with subtle field recordings and melodies. The melodic aspect of Hatami’s work took centre stage in this release, and shone bright across the four pieces.

So now, seven years later, “Kani” is being given the reissue that it deserves, and will delight those listeners new to it, and those who are rediscovering it again. Besides the original four tracks, there are an additional five remixes by artists working in a similar orbit to Hatami, and some who have collaborated directly with him in the past.

These reworks cover plenty of ground, reimagining the source material into new shapes. Some remixes extend the foggy soundscapes and conjure delicate melodic plucks. Others add mellow pulses that infer rhythm under the washes of sound, while others take these rhythmic ideas much further.
