Running Hot is producer and DJ Mark Newman. He discovered rave when he was 13 via a tape from his mate at school which has led to a lifelong love affair. He is is orignally from South Wales and now resides in Berlin running with the Love On The Rocks crew... This mix is based on his love of Italo-house. It's a nice one... Enjoy.

"I recorded this one in the middle of another frosty and grey morning in Berlin so I wanted to try and conjure up some of the spirit of summer. I’d had the idea for a while to try and do a mix with a lot of very pitched down Italo-house stuff so that it almost starts to sound a bit like kwaito and has a nice laid back feel… So here it is! Hope you enjoy!"

Q. What inspiration did you draw upon when planning this mix, and what kind of listening environments might you see it being easily enjoyed in?

A. Last year I went to my neighbour Lenny’s night at a tiny basement club in Hackney with Dan Beaumont and Wes Baggaley playing records together. Had not felt that feeling in the club since the early days going out in Naarm with locals playing records all night at Lounge, Liberty Social and Roxanne Parlour. This mix is a nod to that vibe and best suited to before, or after the club hangs…or triathlon training.

Q. Are there any records in the mix that are particularly close to your heart? 

A. There are quite a few records in here that I’ve had for more than 10 years and have only ever played to myself at personal kick-ons, so it’s a delight to share them more widely. The Usual Suspects remix of Mr. C and Robert Owens’ ‘A Thing Called Love’ is one. While I’ve never been a fan of Robert Owens’ vocal stylings, this remix is an overlooked $2 Layo & Bushwacka! banger. Will put it up on the Gazebo YouTube channel soon.

Q. You and Nick managed to gather a tonne of support for your inaugural Gazebo Records release last year, releasing Fuemana’s 1994 cult classic New Urban Polynesian on vinyl for the first time. What was your favourite part about that whole process?

A. The response to the Fuemana family’s story and musical talents from a whole new generation of fans really blew us away. Having Tony and Mamma Fuemana fly over from Auckland for the launch party was the perfect culmination of family, friends and community spirit around the release that was also the perfect send off for me moving to London the following day. News on Gazebo 002 incoming shortly…

Q. Where can people catch you spinning next?

A. All night at Frequence in Paris this Friday, Feb 21 at Bodega Nights, April 12 with Daisy Records and Evie at the Jago. Nick and I are putting on a Gazebo party over here on May 3 with some special guests that we are excited about!

Host of 'Das Lebendige Radio' (formerly on rtm.fm) he popped into our inbox with the following message and mix -

'About six months ago I picked up a green record at a small art and vintage gallery in Pimlico. On the back of the sleeve I read that it was the culmination of a two day workshop focused on the exploration of hip-hop. The twist: The workshop happened at ETAT, a community group for the elderly.

The gallery was full with locals celebrating the opening of its latest art exhibition. As I went up to pay, someone shouted: 'Thats my record!'. A bubbly lady, probably in her 70s walked up to me and took the record out of my hand to proclaim to everyone in the small room: 'This is my record! I'm a rapper!'

This mix is inspired by a chance encounter with a chance piece of art. The record is a loose collage of even looser interpretations of hip-hop. It was the perfect start, middle and end point to explore my own - very loose - interpretation of the genre.'

"Als Kind wollte ich unbedingt Schlagzeug spielen. Schön laut. 
Der Dorfschulmusikvorsteher war aber der Überzeugung man solle zuerst Flöte spielen und Noten lesen lernen. 

Dario, Malin und ich sorgten ein Jahr lang für viele enttäuschte Gesichter, pusteten uns da aber durch, nur um anschliessend mitgeteilt zu bekommen, dass wir uns jetzt erst Mal am „Böckli“ zu beweisen hätten. Das „Böckli" ist wohl so ziemlich die verkümmertste Reduktion eines Schlagzeugs, die sich der menschliche Verstand auszumalen vermag. Eigentlich bin ich ja ein grosser Freund der Begrenzung aufs Wesentliche, aber mit acht Jahren und dem sehnlichen Wunsch nach einem möglichst beeindruckenden Schlagzeug, kam mir dieser Teller auf drei abschraubbaren Beinen, doch mehr wie eine Erniedrigung und sehr viel weniger, wie lange Haare und Rock ’n' Roll, vor.
 
Was ich lange nicht begreifen konnte; weshalb dieses enttäuschende Ding zu allem Verdruss noch ungleich lange Beine haben sollte und schief vor mir dastand.
Mein Freund der Dorfschulmusikvorsteher war tief besorgt über die sinkende Zahl Tambouren, die die Schweizer Armee zu verzeichnen hatte, und wollte diese missliche Lage mit Hilfe des schiefen "Böcklis“, geradebiegen. Sprich, wer Schlagzeug spielen wollte, der hatte sich zuerst auf der Trommel zu beweisen. Kein Zufall also, dass das Böckli genau so schief dastand, wie die Trommel später getragen werden sollte. 
Entsprechend wurden auf diesem kümmerlichen Teller auch keine funky-drummer- oder ashleys-roachclip-breaks gespielt, sondern Märsche und Wirbel gepaukt. 
Das wurde mir irgendwann dann doch zu viel des Schiefen, und ich begrub die Idee mit dem Schlagzeug.
 
Einige Jahre später begann dann das fürsorgliche Einwirken meines Cousins und älteren Bruders Früchte zu tragen. Sie machten mir auf sehr überzeugende Weise und mit vielen Glück und Weite verströmenden Mixtapes begreiflich, dass ich es im Leben nie zu etwas Sinnvollem bringen würde, wenn ich nicht ein gediegenes Interesse an Musik entwickeln würde. Dabei waren sie auch sehr deutlich damit zu erklären, dass das mit diesen neuen CDs ja schon in Ordnung sei, aber Nichts, womit man sein mit Brot-und-Aufstrich eingespartes Mittagsgeld vergeuden sollte. 
Wie das ganze Mal sein sollte, hatte ich mir irgendwie schon ausgedacht bzw. vorgeschwärmt bekommen, aber die Suche nach dem Sound, der mich so richtig mitreissen würde, war auf dem Land doch recht orientierungslos. Es sollte sich nach einigen Umwegen zeigen, dass es weniger der Lars Ulrich aus den Kopfhörern meiner Mitschüler, als Zigaboo, Hans Heinrich Liebezeit und Klaus Dinger gewesen waren, die ich gesucht hatte. 
Als sich die Tür zum Hip-hop- und etwas später zur Clubmusikkultur auftat, wirkte das, was da auf mich zukam und mitriss, irgendwie selbstverständlich, aber dadurch nicht minder überwältigend.
 
Hip-hop war ein guter Einstieg. Anfangs zählte für mich zwar nur die Unterscheidung zwischen eben dieser und all der anderen Musik. Aber der Weg zu Clyde Stubblefield und nicht zuletzt zu all den anderen TR808-, MPC- und Linn-Sounds lag – den Samples sei Dank – bereits ausgebreitet vor mir. 
Und in der Folge schnell Mal die Einsicht, dass es für mich nicht um eine Einteilung in das eine andere Genre gehen sollte. Im Gegenteil. Überall gab es Musik zu entdecken. Wenn überhaupt unterschieden werden sollte, dann nur in gut und schlecht. (damit nicht gesagt, ich wisse was andere zum einen oder andern zählen wollen)
Die Idee der Drum-Machine-Mixes hat am Ende sehr wenig mit dem Dorfschulmusikvorsteher aber viel mit dieser Einsicht zu tun. ... und allenfalls mit dem Wunsch, dem Kreuz und Quer durch die Genres, einen roten Faden zu geben. Hier nun Folge 90 und 91.
