Do you ever watch the same movie more than once? It must be really good to revisit it, right? When it comes to releasing music, we’re guided by the same philosophy. That’s why we’ve had the mighty Estonian duo of HeadRead grace us with another EP. But this EP – entitled “Contra” – will be something quite special because while it’s going to be released in digital format, one of the tracks – “Jazz Force One” – will be available also as a limited-run lathe cut 12” pressed in a few limited copies! 

And as for the contents, the EP is yet another piece of evidence to prove how versatile producers these guys are. The opening track entitled “Bleep” deals a heavy blow with its rough-edged synthetic riffs, harsh drums, and a booming bassline. “Contra” leans a bit towards the 8-bit realm, keeping things classy and very old-school-game-like – but at the right BPM, of course. Moving on to “Jazz Force One”, we’re treated to some frantic drum programming and super-thick basslines, with some audible jazzy influences heard in the background throughout the track. The EP closes with “Starcrash” – a no-nonsense tune which is all about the right combination of broken drums, funky flavour, and a growling low end, sprinkled with a bit of synthetic additions here and there to add variety. This EP is a truly enjoyable cross-section of what HeadRead are capable of.

You may already know that apart from pushing the sound of already established names, Absys Records is always on the lookout for some fresh and exciting talent. And the release we’re proud to present to you today is a perfect example of practicing wha t we preach. 'Proximo' is an EP by HeadRead – a duo of newcomer producers from Estonia, Tallinn. They are Mikk Saar (aka Planeet) and Roland Kaur (aka Slammin), and have been making waves for some time now, having released their debut EP on Thing’s - Depthwise Music. Their roots in drum & bass date back to the end of the 90s – with a focus on the more dancefloor side of the era, so you can more or less imagine what to expect of their output.

What they deliver today via Absys Records is a strong statement of what their vision of drum & bass is about – energy, force, precision, and – obviously – passion. Indeed, the four-track 'Proximo' will take you on a journey through the more upbeat and action-packed shades of drum & bass, offering you a rolling ride with the dancefloor-oriented 'Chopper' (the name says it all), a hyper-speed drive in the accompaniment of a growling stepper entitled 'Gravity', a half-stepping treat in the form of the heavy-hitting 'Proximo', and a ruthless assault named 'The Unknown', slamming you with an array of breakneck-paced beats and a thundering bassline. All in all, the Ep is excellent aural substitute for an energy drink, so get ready to be stimulated in a flash.

The final release of the first KosMos Gets Harder album is an EP consisting of five blockbuster tracks. The general sound of the album is based on a more dynamic d’n’b with elements of neurofunk, tech step, trap and dubstep preserving the common vision of the label. The release is opened by Electrosoul System’s ‘Insects’, then follow the label’s debutants HeadRead with a jungle track “Circulation”, Storm Crew with ‘Step Off’ – kind of a hymn of Russian jungle of the 90s remixed by Green Vibes, Distant Future goes on with neuro deep ‘Katharsys’, the release is wrapped up by Kos.Mos.Music Collective this time consisting of Tire, Liquitek and Electrosoul System with techstep/hardcore track 'Se Listo'.

Dzheimz & Ninja 'Karjala / Varta' Remixes

December 2016 has brought us remixes of two true Estonian drum & bass classics originally written by Dzheimz & Ninja, both released as part of their album 'Newdancebeat' sixteen years ago in 2000. 

When 'Karjala' came out back in the day it created substantial waves in the Estonian underground scene and has since become a true d&b classic in the Estonian scene. It is only fitting that now, in 2016, one of the more interesting current Estonian drum&bass outfits - HeadRead, with Planeet and Slammin behind this duo - were asked to remix this beauty. A daunting task indeed, but the boys did not flinch. They went and produced a beast of a remix that not only stays true to the original tune's ethos, but also revamps it to current drum & bass standards, both sonically and creatively. What's truly interesting is that both the 'Karjala' original and the remix - Karjala is also the name of a barren and icy region that lies between Finland and Russia - precisely encapsulate this landscape - the cold, ominous stabs motifs and pulsating midrange synths vibe throughout the tune in perfect harmony with the weighty sub-bass and crisp drum engineering - this is polar night rave magic! 

The flipside takes a different approach from the icy soundscapes of 'Karjala', with Planeet (one half of HeadRead) channeling late 90's and early 00's Ed Rush & Optical influenced techstep to create a monster remix of 'Varta'. The track opens up with a build-up combination of drum percussion and electronic effects, creating a cinematic sci-fi atmosphere - picture a spaceship crash-landing on a hostile alien planet. This leads up to the drop which takes off in a spectacular manner - the bassline carries the track forward with pure energy and the meticulously produced drums provide a solid backbone to create the texture for the dancefloor banger it is. Again, the track's name 'Varta' (if you don't know, look it up!) perfectly encompasses the music - the midrange and atmo pad build-ups that are rising throughout the track, created through brilliant sound design elements, scream 'release, restart, recharge'!
