Dipped Chocolate – Doubly 99 EP

Another master-cut from label founder and co-owner Craig De Sousa. This time teaming up with Erefaan Pearce. This EP spans three years between tunes and has a story as interesting as the music it contains. Side A ‘Resolution’ was produced in 2004 after the sudden and shocking death of one of Cape Town’s deep house aficionados, affectionately known as Sean ‘the prawn’ Bauer. Craig’s friendship in and out of the DJ box with a young DJ many considered to be a protégé shines through beautifully in this suitable homage to a fallen son. It sounds like the kind of tune we here in SA would expect the Prawn to play in the middle of one of his legendary sets of deep funky madness. The lyrics “I just needed to change my life” sits as a constant reminder of the perilous nature of our industry. Side B ‘Devotion’ produced three years later still shows signs of the melancholy we experience when losing those closest to us, but is not to be treated lightly. A hard-edged tech monster that could do any house dance floor justice after midnight, the theme is consistent, and you can hear it in the clean cut synth patterns and smooth production of this massive B side record.

Erefaan Pearce – Sensuality EP

The first release in the catalogue from regular contributor and SA house music stalwart Erefaan Pearce, in the Sensuality EP we have a classic example of music that was produced way ahead of its time. Side A gives us the Analogue Mix of ‘Disco Biscuits’, a term Erefaan found humorous and understandable at the time of naming. Being one step ahead of his counterparts in the industry Erefaan had a box full of what would years later be termed ‘new disco’ and was a pioneer of this sound on South African shores hugely popularized by the likes of Metro Area and Tiga. This 2002 synth disco cut lends a strong ear to the sounds of these influences and would still sound modern in a set a decade later. Side B and ‘I Just Wanna Love You’ gives us a slightly deeper, slightly nastier variant on the same sound, this time with our producer introducing us to his multi-band vocal abilities.

The first EP in the catalogue to give us a various artist’s variety. Side A and On the Ball Trio give us the first H&T collaboration between label staples and South African house music legends Craig De Sousa and Erefaan Pearce. With ‘What You Could Not Do’ we have an insatiable funk track that has been destroying South African dance floors since its completion in 2006. With a head full of 90’s house sounds the duo perform and execute the perfect new/old house sound that sweeps the house world in this day in age, almost 6 years later. A special mention goes out to Analogue Ears for his contribution to the production. Side B and Double Dipped are a combined effort from Craig De Sousa and younger brother Grant. ‘Jungle Talk’ is named after the many hidden animal and wildlife samples that sit under the vocoded and relentlessly catchy hook/lead. Originally produced as an exclusive for Grant’s ‘Deeper Sounds of…’ mix compilation, it now gets a well-deserved label release four years after completion.

Label owner Roger’s second solo EP on the label, this two-sided record marks the coming of age of one of South Africa’s most inspired house music talents. Side A is ‘Feel This’, a track as unique in its interpretation of house as the city in which it was born. A multi-layered tech outing that has had SA’s dance floors up in arms, it is truly a feeling of the time and space from whence it came. Produced in an evening it sits as an obvious choice for the H&T catalogue thanks to its funk-fueled analogue synth style. Side B’s ‘Phunktechnique’ is a true B-side tune, inconspicuously catchy and ready for airtime with any DJ who takes the time to explore their record collection to the fullest. Despite its flip-side appeal, it is a true taste in talent, the kind of record that has obviously been produced by a man who knows his way around a DJ box. Featured on the Goodhope FM DJ compilation ‘The Night Watchmen’ in 2006.

As the decade drew to a close in the northern reaches of South Africa, label owner Roger tries to encapsulate the atmosphere of the dance floors of the time. Side A ‘Right Here Right Now’ couldn’t describe it better. Live bass, cheeky synth licks and a moreish vocal hook all combine to make a picture-portrait of where the real heads were at. By the time the synthesized bass joins the rest of the cacophony of well-produced sounds any DJ would be best to sit back and watch as the near silent breakdown builds to a point that would leave all but the most uneducated floors in tatters. Side B’s ‘Derelique’ also pays homage to where the scene was headed, this time looking ahead as opposed to behind for inspiration. A real outing on tech house, this little gem could find a place in the most acid-fueled sets of our time, but sit quite comfortably in the middle of the funkiest slots in clubs around the globe.

Iridium Project – Chase the Stars EP

Once again the entire Iridium crew pull together to pull off one of their most successful tunes in the live arena. Side A’s ‘Love Me’ was originally intended as a radio edit, its catchy and infectious bass line was reworked and re-edited for extended play during club sets for both the DJ’s as individuals in the band. The original version was taken back into the studio and reworked to better suit its belonging more on the club floor. A true ‘go-to’ tune of the Iridium live set, it was always going to be reworked to suit the bags of DJ’s the world over. Side B and ‘Incognito’ registered as one of the outfit’s most successful overseas hits, especially in Russia where the Nick Matthews beast of a bass lines destroyed dance floors from Khabarovsk to the backwaters of wintry Russia. Again, the depth of the sound is largely thanks to the use of analogue synthesizers for leads and in this case the true grit of the bass line.

Various Artists – What What EP

In South African terms this is a coming together of three of the biggest and longest standing names on the house music scene. Three DJ’s who were there at the beginning of the deep house movement come together to give us a truly versatile EP. Side A’s ‘30 Something’ by Erefaan Pearce is so named for to very obvious reasons; he is about to turn thirty at the time of production, and has cut many of the samples from a thirty year old vinyl cut from his collection. A synth heavy bully of a tune, it also marks Erefaan’s first foray into long, string like synth pads. Side B is the production debut of old friend and long time collaborator Ryan ‘the dentist’ Dent with Craig De Sousa. ‘Sous Man’, originally completed in 2006 this is again the product of two veterans of the scene tipping their hats to the likes of Depeche Mode. Produced with an Access Virus A synth on lead, a steel string guitar on the licks and the pentatonic scale front of mind, this is a welcome calling card to all those born before 1985.

There’s no hidden meaning here… Side A and ‘1997’ is a very strong indicator of where the man’s mind was when he made this. Considered by most to be the heyday of the SA rave scene, 1997 as a year saw some of the most dramatic changes in the house music landscape with the introduction of hollow, raw and bouncy bass that become known as speed garage. Here Roger pays homage to that sound with a strictly 90’s vocal hook, speed garage bass and yet the cleanliness of production that comes with being produced ten years later. Side B and ‘Good Times’ remains true to the old school flavour and has been damaging dance floors since 2005, a straight-up banger this one doesn’t pretend to belong anywhere but in the middle of the club, in the middle of the night, in the middle of the set. D’Lux’s most successful release on the catalogue pre Heads & Tails.

Iridium Project – Show My Love

Once again with no permanent front man, the band experiment further with vocal collaboration, this time pulling a male vocalist into the fray for the first time. Apart from having Craig De Sousa, Nick Matthews and Riccardo Moretti  on production detail, the outfit are joined by some of South Africa’s favourite musical sons; RJ Benjamin on vocals, Dan Shout on saxophone  and Maurice ‘the passion’ Paliaga on bass. Performed live on the notoriously critical North Sea Jazz Festival stage, the success of ‘Show My Love’ was the beginning of live electronic jazz outfit ‘Magic Carpet Ride’, soon to released on Heads & Tails Music.

Remarkably this is the first solo effort in the Heads and Tails catalogue from co-owner Craig De Sousa. This EP is the first of three being released over the Southern Summer and is included in Craig’s Audio Flux 2012 mix which charted #2 on Beatports Top 100 mixes. Side A kicks off with “Reckless.” This infectious South African House track has that “X factor” which most producers strive for but never achieve. Side B’s “Deluxe Shuffle” is a tribute track to one of South Africa’s corner stone Deep House clubs Deluxe, where Craig played many dj sets over 10 years to a discerning audience. The clubs unfortunate closing this year inspired Craig to produce “Deluxe Shuffle,” which Craig describes as “the common groove that always moved the dance floor.” The Reckless Shuffle EP is a passionate introduction to one of South Africa’s guardians of House Music.

Heads & Tails

     By far one of the most established deep/nu-disco house labels in South Africa, H&T has quietly crept up to its tenth birthday, having been begun in Cape Town in 2002 by two staples of the SA DJ scene, Craig De Sousa and Erefaan Pearce. Many seasons of featuring on countless local DJ mixes and compilations have resulted in the impressive back-catalogue that now makes up the H&T treasure chest. With the first release dating back to 2001, it is a label that that has had to wait patiently for it’s coming out party due to the forward thinking of the artists it features. But now in 2012, the H&T archives are set for release, sleeves and all.
     The artist line-up is an impressive array of South African stalwarts of house music, and the music featured has been tearing SA’s dance floors and airwaves apart for a decade. With usage licenses being handed over for mix series and compilations in droves (15 in 8 years), its no wonder the entire batch is ready for digital distribution as single’s and EP’s for international consumption. The label features contributions from nearly 20 South African artists, and is only just teething.
     Now that owner and co-founder Craig de Sousa has teamed up with partner Roger D’Lux, the label is finally ready for international distribution. A back catalogue of 20 well thought and out and designed releases are ready for the digital shelves as of mid-2012. With a plethora of new material in the pipeline, H&T is set to become a major contender for South African space in the digital music market.
