In early 2017 I recorded this mix trying to make it a follow up to the joy of cooking series. after listening a couple of times I feltlike it could be shorter - and forgot about it. It just appeared when I tried to make room on my external hard disk ... The last two hours were quite entertaining so I share these with you...

Jacques Charlier is primarily known as a visual artist, which obscures the fact that he’s been actively multi-disciplinary for the entirety of his career. Born in 1939 in Liège, Belgium, his interest in all forms of art began at a very early age when he aspired to be a poet, writer, musician, comic book artist, actor, and movie director, and in his own eccentric way became all of these things.

In the 1970s, inspired by the minimalist sounds of Philip Glass, Steve Reich, La Monte Young, John Cage, and Meredith Monk, Charlier armed himself with a custom guitar, and sound modulating effects and started experimenting on his 4-track. He performed psychoacoustic pieces in Liège, Antwerp, Eindhoven, Rotterdam, Milan and Düsseldorf, and in the inimitable performance art video “Desperados Music”, filmed by Paul Paquay in 1979 for Belgian television. Charlier hit a creative stride in the 1980s, recording off-kilter tunes influenced by everything from post-punk, EBM, Yé-yé and psychedelic rock. Similarities reside in the catalogs of Belgian labels Crammed Discs and Les Disques Du Crépuscule, yet even with these genre-bending precedents, Charlier’s music is idiosyncratic to the extreme. In 1984 and 1987, he self-released two cassettes incorporating synth, drum machine, his custom guitar, and vocalist Martine Doutreleau on occasional duets.

This limited edition 7” single offers the previously unreleased jangle/darkwave jam “Kiliwatch”, backed with “Loulou”, a scorching psychedelic oddity from one of Charlier’s original cassettes. It precedes the upcoming double LP compilation of Charlier’s music, and is the perfect introduction to his curious and complex artistic vision.

Alobhe
Alobhe (aka Iris Bauer) is a musician residing in Berlin, hell-bent on gutturally stabbing each broken genre she comes across. Raised in Hamburg but now based in Berlin, Bauer’s visceral take on future club music combines elements of electro, black metal, dark ambient, and techno to produce foreboding sonic assaults with an underlying impulse towards the industrial dancefloor.

MAAY
MAAY is an Argentinian DJ/Producer from Buenos Aires. 
Her sets include a hybrid and deconstructed style between dark atmospheres, latin rhythms and emotional trance melodies.  
She started djing in TRRUENO venues and hosting different rave parties. This year she joined Catnapp (Monkeytown) as her official dj and she was part of TRRUENO's European tour performing in Prague, Brno, Poland, Paris and Berlin.

Jovendelaperla
Perla (JOVENDELAPERLA) is the result of a Sarcoma de Ewing and the subsequent surgical intervention in which one of her rib is replaced by a titanium replica made using a 3D printer.

Perla’s work is fully influenced by her life background and takes form through several languages such as performance, poetry or sound. As a DJ, JOVENDELAPERLA offers dynamic DJ sets inspired by deconstructed sounds, gabber beats, club music, melancholic melodies or even her own poems. She is the co-founder of the Madrid-based queer party collective CULPA and is currently working in her new EP with the uruguyan producer Lechuga Zafiro.

Laura Not
Laura Not is an artist, sound-collagist and web radio host. She is responsible for two monthly radio shows since 2017: (x)=musik on Lyl Radio and Sounds Unsaid on Dublab.de. In 2019, she started curating "Are You Listening?", a series of experimental music concerts at Arkaoda Berlin.
Like in a collage made of unusually combined materials, her dj sets are the space in which sounds link together beyond the different stories they tell.

The man behind Kashual Plastik is a protagonist of Neuköln's vibrant scene, an influential disc jockey and selector, also thank to the cult radio show "Plastik Universe" he hosts on Cashmere Radio. With his own label Kashual Plastik, he has been experimenting an authentic DIY approach made of intriguing graphic aesthetics and an "hard-to-pigeon-hole" sound which takes inspiration from 80ties Synth-wave, EBM as much as from Ambient electronics.

Diane Barbé is a sound artist and recordist based in Berlin. She researches the way we relate to our acoustic environments, using sound as a gentle medium to understand, represent and expand perception. In her live sets she mixes concrete sounds, acoustic instruments and minimalistic synthesis to achieve journeys much akin to lucid dreaming. For two years, she co-hosted the feminist radio show Hystereo on Berlin Community Radio, and has been producing acoustic ecology podcasts on Radio Nunc. Diane has released tapes with Jungle Gym (USA); her ambient music is featured on the 2019 Nachtdigital Mint compilation (Germany) or On Board Music imprint (2020) and she is cooking up some tunes for XYZ records (Czech Republic). She is currently training as a field recordist for documentaries and studying music at the UdK Berlin.
