الفناء في الله
Annihilation in Allah

يَا طَالِبَ الْفَنَا فِي اللَّهْ قُلْ دَائِمًا اَللَّهْ اَللَّهْ
Oh, seeker of annihilation in Allah – say all the time: ‘Allah – Allah’

وَغِبْ فِيهِ عَنْ سَوَاهُ وَاشْهَدْ بِقَلْبِكَ اَللَّهْ
And withdraw into Him from other-than-Him and with your heart – see Allah

وَاجْمَعْ هُمُومَكَ فِيهِ تُكْفَى بِهِ عَنْ غَيْرِ اللَّهْ
Gather your concerns in Him and He will be enough in place of other-than-Allah

وَكُنْ عَْبدًا صِرْفًا لَهُ تَكُنْ حُرًّا عَنْ غَيْرِ اللَّهْ
Be a pure slave to Him and you will be free from other-than-Allah

وَاخْضَعْ لَهُ وَتَذَلَّلْ تَفُزْ بِسِرٍّ مِنَ اللَّهْ
Submit yourself to Him and be humble and you will win a secret from Allah

وَاذْكُرْ بِجِدٍّ وَصِدْقٍ بَيْنَ يَدَيْ عَبِيْدِ اللَّهْ
Invoke Him with gravity and sincerity in the presence of the slaves of Allah

وَاكْتُمْ إِذَا تَجَلَّى لَكْ بِأَنْوَارٍ مِنْ ذَاتِ اللَّهْ
Conceal it when He is manifested to you with lights from the essence of Allah

فَالْغَيْرُ عِنْدَنَا مُحَالْ فَالْوُجُودُ الْحَقُّ لِلَّهْ
With us, other is impossible, for existence belongs to Allah

وَوَهْمَكْ اِقْطَعْ دَائِمًا بِتَوْحِيْدٍ صِرْفٍ لِلَّهْ
Constantly cut through your illusion with a pure tawhid to Allah

فَوَحْدَةُ الْفِعْلِ تَبْدُو فِي أَوَّلِ الذِّكْرِ لِلَّهْ
So, the oneness of action appears at the beginning of dhikr of Allah

وَوَحْدَةُ الْوَصْفِ لَهُ تَأْتِيْ مِنَ الْحُبِّ فِي اللَّهْ
And the oneness of attribute comes from love of Allah

وَوَحْدَةُ الذَّاتِ لَهُ تُوَرِّثُ الْبَقَا بِاللَّهْ
And the oneness of His essence gives going-on with Allah

فَهَنِيْئًا لِمَنْ مَشَى فِي طَرِيْقِ الذِّكْرِ لِلَّهْ
Joy to the one who walks on the path of dhikr of Allah

مُعْتَقِدًا شَيْخًا حَيًّا يَكُونُ عَارِفًا بِاللَّهْ
Believing in a living Shaykh who is a gnostic of Allah

وَلَازَمَ الْحُبَّ لَهُ وَبَاعَ نَفْسَهُ لِلَّهْ
He holds constantly to his love and sells his self to Allah

وَقَامَ فِي اللَّيْلِ يَتْلُو كَلَامَهُ شَوْقًا لِلَّهْ
He rises in the night to recite his word, longing for Allah

فَنَالَ مَا يَطْلُبُهُ مِنْ قُوَّةِ الْعِلْمِ بِاللَّهْ
And so, gets what he seeks of the power of knowledge in Allah

وَفَيْضُنَا مِنْ نَبِيٍّ سَيِّدُ مَخْلُوقَاتِ اللَّهْ
Our gifts are from a Prophet who is the master of the creatures of Allah

عَلَيْهِ أَزْكَى صَلَاةٍ عَدَدَ مَعْلُومَاتِ اللَّهْ
May the purest of blessings be upon him in quantity as great as the knowledge of Allah

وَآلِهِ وَصَحْبِهِ وَكُلِّ دَاعٍ إِلَى اللَّهْ

Audible Alchemy: The Gasoline Puddles Sketches

As most of you know I am working on my new studio album Majnun's Lost Memoirs. In the meantime I wanted to share some of the songs I have written and recorded in the past few years that never made it onto my studio albums. These songs are essentially Sketches in my Audible Rhymebook. Some were recorded on the road or by myself in my home studio. These songs are a glimpse behind the scenes into my creative process. They are some of my favorite pieces and I wanted to share them with my Fambase. One Love to each and every.

About the song:

Tear Drops

The summer before I entered High School my childhood best friend died in a car crash. That was the first close experience I had with death and the fleeting nature of life. I became obsessed with knowing the answers to the greater questions about the purpose of life and the nature of the afterlife. I delved into books of the different religious traditions and philosophies in human history to see what they said about the afterlife. A few years later when we were finishing up our first studio album, my close friend and band mate took his own life on the anniversary of his father’s (unresolved) murder by a police officer. Again I was brought to death's door. Around that time I was rushed away in an ambulance after a drunk driver, attempting to race the car I was in, lost control and smashed into us, knocking us into the barricade on the freeway. In that expanded moment between when his car hit us and when we hit the barricade all I heard was a voice in my head saying, “This is it." When I came to I was filled with tubes and drugs. They feared I had internal bleeding and spinal damage but miraculously after the whiplash wore off my bruises and bumps were only skin deep.

Sometime later I had a life changing experience on psilocybin, in which I was convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that I was dying and passing forever from this life. I went through the psychological preparation for the transition, and after the deeply humbling and horrifying experience of reflecting on the details of my life and the beauty and ugliness that my soul had given birth to in this realm, I emerged completely transformed. I didn’t speak for weeks. And it took years for the effects of that experience to really set in. My closest friends said I was never the same again.

In addition to those life experiences, this song was inspired by my recent research in psychedelics (specifically DMT), the growing literature on Near Death Experience, the reports of nirvana, moksha, fana, oneness, and the afterlife by the prophets and saints of the worlds religious traditions, and the Allegory of the Cave that Plato so eloquently used to explain the goal of the philosophers quest. These sources unanimously agree that the transcendent nature of death (and the mystical experience) are characterized by a feeling of union with the Source of all things in a type of oneness that is so pleasurable and perfect that it surpasses the realm of words or any other form of expression that humans are capable of. The Prophet Muhammad said, "Die before you die." He is also reported to have said, "Man is dreaming and when he dies he wakes up." Thus, death is the waking from the dream and this awakening is possible for all before the physical death. All religious traditions (and pre-modern philosophical systems) are models of preparation for the great transition that is death, and their esoteric or mystical inner kernels are models of preparation for the death before death, the spiritual awakening.

In the song “Tear Drops,” I touch on all these concepts by telling the story of a specific allegorical individual. The verses are each one third of a monologue, set as a conversation the subject is having with himself about how to process his experience. As in Plato's Cave Allegory he is also struggling with how to share this experience with his people. He knows how ridiculously insane it all sounds in light of conventionally accepted paradigms about the nature of reality. Were not most prophets, saints, and sages rejected, deemed insane, and heretical and ultimately killed or persecuted by their people for attempting to share their visions of reality?

Moonlit Madness

In this chapter of the Lost Memoirs, Majnun confesses that an all-consuming love has rendered rational thought mute and torn him into a world in which the beloved is all. Although unable to reunite with the beloved, the universe has become an expanse of innumerable mirrors, which at every moment reflect her face from new angles. Woven together indistinguishably are the ecstasy of contemplating the beloved and the pain of separation from her lips. The tension of love builds until ultimately the lover finds his own self-awareness to be but a veil.
