“Fifth and Spring”

For Sessions 12, I tapped one of LA’s finest selectors, kindred spirit Luke Mele.
~
Luke delivers a 2.5+ hour marathon — a morning-time sipper that eases into an afternoon dance delight. It’s a lush journey through summertime spiritual jazz, fusion, soul, and disco, all pulled from crates at the iconic Last Bookstore in downtown LA.
~
Over the years, Luke has spent time digging at the shop, which he says holds a very special meaning to him. Hence the name of the mix: “Fifth and Spring.”

We're none too fond of terms like 'selector' here at the figurative 12th Isle HQ. We think it was a shrewd marketing ploy concocted by natural wine bar owners - and possibly the freemasons - who repackaged the spergy single-mindedness of record nerds into something that sounded much more socially agile and cool in order to distract punters from the exorbitant price of nibbles. Thankfully, the time of white label soundtracked £40 sashimi seems to be behind us, and DJing can go back to being obsessives playing odd music made by even odder folk without much in the way of pretence. Someone who encapsulates that kind of energy has very kindly put together a nearly 4 hour long sprawl and has stated that under no circumstances should this mix be enjoyed alongside thinly sliced bits of raw beef and wine with bits in it or there will be hell to pay. Focus on B Side dubs from the mid/late 80s where producers were given free rein to deconstruct and and reimagine. vocals coming in and out of the void, basslines stripped bare, drums echoing into infinity

The day opens like a checkpoint: a gate that counts, not forbids.
We fumble our courage, hear it tick across the floor, and call that clatter progress.
Mistakes flicker—little glitches—but they illuminate the path more honestly than triumph.

A voice inside writes to us in the margin: try again.
Not a command—an invitation.
We learn the craft of continuing: farming quiet hope, carrying calm like a lantern.
To be “low HP” is only to feel the heart nearer; to be mapless is only to trust the breath.

And when the frame goes grey, we are not erased.
We return—smaller, truer—respawned at the edge of ourselves.
What owns us is what we refuse to name defeat.
Another coin. Another scene.
We stand, almost laughing, and press start again.
