Cover of Kylie Minogue's Love at First Sight from Melbourne's @takeyrtime - the first taste of Vol. 1, an upcoming compilation from Healthy Tapes with all funds going to RISE (riserefugee.org).

Take Your Time is Angela Schilling (Swimming, @isoliverwhite) and Lee Hannah (The Townhouses, @sessility) - together hanging out, drinking coffee and making their own brand of diva house ready for the kind of club that serves cappuccinos. The single is their first release since their debut 7” through @japanesewallpaper ’s boutique label, @neat-lawn.

Love at First Sight is a jazz-hued disco interpretation of a pop star the duo grew up listening to, as Angela explains;

“Kylie represents some of my most formative years throughout high school, learning about myself and forming a connection to dance music especially. She represented an optimist to a pretty naive and confused teenage me and it's powerful to relive it again as a cynical adult in need of optimism.”

Vol. 1 will be released digitally and on limited turquoise cassette through Healthy Tapes on June 30th. The compilation also features Allume, Stella Donnelly, Yeo, Culte, Bahasa Malay and many more.

A lo-fi and intimate track from @culte666 reflecting on a winter that never seems to end. The single is the third and final taste from Vol. 1,  a compilation from Healthy Tapes in support of RISE (Refugees, Survivors and Ex-detainees).

The last six months have been incredibly busy for Yura supporting the likes of Yumi Zouma and Jarrow around Melbourne and releasing a collaborative EP with Rhysics.

It’s Too Cold To Be Spring continues a on tradition of loose and instantaneous recordings from Culte, with few distractions and a sound that’s likely to appeal to fans of Foxes in Fiction and Frankie Cosmos. Yura explains that;

“It's Too Cold to Be Spring is about October in 2016. It was a pretty intense & sad month - living off $3 every week and drinking mystery beers at the Tote. The spring time was only bearable thanks to my lovely friends which this song is dedicated to”

Melbourne artist Lee Hannah releases their visual album, Infinitely - a stunningly slow-moving 20 minute short film / album depicting the intricate natural and unnatural ecology of Australia’s mallee district. Filmed on an iPhone over one week in winter while camping on Latje Latje, Kureinji, Barkindji and Wergaia land (Northern Victoria & South Australia), Lee visually composes landscapes in constant transformation in a region of the country that’s often known for being harsh and unforgiving.

The soundtrack to the film carries influence from experimentalists such as the Necks and the Dirty Three, tastefully depicting the dry yet unpredictable nature of the landscape with a minimal approach of one or two instruments improvising over a drone.

“After a few days straight of setting up your phone to record for extended periods of time trying your best to remain silent, you very quickly realise that the mallee never really stays still. It’s comforting - to know what looks dry, barren and lifeless from a distance, is undeniably alive and exciting on a micro scale.”

The visual record marks a drastic change in direction for Lee, who previously released three albums and toured around Australia and Europe under the name The Townhouses, as well as more recently working as one half of house-duo Take Your Time.

Infinitely will be released digitally and on limited cassette through Healthy Tapes on February 23rd.

Tanaya Harper - Graceless

Adelaide-based artist Allume releases Valentine / The Sound of Rain Starting - a touchingly intimate double single of bedroom pop. Simplistic yet nuanced, both singles patiently explore an intersection between live instrumentation and electronic sampling led by Allume’s captivating voice.

Since uploading demos on soundcloud in 2013, Allume (Elena Nees) has consistently captured attention with her sense of space and honesty in her songwriting. Since releasing her debut EP Why Move Very Fast At All, she’s been seen recently supporting Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Ball Park Music, as well as collaborating/touring around remote Australia with David Blumberg & the Maraby Band.

Valentine showcases this new found love of collaboration (on this occasion with local-jazz musician Lewis But-Husaim), whilst The Sound of Rain Starting is a stunningly gripping a capella piece sure to appeal to fans of Julianna Barwick. The two tracks are lifted from her upcoming EP, Valentine.

Valentine and The Sound of Rain Starting will be released this Valentines Day. The EP will be released digitally and on limited red-cassette through Healthy Tapes on February 28th.

Sydney/Copenhagen/NY-based artist Kythira releases Change My Mind - an authentically honest taste of jangly pop from her upcoming tape Cut Through.

Kythira is the project of nomadic musician Alyssa Gengos, named after the Greek island of the same name (Κύθηρα). Change My Mind is a perfect representation of the record - addictive guitar pop that’s straight to the point with little more than a drum machine and cheap casiotone to accompany Alyssa’s incredibly catchy vocal hooks.

Self-produced on her laptop while moving around between Sydney, LA and Copenhagen, Cut Through follows up her synth-driven EP Soon, I Promise released back in January 2018. The tape is a stunning bedroom pop release, sure to appeal to fans of Fazerdaze or Best Coast.

Change My Mind is out April 10th. It is taken from Kythira’s debut tape Cut Through, released by Healthy Tapes digitally and on limited cassette on May 30th.

Manila-based artist Pamcy releases her highly-anticipated debut LP BINIBINI, a stunningly addictive and transformative collection of 8 DIY-House tracks.

BINIBINI (a honorific term for women in Filipino not commonly used today) is Pamcy’s second release through Healthy Tapes and features the singles Beauty Parlor and Sinigang na Hipon. In making the record, Pamcy picked everyday experiences, concepts, and objects that have somehow shaped her identity, and on a larger scale, are cultural artefacts of femininity. From these, she reimagined all the resulting colours, flavours, experiences and textures and turned them into music.

Since releasing her debut release Piso Isa last year, Pamcy has used her platform to empower other female and non-binary musicians in the Philippines, encouraging more diverse lineups and recently appearing on the cover of broadsheet Young Star in a feature on making the local music scene a safe space. She has also contributed to compilations from Z Tapes and Tropical Diskoral, was playlisted by FBi Radio and her cassette was included in Indie Manila’s Top 10 Albums/EPs of 2018.

Pamcy’s debut LP BINIBINI will be out via Healthy Tapes digitally and on limited cassette on July 30th.

Pamcy - Sinigang Na Hipon

Brisbane-based duo Amaringo release their debut album, I Woke Up This Morning After a Dream, out via Melbourne label Healthy Tapes (Stella Donnelly, Rainbow Chan, Dianas). 

The project of drummer/vocalist Allie Wu Lin and guitarist/bassist Christian Driscoll, Amaringo create expansive and woozy atmospheres with tinges of psych that never stray too far away from their ambitious and beautiful songwriting. 

Fragmented between writing and recording half of the album in a recording studio, then a year later completing the rest in a more improvised fashion, the resulting record is a startlingly consistent and accomplished piece of work. From the acoustic strums of the 70’s-inspired I Woke Up, to the major-minor drones of Saguaro, and the 7-and-a-half minute monumental Her Way, the album has no shortage of timeless moments sure to appeal to fans of La Luz and Sharon Van Etten.

The project showcases a love for summer-tinged lo-fi pop production, and is sure to appeal to fans of Men I Trust or Washed Out. 

The single follows Market’s debut EP released mid-2019 featuring the singles Circles and Everytime (feat. Tanaya Harper). The release was featured on Spotify’s Lo-Fi Indie and Low-key Weekend editorial playlists and best described by Bandcamp as “low-lit and soothing, soft vocals swaddled in tender guitar lines” on their New and Notable series.

Melbourne/Adelaide-based artist Lauren Abineri releases her debut album Everything That I’ve Stolen. 

FKA water bear, Lauren’s projects have often been experimental and electronic in nature, with a brand of sample-laden minimal techno and darkwave electronica that have seen her support the likes of My Disco, Molly Nilsson and recently closing out the Unsound Adelaide festival. Her music under her own name however takes a very different route, exploring a quieter drone-folk side that she even goes as far to self-term ‘emo-folk’: 

“Everything That I’ve Stolen is a collection of songs that I lovingly describe as being of the genre ‘emo-folk’ - a genre that is most definitely real and not made up. I think emo-folk is self-preservation and self-deprecation, sitting somewhere between domestic places and dream spaces, between emotional fullness and having no feelings at all. Between very specific stories and ones that are completely fabricated.” 

Recorded with Nick Huggins in Point Lonsdale over a cold few autumn days in 2018, the record features vocal collaborations with Georgia Harvey (Yffer) and Market, and was delicately mastered by fellow Adelaide artist Sione Teumohenga (Lonelyspeck).
