Jackson x Natural Selection omnibus special! 

Yep, myself and my right-hand man Owen Tozer are on our first podcast trip of the Covid era. We’ve been in Jackson Hole for the first stop of the Natural Selection Tour, and have taken the opportunity to record as many episodes as we could with people involved in the event, from Jackson, or from the wider snowboarding community. 

Continuing with this conversation with judge Sandy Macdonald. One of the things I’ve been trying to do while out here is to throw some some light onto some of the more opaque aspects of the Natural Selection experience, and in that light a chat with one of the judges seemed an essential port of call. 

Because, as a cursory examination of the snowboarding conversation has revealed, the judging at this year’s event has been subject to criticism, whether below the line, among the community at large and even among the riders themselves, 

So to try and understand the judging process a little bit more clearly, and to get insights into some of the more contentious calls from this year’s Jackson event, I grabbed Sandy for a chat. 

And what a revealing insight into the the whole judging process this conversation really is. I approached this one by trying to think about what questions I want answered as a fan, and to try and address as many of the issues and explicit criticisms that I’ve seen doing the rounds in the aftermath of the event. 

Huge thanks to Sandy for being such a good sport in this one, and for tackling each of these questions with total accountability and transparency. I leaned a lot and I hope you do too.

Tickle My Moose Knuckle - Heaps Left

This set was the final closing set on Monday morning at Bass Coast 2018 on Slay Bay Stage. It was recorded live off the video board and you can feel the spontaneous imperfection.  Morning sets are all about living in the moment, sharing the first rays of sunlight as they warm up the ground, and feeling a connection with everyone else there. The closing hours of the festival are gentle, quirky, and full of beauty. This mix is a lush and warm collection of my favourite sounds from various artists.  I hope you enjoy.  PS the recording was clipping so it's a little rough around the edges...but thought I'd share anyway.

Live At Bass Coast 2018 - The Librarian Closing Sunrise Set

The latest installment in the Booms and Claps mix series comes to us from a British duo who we've had our eyes on for a few years now: the collaborative project of Will Marquiss & Mike Holliday AKA Mystic State. It's hard to put these two in a box, with influences ranging from drum and bass and jungle to hip-hop and R&B down to dubstep and garage, but with an impressive list of label affiliations including J:Kenzo's Artikal Music and uptempo titans like Flexout Audio and Halogen Music, their unique and clean production style clearly rings true whatever the genre. We first took notice of Mystic State several years back with their vibey footwork-adjacent beat "808 Gravediggin'" on the aforementioned Halogen Music, and since then, we've seen them release everything from meditative 140bpm stompers to chunky hip-hop beats that you would probably catch on Noisia Radio. Although both members hail from the Bristol area, they're now split internationally, with Will in Calgary, AB (We sure do love our neighbors to the North!) and Mike still in the UK, so expect to see more North American appearances from Mystic State soon! We're very excited to welcome them to the mix series, and without further ado, we're proud to present BnC Mix 045: Mystic State.
