Hello gents, hope you're slowly recovering from the xmas & nye craze ! Here is the first premiere of 2016 by Cliff Lothar. We' re long fans of the man here at LYO and you must have heard some of his previous og pearls or remixes on Viewlexx, Skudge, WT, Hivern Discs or Turbo if you weren't living on the moon those two last years ! We know winter is finally here & it's time to comeback to work then hide your tears in the rain and take a big sip of Adam's ale with this H20 trip by mysterious Cliff Lothar. Appendix may refer to any text added to the end of a book or an article, containing information that is relevant to the main subject matter. Not that this is a way to say that this is the end of Shabu Recordings in any way, but rather a call back to Norwell’s work while using its previous incarnation as a starting point to elaborate and expand the world created previously. Although, it focuses on different events and it stands on its own as its own entity.

Appendix starts off where Norwell’s previous release on Shabu, I Kissed The Sun, left off : a big morning stroll in a psychedelic forest with unseen, yet familiar, creatures inhabiting it. Willie Burns (The Trilogy Tapes/WT Records/ L.I.E.S. Records) complements this unusual walk in the woods by absorbing it into his warehouse banger signature. Burns’ rework focuses on micro-events of the original to create a sort of granular House version out of them.

The adventure continues on a somewhat melancholic turn with We Have Been Here Before and Sometimes as the B Side. While We Have Been Before is a more dancefloor-oriented take to Krautrock’s signature synthline layering, Sometimes is Norwell’s venture into a more Techno universe than he’s mostly associated with to come out with a soothing, yet banging work.

As digital bonuses, Norwell offers Glimpse : a short but catchy synth jam riddled with different layers of complexity. This piece is then taken into obscurity by Farbwechsel Records’ boss S Olbricht for a ride into a 80s-cyberpunk club where people are trying to dance their problems away in a dystopian world.

The label’s inaugural release, Ad Astra, represents the fruits of a collaboration that has been a long time in the making. Kiss, fresh off the back of his evolutionary Strangers EP on Mörk, partners with compatriot Norwell, who is following up a prolific 2017 – one in which Helena Hauff named his ODD EP her favourite record of the year.

Crisis’ five-track debut is an exploration of mutual sonic interest: sci-fi narrative and analogue dedication combine to reinterpret and evolve the blueprint electro it draws influence from. Opening-track Tempel 1’s beatless synth ode paves the way for the fearless machine-funk workout to come – the calm before the storm, as it were. But you’d be forgiven for thinking the EP treads similar ground as it progresses. The eponymous track’s tonal restraint is the yin to the jugular yang of Alpha Hertz, whilst Motor City Dreams’ wistful beauty is a world away from the ancestral void of Density Waves.

And as such, Ad Astra plays masterfully with its core themes. Tension and release, dystopia and utopia, past and future… This is a bold statement of intent from an institution that will continue to be synonymous with progressive electronica.

It’s almost a daunting task to keep track of the entirety of brothers Dual Shaman’s output. They’ve released with Wide Angle Recordings, Manual Music, Wolfskull Ltd., Cinematique and many more, amassing an impressive back-catalogue of sophisticated, high-end melodic techno. As ShamanStems, they’ve crafted countless commercial sample packs and sound libraries, of countless sorts, winning awards, topping charts and insuring that even the most casual of listeners have heard their work, whether knowingly or less so. And, with their “Khorostasia” single, they provided the swansong to now-suspended cyberpunk imprint Tessier-Ashpool Recordings – progenitor to, and now subsidiary of Drastic Arts. It was very fitting that Dual Shaman would score the “opening ceremony” to our newly minted multimedia collective… so they did, writing their first full-length material as well, in the process. As such, Drastic Arts is proud to present DADA001: “Expiati”, an uncompromising and many-pronged account of atonement – theirs, ours, yours.

Many languages are at play here. Ecclesiastic Latin accounts for most of the track titles. Devotional live outboard improvisation accounts for most of the songwriting process. Schizoid acid riffs account for most of the bite. A sylvan, deeply nocturnal strain of New Beat accounts for most of the emotional context. Clipped, industrial dialects of techno and electro account for most of the rhythmic underpinnings of this 9-track communiqué. And, for a single standout track, their native Romanian accounts for most touching invocation of rain.

Frequency-modulated hats ricochet about as gabberized depth-charge kicks interrupt lung-imploding reeses. Midrange percussion so crisp it’s edible splays itself around vocal centrepieces warped beyond recognition. Tasteful bouts of braindance edit mania set the stage for tour de force solos. Equally suitable for switched-on club settings and as BGM for retro Twitch streaming.

We swear this is not some ‘98 release we dug up and are re-releasing. It was first thought up in 2016. Finished in 2017. In 2018, finally released. A love letter to 20 years ago, a love letter to 20 years from now. And in spite of the title… atonement for neither.

This album was not written good, nor well. It's great and exceptional. Norwell, the producer who needs no introduction, on label Dalmata Daniel, this marks their second collaboration of spacey tunes, and hard-hitting electro. Vocals are from Angela Santa, it's an exciting new territory for Norwell, and the song starts off Dalmata Daniel's new line of releases, the DDD digital line with an amazing vibe. 

You should keep listening, and exploring different moods on this trip in outer space, with Farkas through the Interkosmos.
