The sound of gentle waves on pebbles, within a small cove at Gialiskari (Palaiochora) beach.

This recording commences not more than about half an hour after several days of heavy rain abated... During most of this recording, it is no longer raining, but rain water accumulated on eucalypt trees and grass trees continues to drip from boughs, branches and leaves for many hours... Wind conditions were mostly calm, but occasional breezes passed through the space. The recording location is three and a half kilometres from the southern coastline of the Fleurieu Peninsula, at an elevation of 280 metres: a coastline of cliffs and rocks. In the stillness of the night, the ocean's surging, and even occasional waves thumping upon rocks or against cliffs, can often be clearly heard.

This excerpt from a longer recording runs from 00:16:30 to 03:40:15. (The longer recording continues through First Light and Sunrise into Morning.) It was recorded with a pair of Sennheiser MKH 8020s in AB array with 62 cm spacing into a Sound Devices MixPre-6 II. This is the original recording, unedited and unprocessed, recorded at a preamp gain setting of 65 dB.

The environment within which, and the land upon which, this recording was recorded, has been, is now, and will always be, under the spiritual and physical custodianship of the indigenous Ngarrindjeri and Kaurna peoples, who understood so much more deeply and fully than our culture does today, that the land, the water, and the sky are not 'our property'; rather, we belong to them, we depend upon them, as a foetus in the womb depends upon its mother. The birth that humanity strives for is  not a physical, merely 'material', birth. But very few understand what this means. Even if we travel to other stars, in search of another 'virgin' planet to strip bare, rape, and exploit for meaningless and useless 'profit' and 'power' that serves no better purpose than a means to further increase equally meaningless and useless 'profit' and 'power', we will necessarily be enveloped in space craft, dressed in space suits, housed under airtight domes, that carry with them, within them, the original air and nutriments of our mother planet - as a reminder of our hubris, our ignorance, our arrogance, our stupidity, our greed, and ... our species and civilisational immaturity.

The waves breaking, probably one of the most recorded sounds. But I never actually made a proper recording of it. I accidentally drove past the beach when I realized there were no people and there was no wind. A good opportunity to make a recording. Recorded around 21:30hrs on March 5th, 2014.

Short meditation from Spooner's Cove

Recorded in 4-channel surround sound beneath a tree in Tamagawadai Kōen (多摩川台公園), Den-en-chōfu, Tokyo, New Year's eve into New Year's day. Distant temple bells can be heard approximately 7hrs and 15min into the recording... Rather homesick for Japan, we have a tradition at home of playing this track in the house all day/night when the time of year comes. I felt it would be special to share it here for those who also appreciate these long, ambient recordings.

Zrobiłem sobie kolację i zamiast tylko siąść do stołu i zjeść, postanowiłem napalić w kominku i zjeść w takiej atmosferze. W porównaniu do ilości pracy, którą trzeba włożyć w rozpalenie pieca w kotłowni, kominek na drewno to żaden wysiłek i jedynie chwila przygotowania. Zjadłem, wypiłem piwo, a ogień z kilku kawałków modrzewia dalej się palił. Modrzew leżał w ogródku z wyrwanymi z ziemi korzeniami, powalony przez jakąś wichurę, jeszcze zanim tu przyjechałem. Pod koniec lata, kiedy bałem się, że nie będę miał na zimę dość drewna, poszedłem do niego z piłą łańcuchową i pociąłem na kawałki. Porąbany, przeleżał kilka miesięcy w kotłowni, przytulony do pieca węglowego i wysechł na wiór. Jak już teraz go rozpaliłem rozpaliłem, szkoda mi było nie zostać przy ogniu, więc poszedłem po gazetę i rozpoczęty poprzedniego wieczoru artykuł i doczytałem przy kominku.
Z czasem dołączył do mnie kot, pochwalić się upolowaną kulką papieru. Pokręciła się, obwąchała i poocierała się o rejestrator i usiadła zaraz za nim, naturalnie na etui na słuchawki.

Na stole, przy którym siedziałem, leży martwy motyl. Znalazłem go w kotłowni, za jednym z kartonów z rozpałką. Ma rozłożone na płasko skrzydła, a nie jak to przeważnie jest, kiedy zastygają i umierają, złożone. Obrus, na którym leży jest w kwiecisty wzór.

I made myself dinner and instead of just sitting down and eating, I decided to light a fire in the fireplace and eat in this atmosphere. Compared to the amount of work that needs to be put into lighting the furnace in the boiler room, a wood fireplace is no effort and only a moment of preparation. I ate, drank beer, and the fire from several pieces of larch continued to burn. There was a larch in the garden, uprooted, blown down by some gale before I got here. At the end of last summer, when I was afraid that I wouldn't have enough wood for the winter, I went to it with a chainsaw and cut it to pieces. Chopped, it lay for several months in the boiler room, cuddled against the furnace and dried as a bone. Now that I had lit it, I did not want to leave the fire, so I went to get the paper and the article I had started the night before and finished reading it by the fireplace.
At some point, the cat joined me to show off the ball of paper she caught. She hung around, sniffed and rubed against the recorder and sat down right behind it, naturally on the headphone case.
The fireplace is built-in, with a glass door. A few minutes after lighting the fire, when a draft is created in the chimney, it can be opened and the smoke does not escape into the room. The fire burns slower than with the door closed when the air vent is open. I closed the door a couple of times to let the air vents blow on the fire, which was slowly dying out. With an open fireplace, the heat flows more freely into the room and it is even more pleasant.
There is a dead butterfly on the table where I was sitting. I found it in the boiler room, behind one of the tinder boxes. Its wings are spread flat, not folded, as is usually the case when they freeze and die. The tablecloth on which it lies is in a floral pattern.
