Several characteristics, mostly relating to the form of the voices, were similar in these two groups: loudness, location, personification and number of voices. Other characteristics differed significantly: frequency, duration, controllability, emotional valence and the distress caused by the voices are quite the opposite in both groups. Furthermore, emotional valence of content alone could predict the presence of a psychotic disorder in 88% of the participants, pointing out that clinicians should inquire after the content of the voices and preferably more voice-characteristics before considering the diagnosis of a psychotic disorder.
