Charlatan was written while driving through the farmlands of Minnesota, trying to wrap my head around why certain groups of Americans voted the way they did in 2016. It's also a warning of what can happen when someone is taken in by a political grifter. 

This is a solo acoustic version, recorded/engineered by Sam McKinney as part of the Brown Arts Initiative Songwriters Workshop.

When you start off with nothing           
What more can you expect            
When you’ve lost nearly everything
How much worse can it get

So you pray for a prophet	          
To lead you out of your loss  	    	
When you’ve worked near every            
muscle to the bone
The ends will justify the cost
  
It isn’t easy/ It’s just plain hard      
Misplaced your dignity              
lowered your guard
Then a hero appears
out of the fog

He’s a Charlatan
and they follow him
right into the mountains
A charlatan and they wallow in 
the glory of the grift
A blind piper leading the blind
Off of a cliff

Who could blame them for believing          
I think I’d wanna believe too
‘magine a wealthy man 
with a rags-to-riches tale
who talks just like you do

Now he’s peddling snake oil         
Preaching bout better days ahead
Grabbing up handfuls of that worthless soil
Gonna stain his hands red


It isn’t easy / These are strange times
The truth is slippery / dripping in lies
Then a hero appears
who’s heard your cries

tinctures and cures
to hundreds of masses
who think they’re unheard
In gold plated glasses
he’ll rise like the sun
Leaving you with less than
before he had come.

Heather Rose In Clover use the sharp end of their broken hearts to sculpt 90’s rock into polished, alterna-post-punk-pop. Rhode Island natives Lisa Middleton, Heather Rose, and Greg Hall combine their talents to create a fresh mix of rich musical styles while ignoring genre boundaries, but never misplacing their rock n’ roll roots. Together they have built a new musical structure atop the pop rock foundation Heather Rose solidified throughout her extensive music career! HRIC are a dynamic trio who get their indie sound from the alternative rock of the 90’s. Sometimes Grunge. Sometimes Pop. Sometimes both and then some. These Providence, RI rockers will give you all the feels, including those felt during a bad breakup or after watching a sappy made-for-tv movie.
