Me and Mr Wolf

Stockholm-based Dream Pop band Novah have teamed up with acclaimed singer/songwriter Amanda Mair for new single ‘Ghost’. This follows their debut EP ‘Alaska’, which won them fans across Scandinavia, North America and the UK.
 
Taking their cues from the likes of Broken Social Scene, Beach House and The Radio Department, the track features industrial drum grooves, which are juxtaposed with haunting piano chords and Mair’s delicate voice.
 
On working with Amanda Mair Novah told us: “Amanda is a really cool artist, we’ve been talking for a long time about doing a collaboration with her and when this song came up it just felt right.” 
 
Having recorded their debut EP on a remote island, a studios’ individuality has a significant effect on Novah’s recording process: “We were recording in Stockholm in a studio with an old upright piano, and started messing around with complex beats on a drum machine and then adding piano chords together with it. It took a while before it turned into something you can actually listen to… but it ended up as a beautiful song and we are very proud of this one!”
 
Novah consist of David Tranberg on Vocals/Guitar, Simon Hagström Rennerstedt on Vocals/Guitar/Keys, and Filip Hagström Rennerstedt on Bass. Raised on the same street on an island outside Stockholm, they played in different formations during their early teenage years until they decided to form their first band together at the age of 15 with British Indie as a common musical thread. The project quickly became serious, and their melancholic sounds can be heard on TV shows on networks such as MTV – their intense crescendos are the perfect backdrop for emotional drama.

“Lyrically, Nobody Else is a tribute to the Caribbean novel Wide Sargasso Sea by the Creole writer, Jean Rhys. The novel is a response to Brontë’s Jane Eyre, in which the landowner keeps his Jamaican wife locked up in the attic, allegedly because she is mad. Wide Sargasso Sea tells the story of the “mad woman of the attic” and with this cool tone of tristesse, the book describes the wickedness, the Jamaican landscape and the eternal drinking of rum. 

“This song came along in such a lovely way. I met one of my oldest friends in a studio one day and I hadn’t heard what he had been working on for ages. He played me this beat and I fell in love immediately. I went on to do a few things on top of it and a few days later his band’s singer and I met with Off Bloom who helped us do the vocal-melodies. When I got home that day I played it to my girlfriend and she came up with the lyrics for the song.” 

“This way of working is the reason why I love producing and writing music. To involve a lot of the people you love and trust and make them do their best. I’m probably the one who made the least on this track - I just collected people’s ideas - it’s very beautiful I think.”

Nobody Else

Emmecosta released their nocturnal Velour EP over the summer, gaining praise from Stereogum, Clash Music and other tastemaker blogs. Now, the song returns to the table after being chewed up and reshaped by the mysterious producer called Mouthe.

Both Skrillex and Diplo, purveyors of weird and wonderful music, have recognized the faceless man with massive chompers for his deep psychedelic hip-hop. In this remix, Mouthe pitches up the vocals and loops the lyrics “I need you / I need your fire” above liquid Flume synths. Subtle hints of steel drums and 8-bit sounds inject tropical game vibes from Wave Racer’s future pop world. Altogether, the remix is a bouncy genre departure for both Emmecosta and Mouthe, who both benefit from exploring new sounds.

Flora Cash are a testament to the power of music bringing people together. The couple met on Soundcloud in 2012 looking for new music. Since then, Cole Randall (USA) and Shpresa Lleshaj (SWE) fell in love with each other’s sound which led to a musical and personal partnership spanning 5 years now. 

Back in April 2017, the duo released their album, Nothing Lasts Forever (And It’s Fine), via Icons Creating Evil Art. Their tracks “You’re Somebody Else’’ and “The Bad Boys’’ earned praise from Noisey, Paste, The Music Ninja, Earmilk, Interview Magazine and other tastemaker blogs. Mountain Bird and Kulture revamp these two melancholic acoustic tracks in the Retrospective remix pack.  

The original track “You’re Somebody Else’’ gently blends acoustic soundscapes and layers of atmospheric production hinting at Mt Wolf, Poliça, and Vogue Dots. Kulture transforms the song into a tropical house anthem; emphasizing the acoustic guitar and piano chords, while preserving Cole’s emotional vocals. 

“The Bad Boys’’ emphasizes melancholic vocals accompanied by acoustic guitar, creating a haunting melody fit for a crime drama like True Detective. Swedish electronic producer Adam Öhman, better known as Mountain Bird, sends the vocals echoing into a void until the drop unites airy synths with heavy beats and a tropical steel drum. His indie-electronica songs have gained traction on BBC Radio 6music, Radio X, Absolute Radio, Nordic By Nature and Spotify’s Top 100 Indie Tracks of 2016.
