Gil Scott Heron vient de rejoindre Lady Day et John  Coltrane au panthéon des artistes afro-américains. Son influence sur la musique actuelle est revendiquée tant par des artistes soul et hip-hop que par des chanteurs de pop ou de rock. Patchworks , le musicien et producteur derrière tant d’excellent projets funky comme Mr President, MJA où Mister Day, a lui aussi été transformé par l’écoute du poète soul. Il lui a donc dédié ces deux thèmes émouvants qui évoquent les magnifiques compositions des mid-70s avec Brian Jackson, à qui la flûte de  Guillaume Clary fait immédiatement penser. ‘RIP with Lady Day, RIP with John Coltrane’.


Gil Scott Heron has joined Lady Day and John Coltrane in the pantheon of African-American artists. His influence on modern music is claimed by both artists soul and hip-hop singers as pop or rock. Patchworks, musician and producer behind many excellent projects as funky Mr President,Mister Day, was also transformed by listening to the poet's soul. He has dedicated both emotional themes that evoke the wonderful compositions of mid-70s with Brian Jackson, whom the flute played by Guillaume calls to mind'. 'Lady Day with RIP, RIP with John Coltrane'.

David Walter’s activities in front of and behind the camera kept him away from the musical studios for several years. Five of those years spent travelling the world for “Les Nouveaux Explorateurs”, the French TV channel, Canal+, to meet the gatekeepers to the musical hearts of Africa, South America & Asia. 

These rewarding experiences gave David time to digest what he’d experienced. Now David Walters has chosen a path of writing and performing, this route that led him to the prolific producer from Lyon, in the form of Patchworks (aka Mr President, aka Voilàà Sound System, aka Da Break...) The two musical masterminds often accustomed to composing, playing and recording their own music, soon tuned in to each other and quickly realized they were on the same frequencies.

With Patchworks, David found the type of sound engineer he was looking for and the duo were soon off treading the right musical path.

Ahead of his upcoming album in 2020 on Heavenly Sweetness, here’s is the first taste, ‘Mama’. A track in which the balafon’s woody resonance takes centre stage, some meditative flute and the female choruses give David Creole roots some real shine.  His Caribbean grandfather exiled to New York but in the title, Mama, a dedication to his grandmother, who after the last soaring electro-disco, she comes to declaim the text on the ultimate measures.

Ses activités devant et derrière la caméra l’ont éloigné des studios pendant plusieurs années. Pendant cinq ans exactement. Cinq ans durant lesquels il aura parcouru le monde pour les Nouveaux Explorateurs de Canal +, pour rencontrer celles et ceux qui font chauffer le coeur musical de l’Afrique, de l’Amérique du Sud ou de l’Asie,
Le temps de digérer ces expériences enrichissantes comme plusieurs vies, et David Walters a repris le chemin de l’écriture et des maquettes, une route du groove qui l’a mené jusqu’au prolifique Patchworks (Mr President, Voilààà Sound System, Da Break...). Comme une évidence, les deux mastermind musicaux souvent habitués à composer, jouer et enregistrer seuls leurs musiques, se sont accordés et ont rapidement compris qu’ils étaient sur les mêmes fréquences.

Et avec Patchworks, David a trouvé le metteur en son qu’il recherchait, le binôme rêvé pour se remettre sur les bons rails musicaux.

Avant un album à venir en 2020 sur Heavenly Sweetness, Mama en est le premier extrait. Un titre où la résonance boisée du balafon, la flûte méditative et les choeurs féminins reviennent aux racines Créoles de David, rappellent le souvenir de son grand-père Caribéen exilé à New York mais, surtout, un titre dédié à sa grand-mère. Elle qui après les dernières envolées electro-disco vient déclamer le texte sur les ultimes mesures.

Guts, a producer exiled in Ibiza, and Mambo, a Los-Angeles-based painter, have been lounging on the shore with the sound of the waves lapping in the background as they sift through the vinyl for their Beach Diggin’ collection. Far, far from the mouldy-smelling, lightless cellars where record hunters usually hang out. Diggin’ disks as others dig beaches, because getting your hands on a good vinyl, its grooves virtually unexplored, is like stumbling on a dazzling expanse of virgin sand.
Guts and Mambo have little time for the idea that Brazilians have to play bossa nova, Cubans must salsa and a Jamaican has to be into reggae. They sniff around the blind spots away from the beaches packed with noisy tourists and come up with Italians who beat out Afro rhythms, West Indians who lay down earth-shaking dub beats, and Trinidadians who unleash funk laced with lots of brass. Not to mention Peruvians, Frenchies and even Spaniards who can recreate the atmosphere of a humid, totally torrid sixties Rio party.
On the seafront, Guts and Mambo have put together a 16-track playlist that is hip without being elitist, guided by the highest standards and unwavering principles of sun, escapism, the good life and nothing below 25°C.
Seventeen tracks are stamped on the pages of the record’s passport - boss nova, soul, jazz, latin, afro-funk and tropical -, souvenirs of travels through North and Latin America, Africa, Europe and the Caribbean islands.
Intoxicating tunes, radiant rhythms, velveteen vocals: Beach Diggin’ is for sipping through a straw, wiggling your hips and shaking your pelvis to, and it’s made to bring bodies into friction.
