Still needs mixing and mastering, but this remix has worked out quite well :)

Final version will hopefully be available soon.  I'm waiting for a copy of the original Inspectah 12" to arrive in the post so I can replace the low bitrate vocal, then it's off to Lack of Afro's studio for the mix.

A bit of info about this track: the accapella is from Inspectah Deck's "City High" (currently a low quality mp3 in this version) and the beat is from an old Willard Burton & The Funky Four 7" (lifted from the original record).

It started off with me just making  re-edit of the funk track, extending the break and creating about 16 new drum patterns from the first bar of the break (as highlighted on the timed comments at about 0:20).  I then added the accapella, and restructured the track to fit.

The original track varies between 85 and 88BPM, and in my edit only the sections with my chopped up beat are strictly 87.  The additional bars (key sections, etc.) are at their original tempo.

This may seem like an ill-advised choice, but I really wanted to capture the authentic old school feel of early hiphop tracks where the beats had a lot of swing.  Although I haven't used an MPC (instead I cut and rearranged the drums manually using the antiquated Cooledit Pro and it's multi-channel editor*) I hope I've managed to capture the sound and style of one.  

(* I've been using Cooledit Pro for ten years now!  I am well aware that it is really shit, but I kind of like the fact that it is user-unfriendly and there are no proper shortcuts - it forces you to do everything manually, which takes time but yields good results).

Next step for this track is to replace the vocal with a cleaner recording, then I'll add some tight cuts provided by another Exeter DJ to the two instrumental breaks in the second half.  I'm not sure if the final version will be available for download here, as I've had some interest from a local bootleg label.  However, I'll still reply to requests for links via the message system.

Oh, and I know it is uncool to brag, but Phill Most Chill (Soulman) says "I'm diggin' that beat! Nice work, I like that funk 45 sound...good shit".  That comment alone has made 2011 a great year for me ;)

Should have uploaded this years ago really.  Cheeky Busta Rhymes bootleg made for my Sound Killa! mix.

Nothing special, just an accapella chopped up on top of a cover of the 80's Paper Boy arcade game theme by funk stalwarts The Delicious Allstars (plus a few soundboy samples on top).

Dropped the last verse to keep the track short enough for a 7".

Heavy Stylus - Got You All In Check (Paper Boy Edit) (2009)

Really nothing special, but found it this evening whilst sorting out tracks for a gig this weekend.  Uploaded here for the hell of it.

The original (an early GAMM release) is far more cut up with additional sections and contains more vocal samples - I edited it (slightly) just using my favourite parts to give it a more consistent groove for use as a simple DJ tool.  At some point I might go back to it to edit the track more thoroughly...

The story behind this track is that I purchased the record from Juno after hearing a 30 second snippet (of just the best part).  Usual case of being annoyed that the track was not what I had hoped it would be, so I sat down for 30 minutes or so and chopped it to my specifications ;)

Anyway, it's sufficiently edited for it to be classed as such, but not enough to be a 'proper' remix.

DJ Prao-D & Boogie B - Breaks Seminar (Part 6) (HS B-Boy Disco Re-Edit) (2007) (WIP)

Live recording, warts and all, captured live from my short set on Saturday night at Hatherleigh Carnival (I was filling in between the two bands whilst they sound checked).

I'm used to playing 4-5 hour sets, so this mix was quite challenging to put together, trying to smash through 17 tracks across multiple genres (hip-hop/disco/funk/house) within 40 minutes, with the additional requirement of keeping it family friendly.

Being a bit of a perfectionist, I don't often like to post 100% live recordings (the occasional beat slip, level changes or lazy cut ends up bugging me on later listens) but I was pretty happy how this one turned out. DJ Heavy Stylus - Hatherleigh Carnival Set (Live 13.11.2021)

Just like my homework as a kid, I left recording this competition entry to pretty much the last minute after first seeing it advertised months ago! Recorded straight from the decks with no post production, this is as raw as it gets - 30 minutes of bassbin-booming old school hip hop block party jams, with a few recent edits thrown in for good measure. On and on till the break a dawn!

Heavy Stylus - Altitude Festival DJ Compo Entry 2022

'Freak the Funk' is an extended re-recording of the interval mix I played at 2022's Hatherleigh Carnival between the two sets played by local indie rockers 'The Wreckords'. DJing after a band is always a challenge, especially if you're a hip hop DJ facing a crowd that have been whipped up into a frenzy by a band playing uptempo classic indie covers for the past hour. Unprepared and desperately flicking through my box looking for an accessible launch record, I pulled out Jimi Hendrix's 'Crosstown Traffic' and its sample borrowing UK cousin 'I'm Ready', before cutting into the Nas classic 'Hip Hop is Dead' and War's 'Me and Baby Brother'. From that point I was on a roll - working through a stack of raw 60s r&b and funk before breaking back into hip hop with 45 Live's release of the previously lost Outlaw Posse cut 'Living in Hackney', purely selected because after a few pints 'Hackney' sounds not too dissimilar to 'Hath'leigh', twisting the track into an unintentional rural anthem!

I've no doubt that the majority of the dancers would have preferred a straight-up indie rock set, but by the time I dropped Daytoner's Wiseguys-apeing 'Ooh Lalo' they were well and truly won over. And then the band came on again and smashed it out of the park.

Anyway, I'd been working on the bar all evening prior to my set and was a few pints in myself, so I couldn't recall exactly what else I played during the intermission, but this mix pretty much covers what I do remember. Although I'm pretty sure I dropped Back by Dope Demand, White Lines and Super Fly at some point, which didn't make it into this version. Recorded straight from the mixer in a single take for that authentic live vibe, raw and uncut, this is rock 'n' roll soul!

(I thought I'd already uploaded this mix back in 2020, but it looks like I forgot - so here it is now, nearly three years late!)

With three kids and a demanding job, finding the time to organise and record a mix at home has become near impossible. That is, until the world got shut down thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. Silver linings and all that.

Inspired by my recent gig at Exeter's best-in-beer-n-beats 'Angel Bar', I've tried to capture the sweaty, bassbin-booming, sticky-floored vibe of the night by re-recording an early part of my four-hour set; a mix of infectious funk, dirty soul, crackly beats and heavyweight hip hop complete with loose scratches, rough live looping and *I'm-having-way-too-much-fun* turntable spin-backs.

'Can’t, Won’t, Don’t Stop' is more than just a mix - it’s a tribute to 25 years behind the decks.

From block party breaks to neck-snapping boom-bap, this hour-long session cuts deep into the DNA of funk, hip-hop, and sample-heavy soul. Expect a hard-hitting mix packed with golden-era grit, b-boy breaks and underground heat.

Every one of these 26 tracks tells a story. They've rocked sweaty basements, backrooms, festival tents and city dive bars with sticky dancefloors. They’ve provided the soundtrack to late-night drives through Devon’s country lanes and dusty-fingered digging excursions in Bristol and record shops further afield.

After a hiatus of seven(!) years, I finally made time to drop a new mix. As the name suggests, this one is a pretty raw 60-minute mix of 23 of my favourite records from my DJ crate. Starting on a laid-back soul/funk tip, then progressing through some classic hip hop cuts before locking into a steady groove around the halfway mark. Featuring tracks by Gang Starr, James Spencer, Jeru the Damaja, DJ Format, Neko Neko, Margo Thunder, Lord Finesse, Marley Marl, Black Moon, The O'Jays, Bar-Kays, EPMD and others.

Nothing overly technical going on here, just an hour of booming funk, neck-snapping beats and conscious raps.

This is my b-boy breakin' tribute to Ghetto Funk's origins and a fair representation of what I'd bring to Shindig; a raw build up of heavy funk breaks and beats to warm up for the weekend ahead.

Ghetto Funk & Shindig Weekender 2017 Competition Entry

Starting off as a 35 minute competition entry for the 2017 Shindig festival, I decided to extend the mix with some of the toughest, baddest F. U. N. K. breaks in my collection, resulting in a worthy follow up to the 'Raw Elements (Part One)' tape I dropped earlier this year.

Part Two is a tribute to all the current day DJs and acts that have inspired me over the past two decades; people like Boca 45, Smoove, Jorun Bombay, Jim Sharp, DJ Format, Nick Bike, Southpaw Chop, Marc Hype, Paul Nice, Phil Most Chill, Freqnik & WDRE, Soopasoul (and of course the pioneers before them).

The mixtape archeology continues...

I used to get a lot of stick from my mate Lack Of Afro for the way I recorded mixes before dropping this one; I used to hit record on the PC, then mix, make a mistake, rewind and mix again until finished. At the end I'd sit down in front of the PC and spend hours cutting out the sloppy bits, add extra production, remix stuff and so on.

Mr Afro was not happy with this at all. "Give me an hour straight funk mix, no tricks, just skills", he'd say everytime I gave him a new mixtape.

This live recording from 2006 is the result. It was used to promote our weekly 'Root Down' funk/soul/hiphop night, but this is the first time it's been available since we took our website down in 2007 :)

Whilst having a hard drive clearout I found a bunch of my early mixes that I hadn't listened to in a long time. Some have stood the test of time pretty well, others - not so much :)

This first one was based on a mix I originally recorded in 2002 for a 'Bedroom DJ' competition, then re-recorded in 2004 to tidy up a few bits I was unhappy with (when I moved to Exeter and was using this on CD to get gigs). It's the mixtape that started it all for me :)

"The Payback Mix (Pt. 1)" is still one of my favourites - an hour of non-stop heavy hip hop, ragga, and classic beats and breaks on an early Ninja Tune tip. I couldn't scratch for shit back then, but the mixing is tight. This is from back in the days when I used a portable minidisc player alongside my 1210's to drop samples(!)

Hold It Down! (Part One) is the first part of a series of mixes originally recorded to help promote nights and events run by Aaron 'Holditdown' Hornibrook. Basically, this series represents the music I played when I was DJing for him in the balcony room at Timepiece back in 2005-2008. I used to hand out copies of this mix on CDR from the booth whilst playing.

Primarily funk and old school hip hop, this particular mix is full of classic joints, and I still play most of these tracks in my DJ sets today.

The mixtape archeology continues! This second part of the "Payback Mix" was recorded in 2005 and, as with the first part, it was named after the short yet super-intense series of alcohol and marijuana-fuelled nights I ran with a bunch of friends in the back room of the Croft in Bristol back around 2002.

Although in my opinion it's not as tight as part one, this is still probably my most requested mixtape. As a direct continuation of part one, expect heavy funk breaks, hip hop beats and random stuff from small independent labels that you've probably not heard in ages.

The Payback Mix (Part Two)(2005)

Waxploitation was actually my second ever completed mix, and was originally recorded in 2004 during a phase of listening to a LOT of late 80's/early 90's cut and paste hiphop (Major Force & Coldcut in particular). Considering my lack of knowledge of the genre at the time, and despite the moody and dark overtones, this mix remains to date one of my favourites, and is definitely one for the 'hedz'. Consider it as my 'Solid Steel' mix.

I foolishly thought it would be a good idea to get 100 copies professionally pressed and try to sell them through various record stores in Bristol and Exeter. This cost me about £300 (IIRC), and I didn't see a penny back because I didn't bother checking sales at the record shops (I was a bit young and intimidated by record shop staff in those days)! However, they must have ended up in some people's collections as the mix has an entry on discogs.com and even occasionally sells on eBay!

Another blast from the past, an hour of booming hiphop classics, funk, breaks and beats that I was heavily into back in 2006. Some of the pre-dubstep bass music here by the likes of Tipper really acts as a timestamp. Good times!

Annoyingly, the remix of Das EFX and Danny Breaks I recorded for this mixtape was lost years back in a hard disk crash.

I recently picked up an AKAI MPX-16 and have been having way too much fun on it messing about with sampling old records and mashing up percussion heavy loops. I got a groove going this evening whilst recording into CoolEdit Pro and after a heavy cut 'n' paste session ended up with this filthy lo-fi 114BPM breakbeat track.

Rough edit of an absolute classic Frankie Cutlass jam, slightly rearranged with a few additional samples and chopped beats. Excuse the heavy crackle and cue-burn, I've had the original in my crate since 1996!

Here's my own personal edit of a classic disco jam from the Ultimate Breaks & Beats series, "Pussyfooter" recorded from the original 45 with that heavy, heavy break extended...

Pussyfooter (HS Edit) (2018)

A simple edit/DJ tool I threw together using parts from a classic Deadbeats track from 1995. The original is over 10 minutes long, whereas this version has the melody stripped out and simply concentrates on the percussive parts.

Completely forgot about this mashup - I don't think it was ever really finished, but the plan was originally to release it as a B-Side on a 7" bootleg with my 'Paper Boy' edit on the flip (https://soundcloud.com/heavy-stylus/heavy-stylus-got-you-all-in) ... But that never happened, and probably never will. So here it is, for free :D

Heavy Stylus: An explosive amalgamation of Jamaican roots, hip hop beats, heavy soul breaks and blaxploitation ghetto-funk.

I’ve been rocking funk/soul/beats/hiphop/roots for around 20 years in various bars and clubs across the South West, and have supported a wide range of acts and artists such including Jelly Jazz, Boca 45, Andy Smith, Quantic, Craig Charles, DJ Food, Bonobo, Gilles Peterson, Ugly Duckling and DJ Format.

Although I started as a vinyl-only DJ in Bristol, these days I use a pair of battle-scarred Pioneer CDJs as my weapons of choice. I’m currently a resident (of 11 years) at the Angel Bar on Queen Street, and in the past have held Exeter-based residencies at The Monkey Suit, Timepiece, Dr. Inks and Verve (now Urban Underground), as well as DJing regularly for Hold it Down.
