This month's Cottage Groove guest DJ mix comes to us from Ariel Zetina. Ariel is a Chicago based artist, focusing in music production and deejaying. Though her music can be considered techno, she takes inspiration from Chicago house, Belizean genres punta and brukdown, and the queer club scene worldwide. She's a resident DJ at the legendary Smartbar here in Chicago.

I feel fortunate to be a witness and listener of @lucytheliyou 's music. When I first listened to their album Welfare/Practice, I felt like they were speaking on something unspeakable and hidden, yet something lodged in my cells that I didn't even know needed to be said, until they are unearthed through another's psychic transmission. Lucy's mixtape "As Dialect, Forester's Architecture" is a heart-wrenching journey of undulating field recordings and wistful environments that too reminds me of the power a story has to reveal truth in the listener's soul.

San Francisco-based artist Lucy Liyou synthesizes field recordings, text-to-speech readings, poetry, and elements from Korean folk opera into sonic narratives that explore the implications of Orientalism and Westernization. Though their music reflects the work of genres such as post-industrial and musique-concrète, Lucy Liyou is greatly influenced by audiobooks as well as music from the Impressionist period and Neoclassical period. Liyou’s work has earned acclaim from Pitchfork, Bandcamp Daily, The Quietus, them., Tone Glow, Wire Magazine, NPR Music among others, and received notable airplay on NTS Radio, KEXP, NPR, and Sonos Radio’s Radio Hour with Thom Yorke. Lucy Liyou’s first two full-length albums Welfare / Practice were reissued on vinyl for the first time in May 2022 via American Dreams Records.

Shows Potential, Too Social In Class

The story goes that Kode9 first heard Loraine’s tracks after object blue spontaneously tagged him in an Instagram story last year featuring L performing live, prompting him to release her music. In June this year, it was announced that Loraine will be joining Hyperdub’s roster, one of the most coveted ranks of artists in all of electronic music. What came out of the signing was ‘For You and I’ - a profoundly human, sonically feral record that quickly topped most of September’s Best Of Albums list and has since garnered a ferocious fanbase with both the world’s leading DJs and producers, as well as the listening public.

We, as part of the Yugospheric continuum of electronic music collectives, have been ardent followers of Loraine’s work for some time now, and her music has touched both our own hearts and our CDJs'. Her Bandcamp has been steadily growing since 2015 - with an extremely humble approach to going about her music, the tracks she put out throughout the years are fiercer, more innovative, and more immersive than most of the stuff out there anyways. But it is with ‘For You and I’ that Loraine secured a lofty spot in the pantheon of contemporary, forward-thinking musical expression. We’re tempted to say this made her the perfect pick for our series, but we cannot resist in stating we are overwhelmed that she accepted our offer, and as all other artists we come in contact with do - with grace and chill.

The podcast she sent us was recorded during the end days of July — we decided to wait for the perfect timing after her debut album was released and she has recovered from all the acclaim heaped on her, to grasp momentum of her quite unrivalled ascent in recent weeks.

You can catch Loraine James performing at the finest avant-garde contemporary electronic music festival in the region - Ljubljana's Grounded Festival - where she will share the stage with DJs we’re blessed to have as close friends and collaborators — the Belgrade-based @saud and @icketa — as well as with VOLTA’s own @n-obezg. We sincerely hope you do - safe to say this young lady is currently one of the world’s most acclaimed alternative electronic artists, and we cannot overstate her relevance.
