Litter To Society (Lifelike Remix)

Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713) was one of the greatest violinists of his day, and was one of the most important Italian composers of the mid-Baroque. Based in Rome, his compositional style utilizes clean and regular phrases and an easy form of violin virtuoso writing that is never self-serving and always maintains an air of placidity. He is primarily remembered today for his violin sonatas, his trio sonatas, and his twelve concerti grossi for strings, not to mention his contributions to the establishment of tonal harmony.

The twelve concerti grossi of his op. 6 collection remain some of the most important examples of the concerto grosso for strings, and served as an example for countless composers after him, including Handel, whose own op. 6 collection bears more than passing resemblance to those of Corelli. Unlike later concerti that would possess only three or four movements, Corelli's concerti consist of five, six, or seven movements usually based upon court dances, many of which are somewhat short and in binary form or some variation thereof. The composer treats the full orchestra not so much as accompaniment, but rather as an extension of the solo trio of two violins and continuo, such that most of the concerti could easily be played without the ripieno ensemble (i.e., the larger string band).

Arcangelo Corelli – Concerto Grosso In D major, op. 6 no. 4

Antonio Juanas (ca. 1762-ca. 1821) was the final maestro de capilla of Mexico City Cathedral in Mexico's colonial era. A native of Spain, he arrived in Mexico in 1791, serving in that coveted role until his retirement and return to Spain in 1818.

Though we have no evidence for what specific occasion his setting of Psalm 112 was meant for, it could've easily been used for a Vespers service on a day whose readings called for that psalm. The setting is sectional, with a variety of moods and textures.

Antonio Juanas – Beatus vir

Davide Perez (1711-1778) was born in Naples and spent the earlier part of his career in southern Italy and Sicily. In 1752 he relocated to Lisbon upon the invitation of Jose I, whose daughters he taught music and for whom he served as mestre de capela in the Royal Chapel in Lisbon. He composed and produced many operas for that city's theaters, until most were destroyed in the earthquake of 1755. After that event, he spent the rest of his career focusing on church music (he only composed three operas after the earthquake).

This symphony, in three movements as one would expect from an Italianate sinfonia, is found in the archdiocesan archive of Durango, Mexico. It is not known how the manuscript got there, nor what purpose the piece served in the life of the cathedral. Its style is highly  theatrical, leading one to wonder if perhaps this was the overture to one of Perez's many operas.
