Albert’s Favourites are proud to present Hector Plimmer for the labels third release.

Hector burst onto the scene in 2014 with an appearance on Gilles Peterson’s ‘Brownswood Bubblers” Vol 11, alongside beatsmith Al Dobson Jr, jazz luminaries GoGo Penguin, and the ever soulful Moonchild. He went on to win the PRS Steve Reid InNOVAtion Award, firmly cementing himself on the ‘ones to watch’ list.

We started bumping into Hector around Crystal Palace, and he presented himself as a deeply humble man, quiet and introspective - and with a killer selection of vinyl, but it took a support slot at Soho’s Sounds Of the Universe (supporting fellow producer and long term friend Wu-Lu) to really turn our heads. 

Hector’s beats are constructed like small sculptures, each one with its own influences and palette, but all with a very signature sound. 

Eastern System is a real beat workout, with traces of Asia in its melodies, Africa in its rhythms and a stunning choral arrangement. This, layered with a charming and somewhat nostalgic main vocal, eventually turns into a hypnotic chant towards the close. A beautifully subdued track that still manages to deliver powerfully on the dancefloor.

Flip the disc and you meet ‘Kalimba’, another pulsing beat that’ll have you hooked right from the start. Frantic percussion and a wonky Kalimba drive this track along, pushing you into the middle section where it breaks down to drums and synths, transforming what was previously acoustic into electronic, pushing the track directly into 2016.

You can catch Hector around London, playing records and playing live. He has a regular show on NTS Radio – 92 Points – and also runs his event ‘Crates’ Upstairs at the Ritzy in Brixton. He is part of this years EFG London Jazz Festival, performing at The Forge in Camden on the 11th November.

Albert’s Favourites are extremely proud to present ‘Sunshine’, a new album from Hector Plimmer.

We first approached Hector after watching a live performance of his at the legendary ‘Sounds of the Universe’ Record store in Soho. He stunned us with his attention to detail in his productions, and we were keen to talk further. 

What we weren’t expecting was the full body of work that Hector sent over. Previously released work was mixed in with new unfinished ideas, and as we progressed we realized that there was already a good albums worth of material to work with. “It represents (in no particular order) my musical journey over the past 4 or so years, some of which may never have seen the light of day. All of the music in this album has come about as organically as possible, from tapping a light bulb I was changing to finding a sweet sounding Kalimba at Raw Material in Brixton and recording it on my phone (shout out to Miles laughing in the background of ‘Kalimba 2’).”

We whittled down the original folder to what we present to you today. ‘Sunshine’ is a well-rounded body of work that truly represents Hector’s influences and passions. From the frantic drum work of ‘Eastern System’ that we released back in December on 7” vinyl, to the ambient beauty of ‘Sunshine’, this album unfolds and morphs beautifully to capture the feeling of inner city dwelling. “The process also included finding out my next door neighbours Rob & Lu (Drahla) made amazing music & meeting Andrea (And Is Phi) at the Brainchild Festival Warm Up party in London last year.”

In the same way groups like Portishead and Leftfield captured a moment in time, Hectors work, although influenced by them, is also drenched in tribal rhythms and beautifully crafted bass. Melodies weave and shift to make way for glorious synths or vocal lines. Clearly influenced by beat makers like Flying Lotus and Theo Parrish, but with the subtleties of the classic Metalheadz era Drum and Bass, this album will definitely leave you wanting more.

XOA, led by London based producer and musician Nick Tyson, is set to release debut album ‘Way West’ on 14th June via Five Easy Pieces.

XOA means to look outwards; to draw inspiration from many sources. ‘Way West’ is alive with this: steeped in the rich analogue sonics of the past, the warmth of machines and influence from the sounds of London’s fervent music scene. Featuring a blend of contemporary electronic production and live instrumentation, 70s Afrobeat inspired drums and cosmic melodies are thrust into the present day with strong cues from house and techno.

Three vocalists contribute across the album, with Tyson choosing to work with singers he has a personal admiration and friendship with. Hollie Cook, known to many for her ethereal pop tinged reggae, delivers a sumptuous contribution on ‘Heartland’, adding a beautiful emotional dimension to the horn led track. Lulu Jones’ vocals are treated more as a sample for the garage tinged ‘Call On Me’ and Ruby Wood, of Submotion Orchestra, has worked with Tyson over a number of projects and their shared love of 90s soul comes to the fore on the laid back grooves and sun kissed ‘Only One Thing’. 

“When collaborating, especially with vocalists on melodic and lyrical ideas, it’s important to have that personal connection and respect for each other’s craft. That’s why I never ask vocalists to prepare anything in advance for the tracks, I like to get in the room and just see what happens in the moment, to trust each other’s ideas, and for it to be a natural, organic and spontaneous process”.

Collaboration has always been at the heart of the project for Tyson. He plays the bulk of the instruments on the album but invites Marijus Aleksa on drums to provide live energy, extra synth work from Parisian Kenzo Zurzolo, and a notable Rhodes solo from Johnny Tomlinson (a member of Bonobo’s live band) on ‘Osu’.

After well received releases on Soundway Records, Cin Cin (with Wayward) and Banana Hill (with Contours); ‘Way West’ shows another step up for Tyson as a writer and producer. 

“It feels like this project is coming alive for me, the music I envisaged in my mind a few years ago is being realised, and I’m proud of how it sounds”.

‘Way West’ is set to be released on 14th June 2019 via London based label Five Easy Pieces (Mo Kolours, Reginald Omas Mamode IV, Natureboy Flako, Royalty, Call Super) on vinyl LP and digital formats.
