Yesterday, I heard "Gold Rush" by Lucius on SiriusXMU after dropping my kid off at school.  A pleasant indie tune, and I liked the general vibe of it...so, when I got back to Phantom Laboratories West and considered what I wanted to work on...that vibe was where the river was taking me.  

And the result--sounds absolutely nothing like Lucius or "Gold Rush"....because, of course it wouldn't.  Why would it?  Are you new here?  

Everythinng, no matter what I intended to make or what inspired me, ends up sounding, somehow, like...Interbay.  

This is no different.  I aimed my starship towards indie and ended up with...what?  Potato salad?  (It certainly didn't go very far into space, that's for sure.)  

Want some soul horns?  Got 'em.  
Want to hear some blues growling?  Here you go! 
Want to hear some big fat drums with a bit of swing?  Oh yeah, they're in here! 
Want a calm and relaxed bass guitar that doesn't over do itself?  A measured agreement regarding inclusion!    

Somehow, my indie/indie rock vibe ended up with some weird glitchy synth and effected guitar fueled New Orleans blues...with horns?  

Seriously, this is just where this track went and I was helpless to stop it from going there.  

(The title comes from a mistake I made when I was saving the file early in the production of the track--and I give the track a temporary name that sometimes, but doesn't always, influence the track as it is being made...  Well, I had meant to type "Brass"--because I had just written the descending horn lick that you'll hear repeated throughout this track...and I have no idea if my fingers spasmed as I tried to type the second s and somehow managed to hit the h instead?  Or, if my spell check didn't believe that brass is a real world and changed it to brash?  However it happened, I kept the name--because...what ELSE was I going to call it?)

You've got some world music vocals in there, plus some women's vocals that bounce around the room...and then you've got some traditional blues vocals so bluesy that they might have come from an album called "Now, That's What I Call Blues Vocals."  

Strangely, for a bluesy song...the guitars are DEFINITELY on the funk side of things.  

And what's with that skittery mellotron-esque organ stuff?  

Honestly, this might not be an Interbay song at all...this might be evidence of some brain damage.  

And yet...I'm charmed by it!  I like all of the rough edges and the unexpected twists and turns.  It is rock solid--you won't get lost...though you might get bewildered.  (I am.)  

Give it a listen and see if YOU think I'm crazy or crazy like a fox (though, I think what the fox would say is that I'm pretty "out there.")
