@ethyene and his @moonrise-hill-material crew have come seemingly out of nowhere to become some of 2017’s most in-demand deep house & disco purveyors. Alongside Folamour, Kaffe Crème and St. Clair, the quartet have delivered tonnes of acclaimed music on their own and other labels <<du jour>>, as the French themselves might say. Ethyène’s love of hip-hop as well as 4/4 also shines through on this mix which takes in some of his downtempo excursions alongside dancefloor grooves, with plenty of unreleased action on the way. Sample-heavy, charming stuff with an almost pop-like sensibility. 

*How would you describe your sound?*

I mainly produce downtempo house music and hip-hop built around samples. As a producer who loves to sample, I guess my music is at the crossroads between all the genres I'm daily digging with an important focus on natural grooves & ‘90s black music.

*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* 

I've been listening to tons of hip-hop when I was younger thanks to my family living in Philadelphia which is close to NYC and is the city of Jazzy Jeff and The Roots. As a huge Nas fan, I think I discovered sampling through DJ Premier and immediately felt in love with it. I discovered then sample-based house music thanks to the French scene classics like Pépé Bradock, St Germain and started to have a huge interest in this genre until I got into the early Detroit house scene—Theo Parrish, Moodymann, Andrés—and decided this was the music I wanted to do.

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*

This mix features tracks from almost of my releases until today. I feel kind of proud to have been asked to record a 100% Ethyène mix and being able not to spend such an unpleasant hour listening to it, haha...

Lövestad - Miles [Freerange Records]

Dutch duo Lövestad may be a new name to many but probably not if you live in Holland, in which case you’ve more than likely caught them rocking their hardware based live set at Into The Woods, Welcome To The Future, Wildeburg and Loveland. To say these guys have become local heroes in their own country is something of an understatement, but they won’t be a best kept secret for too long having already been booked to play at some of Berlin’s best spots including Panorama Bar, Katerblau and IPSE.  What makes Lövestad so unique is that releasing records has always been secondary to performing live - something Jimpster relates to from his years spent touring with The Bays. With only a handful of self-released EP’s appearing on Bandcamp Lövestad can be seen as taking the classic band approach of building a fiercely loyal and genuine fanbase through a tireless gigging schedule.  Their infectious energy stands as a testament that good, honest musicianship, not to mention funk, is still alive and kicking in electronic music. 

 

Freerange are proud and excited to be giving Lövestad their first ‘official’ release in the form of the Miles EP including an original full length version, Jimpster Edit and Jimpster Dub. 

Focusing first on the original, we can hear how the duo’s hands-on, performance approach informs their studio productions.  Stemming from a live, improvised jam, Miles has a lovely loose feel and sprawling arrangement which imparts the sense of being created on stage in front of a packed dance floor.  The duo’s passion for jazz, fusion, funk, disco and house shines through with big stacks of analogue synths and Fender Rhodes flourishes adding to the warm, euphoric atmosphere of the track. 

 

Jimpster took the stems from the live recording and got busy on an edit which sees him tighten up the arrangement and add a little extra punch to the drums and percussion but without losing the uplifting, soulful spirit of the original.

On his Dub Remix, Jimpster pushes deeper, taking a more minimal approach, reducing everything back to a dubby, heads down shuffling groove and bringing the filtered bassline into focus. The result is a classic slice of Freerange deep house  which gives us the perfect alternative to the blissed-out vibes of the original version.

Heist Recordings was founded by Dam Swindle as a means to gain full control over their own releases, and to create a stage for likeminded musicians to showcase their music. From the first release on, Dam Swindle’s “Break up to make up” EP in summer 2013, Heist has been a go to label for proper underground house and electronic music. Now, nearly 40 releases and 5 compilations in, Heist has brought forward artists like Frits Wentink, Nebraska, Adesse Versions, Fouk, Kassian, Nachtbraker and Alma Negra and continues to search for new talent, with Lars & Maarten fully focused on the A&R side of the label. 

Up till 2016, remixes on the label have been solely done by other original Heist artists on the yearly “Round up EP”, where the remixer and remixee get connected by the luck of the draw and a limited edition double pack is put out. After that, Maarten and Lars decided it was time to add remixers to the EP’s as well, which saw interesting collaboration, expanded the label family with names like Matthew Herbert, Tom Noble, Pépé Bradock, Ge-ology and Byron the Aquarius. 

In 2023 we've celebrated 10 years of Heist Recordings. The year showed a whole batch of releases by new artists like Byron the Aquarius, Amy Dabbs and Cinthie and by Dam Swindle themselves.
