The perfect Sunday antidote: A Voyage of Spirits by Funky Chap.

Funky Chap, hailing from Lausanne in Switzerland, recorded this set in his little flat overlooking Lac Léman with the snowy mountains on the other side appearing slowly through the clouds whilst the sunshine caused an orange tinge on the clouds.  

With his musical world filled with groove and unexpectedness, Funky Chap’s idea behind this set was to do something different, putting unpredictable pieces of music together, with a hope of bringing about a few smiles and some music that the listeners haven’t heard before.

Spontaneous tales woven across vast landscapes atop an Axolotl as the sun slowly made its way across the horizon. I think this set captures something I learnt about myself at the burn, that I take myself where ever I go. All of the parts. The eclectic tangle of ups and downs and all that comes in between. Grateful for this moment in time and grateful to be able to share it.

After a deep, blissful sleep, the little witch woke up just before sunrise.  She quickly realized the little fluffy thing she was holding tenderly in her arms, was actually a lion cub and when looking around, she saw a lioness watching the two of them with endearment … clearly the cub’s mom.  Slowly it dawned to the girl that she had been sleeping in the middle of a circle of lions … easily the best possible protection in the savanna.  Despite being far away from her home forest in North-Western Europe, the little witch felt absolutely at ease.
Soon time had come to say goodbye to the friendly pride of lions and continue to fly into South/South-Eastern direction.  The girl flew over a wide variation of breathtaking landscapes, while the savanna gave way to forests and lakes and marshlands.  At one point, she saw several columns of black smoke rising up from the edge of a forest.  When she came closer, she realized the fires had been lit by humans in a deliberate effort to destroy the forest.  The little witch burst into tears at the sight of this senseless destruction.  Yet she followed her inner compass and continued to fly southwards, over a vast lush green forest.  The European girl had never seen such an immense forest, which was way bigger than all the forests of her homeland combined.  It was lush and green and full of majestic trees.  After flying over this rainforest for nearly one hour, the witch felt how her heart started to throb faster as her inner compass indicated that she was nearing her destination…

heuer präsentieren wir euch mal wieder einen speziellen »freunde für freunde mix« und wie soll es nach 4 jahren und 4 monaten auch anders sein, als dass er vom @seaside trip käpt’n kommt:

.... genau, er hat die zeitreise gewagt, er hat den gezeiten getrotzt, segel in stürmen verschlissen und nerven auf sandbänken gelassen, nur um uns nach all den jahren immer noch mit seiner musik zu erfreuen. sich noch immer selbst bezeichnend als »kind der ostsee«, unterwegs in vieler städte häfen, ein musikalischer wegbegleiter, schippert er die wellen quer und kreuzt ab und an die heimathä….äh mixserien-gefilde. so macht er am rostocker hafen längsseits fest und hängt seine wimpel und flagge in den heimatlichen ost-west wind. so sitzt er da, der alte bärtige mann, pafft sein pfeifchen und klönt mit jeder und jedem über die zeiten von … und … und weiß sein seemannsgarn zu spinnen. das webt er immer noch wunderbar in klangteppiche, mit welchen wir mal dahin treiben oder abtauchen, ohne je zu versinken. mit seinem mix für uns knüpft er an den ersten teil (the language of the depth bei akasha mexico erschienen) seiner neuen serie »the sunken sea« an und lässt uns 2 stunden an seinen geborgenen geheimnissen der tiefe teilhaben. »the sunken sea pt.2 -  the depth holds the secrets« ist ein weiterer konzept-mix, bei welchem mal wieder auf überraschende wie wundervolle art & weise klar wird: rolandson war, ist und bleibt einer der geschichtenerzähler, welcher keine angst hat unsere wahrnehmungen immer wieder auf’s neue in frage zu stellen und selbige zu erweitern. mit einer ultraleicht anmutenden feinfühligkeit fädeln sich trippige tracks und verborgene klang-juwelen hintereinander auf und verweben sich letztendlich mit ungehörten geräuschen, melodien und liedern zu einem klangteppich, der geheimnisse birgt aber auch frei gibt.

Good morning Hekske 😊

➢ I hope you agree to answer a few random and fun questions to share with our listeners?

Sure, it’s the first time of my life I’m doing some sort of interview (and probably the last time as well). So let’s do this 😊

➢ To start you off tell us what song puts you in a good mood when you wake up in the morning?

Well, generally I already wake up in a good mood every morning so no need to listen to music. Occasionally I’m listening to ‘4ware’ from Deadmau5 to pump myself full of energy for the whole day.

➢ About three years ago you decided to invite your first DJ guest onto your witchtapes podcast. Tell us briefly what was your dream then and how has it maybe changed today?

Well, in early 2017 I made the very first mini-mixes of my life (these are witchtapes 1-2-3). At that point I was contacted by a Tunisian artist named Samer Soltan and he asked whether he could release a mix on my soundcloud page. I replied that my page was not a channel, only to change my mind 24 hours later, so we gave it a go and that became Witchtape #4. And the rest is history. It was only 8 months later (with Witchtape #14) that I started writing fairy tales about the now-famous little witch. So it really took quite a while before my channel really took shape. At the start of my channel I was basically just clueless so there actually was no dream or vision … it just happened.

➢ As someone who also runs a podcast series, what are some of the criteria when inviting artists to do a mix for you?

When I sense that an artist is resonating with the mystic-magic vibe of my channel, an invitation may follow sooner rather than later 😊

➢ 2020 has been a difficult year for the music scene, how has it changed within your hometown and what do you think will be different in the future?

Oh well, my hometown is easily the sleepiest town in Belgium, with no such thing as a music scene, apart from a carnival band named ‘Fret Tet & The Swinging Tepelboys’ which you can translate as ‘Fred Tit & The Swinging Nippleboys’. But given the dramatic corona situation in Belgium, the nipples have stopped shaking in 2020 … the carnival parade of 2021 has already been cancelled so I guess the nipples will only resume swinging in 2022.

➢ Lastly, regarding this mix you have done for us, can you tell us a little bit of your thought process behind choosing the tracks you chose?

Last summer, while doing some paintwork in my house, I was listening on repeat to ‘Long Story Short’, an absolutely epic podcast from Vincent Gericke from 3 years ago. I decided to make some kind of tribute mix and picked 3 tracks from ‘Long Story Short’ and started weaving some new tracks around that, while preserving most of the original atmosphere. After that I got a bit stuck for a few weeks until out of the blue an unknown DJ gave me the id of a track I had requested over 1 year ago. So that became my opening track. Still the middle section didn’t work out, until all of a sudden I realized that I had an unreleased Vincent Gericke track somewhere on a USB stick (which he sent to me 2 years ago). And suddenly all pieces fell together

Seaside Trip pres. to you »the untold stories of the sinking sea!« - this mixture is the eighth story in 2020 and number 130, which is told to us by https://soundcloud.com/y_e_m .

I don't even know when exactly I heard a mix from him for the first time. It must have been 3 or even 4 years ago, it was https://soundcloud.com/ldsroom 's channel and I was impressed by his Shift II mix. I lost sight of him and didn't look for him either - too many fish swim in the ocean and the captain likes to lose his leg or even one or the other artist out of sight. Well, once again I was browsing through LDS's history and heard YEM's mix sets "cruel" and "Timberland" 3 or 2 years ago and was thrilled again. I don't know exactly what it is, but YEM grabs me with the way he sets up the mix sets. Anyway, A lot of water flowed into the sea and it took another 2 years before we got together ... For many is a 4 hours set a lot of time, for others it is a short introduction to their music collection.

YEM's words for you:
I'm just a man who likes listening and collecting music in his mixes.
This time i went back in to the tunes of past few years and compilated a set of  those that are still Music to my ears. Suspect that this type of flow was considered to be called "Deep". So let us try to dive back and reminisce how it sounded. Most of the tracks should be recognizable, but since it turned out that I was the person who pressed the buttons and twisted the knobs while recording, some stylistic interference may be noticed. Hope somebody will find this journey interesting. But that's really not important as much as people's health and peaceful living around our planet.

In these cold days we want to remember that not only tropic species like sloths are endangered! Like our sloths the ice bear is a keystone species and need pack ice such as sloths need the rainforest! It is very important to protect especially those keystone species for maintaining healthy ecosystems. Ecosystems are  our livelihoods, too. We can't disconnect!
