(Story continued from Witchtape #123)

After landing on a windy beach in Friesland, the little witch was welcomed by 2 other witches : a young ‘Tsjoenster’ (a local Frisian witch)  and a 1000-year old Mexican witch who was the last survivor of the ancient tribe of Toltec witches, and who had just woken up from a 500 year long hibernation.  The Tsjoenster explained that they were going to the island of Ameland to participate in a yoni circle ceremony (which would be a first for the little witch). But there is a special rule: while veteran witches can fly to the island, the newbies have to walk.
The Wadden Sea is no ordinary sea, as it is very shallow and during low tide it is possible to walk from the mainland to the nearby islands.  The fact that it’s possible doesn’t mean it’s easy, but the dauntless witches slipped enthusiastically out of their white dresses and ran into the sea.  But after a few minutes, Hekske – while plodding  through the sticky mud - realized that the going was tougher than expected.  Luckily, the Tsjoenster knew the passage through this endless labyrinth of gullies and shoals.  Yet, it was still a long and grueling slog, and they had to hurry because they needed to reach the other side before the tide would come in again.  The closer they got to the island, the tougher it became and the 3 witches had to help each other through a series of increasingly deep gullies.  And strangely, while Hekske got more and more tired, the 1000 year-old Toltec witch seemed to become stronger and friskier.  But then, while they could see the Island at only half a mile’s distance, they had to cross a gully which was by far the widest and deepest they had encountered.  The Tsjoenster was unable to find the shallow ford across the gully (which is constantly shifting its position).  After one hour of trying, things started to look desperate as the tide was coming up again.  Then the little witch smelled something unusual… it was a delicate mix of honey and lime.  The 2 other witches smelled the same and decided to walk into the direction of this scent.  Meanwhile the wind had become stronger while the waves got higher and higher.  The 3 witches got swept off their feet by the strong undercurrent and drifted away, while holding hands firmly.  If one witch would lose her grip, she would surely be swept away and never be seen again.  The water was wild and murky, but whenever the little witch was able to take a breath, she smelled the scent of honey and lime, and it became stronger and stronger.  This gave new courage to the 3 women and after a long struggle, they finally felt firm ground under their feet.  The current was still strong and the 3 witches still had to hold their hands to avoid being sucked back into the restless sea.  Strangely, it was the 1000-year old Toltec witch who was the strongest and she was pulling the other witches towards the island.  Finally, they arrived at the beach where they finally had time to look at each other.  They immediately started to laugh when they realized that they were all covered in mud from top to toe and their long hair was a salty mess.   At the beach, 8 witches were waiting for their new guests and offered a refreshing shower to their muddy and smelly guests, including a natural shampoo made of glasswort.  While scrubbing off the mud, the little witch was dumbfounded when she saw that the 1000-year old witch was completely rejuvenated.  Actually, she looked barely 14 years old now.  The Toltec witch couldn’t believe it either and she couldn’t stop touching her own smooth skin and silky soft hair.  And most of all, she was very happy to feel that her old and aching frame had transformed into a youthful body.  After a 500 year slumber, she was now ready to face the next 500 years …

• What are your musical influences? What is your musical background?

I dont "come" from a musical background, in my child hood music wasn't a very present aspect in my life and now it is what I dedicate my moments to. Sound is what interests me, the daily life sound, the sounds that hold invitations to deepen your moments, the sounds that make my inner and outer world move with curiosity, sounds for the deep listener. 

Opening Traktor for the first time in 2019 when in hospital with help from a dear beloved, I was made aware on such a deep level the ability of healing which comes from outworldy expresion through sound. From that point on the rabbit hole of wonder continues.

 

• What makes good "afterhour"?

A good afterhour for me are the moments of deep surrender, filled with Gratitude for the present. Being surrounded by and experiencing it with loving beings in softness, cheekiness and love. Lets pour some tea and listen to some melting ambient together, or lay in the sun listening to the wind in the trees, lets laugh and celebrate eachother. 

 • Do you have any thoughts you would like to share about your set?

I had the impulse to play the same track at the start and at the end, to hold the journey with the message of Love. This for me, is what I wish to convey in all my musical journeys. 

 
• What was your experience of the set you recorded?

Beate Uwe is one of my beloved home bases, so playing here is always a heart expansion. Watching the bodies flowing and moving on all different levels was and is such a joy, I was in awe at the beauty of it all. It is such an honour to play for you and to share this experience together. The last track moment has imprinted on me, an invitation into stillness it was beautiful to witness the embraces of self and others.
