Witchtape #158 | Guest Witch : LowLow

While Hekske (the little witch) and Falke (the 10 year-old witch apprentice) were watching the glorious near-full moon rise over the Southeastern horizon, it dawned to them that the last supercoven was exactly 12 moons ago. Witch covens happen every full moon and it’s always a small get together of 3 witches, but once every 12 moons, all witches of Europe converge on the island of Blåkulla in the Baltic Sea. The next morning the girls quickly came into a flying mood and (after kissing goodbye to Lalita the tree nymph) they took off from a clearing in the witches’ forest. They flew in Northeastern direction over the vast forests of Småland which were glowing in vivid autumn colors. After a while they saw the coastline of Öland, which they followed in northern direction. Hekske’s heart skipped a beat when she saw the mythical island of Blåkulla in the distance. 
The girls touched down near the highest point of the island, where they were being greeted by a group of witches.  Especially Falke got countless hugs and kisses from the elated witches, as it’s always a great event when a new witch attends the supercoven for the first time. The last witches arrived around dusk and the eldest witch (who is already 742 years old) counted exactly 158 witches, which was the highest number of participants ever. It showed once again that the population of witches is steadily recovering after only a few dozens of witches survived between the 17th century and the start of the third millenium. 
The elder witches were overjoyed when they realized that there were no less than 5 new witches participating to this year’s ceremonies : a teenage witch from Karelia and another one from the lush green valley of the Oskil River, while a Hebrew and an Arab teen had flown together all the way from the slopes of Mount Hermon. And at age 10, Falke was easily the youngest of the 5 new witches, and actually the youngest witch who had made it to Blåkulla since the 14th century. The new witches of the 21st century are apparently exceptionally precocious. 
According to the tradition, the novice witches first have to pass a few initiation rituals before being allowed into the circle of witches.  Fastridh, the eldest witch, showed the way to the Trolleborg labyrinth. The challenge was obvious : the young witches had to find their way through this confusing maze of stones. And to make the challenge even more impossible, the girls were blindfolded. All the senior witches were observing the youngest generation while they cautiously tried to get out of the labyrinth. And they were dumbfounded when they saw Falke walk around with confident strides, managing to find the way out in just a matter of minutes. The other teenage witches were struggling a bit at first, but finally they all made it to the exit, and the Hebrew and Arab witch did so while holding hands all the time, like true bwff (best witch friends forever) …

After staying for over a week in the ancestral village of Ishola (Hekske’s lover) on the misty slopes of the Ruwenzori Mountains, the witches kissed goodbye to their friendly hosts and continued their flight southwards, following their inner compass. Hekske (the little witch) and Falke (the 10-year old witch apprentice) flew over a wide variety of breathtaking landscapes, like the Okavango delta and the thundering Victoria Falls (Mosi-oa-Tunya). 
While following the Limpopo River, they saw a breathtaking sunset unfold in the west… it was high time to land and find a safe place to spend the night. The witches saw no humans which meant the place was safe. They landed at the foot of a majestic tree, but didn’t have much time to savor the glorious sunset, as a few hungry lions were stealthily approaching them, observing the witches in their long white dresses from close quarter, preparing for a decisive lethal strike. But while looking at the witches, a feeling of tenderness took hold of the lionesses. Instead of attacking, they walked slowly into the direction of the girls, who started to talk with a soft voice to the queens of the jungle. This drew the attention of even more lions and soon they were all lying at the feet of the witches, and Falke played and frolicked with a bunch of lion cubs - who especially loved to play with the girl’s long blond hair (the hair of a young witch is of an indescribable softness). The leader of the pride welcomed the young witches and ordered the other animals to prepare a soft bed of grass for the exhausted girls. And soon the Flemish witches drifted into a blissful sleep in the middle of a circle of lions, whom had never ever experienced a similarly peaceful presence in the plains. 
After a deep, blissful sleep, the witches woke up just before sunrise. Falke quickly realized that the little fluffy thing she was holding tenderly in her arms, was actually a lion cub and when looking around, she saw a lioness watching the two of them with endearment … clearly the cub’s mom. Slowly it dawned to the girl that she had been sleeping in the middle of a circle of lions … easily the best possible protection in the African plains. Despite being far away from her home forest in North-Western Europe, the little witches felt absolutely at ease. They looked around and saw all these wonderful animals roaming on the plains : zebras, antelopes, giraffes and even a herd of elephants in the distance.
A bateleur eagle had spotted the witches and touched down in front of their feet. The girls understood that the bird wanted to take them somewhere and they kissed goodbye to their friends of the lion pride. The eagle flew straight to a nearby forest, and touched down in a clearing where a group of women were waiting for them. These were local witches, but they looked very different from European witches. They were all wearing colorful long clothes. The witches themselves had all kinds of skin colors, ranging from black, brown to white. When Falke said something in Flemish to Hekske, the local witches smiled and started to talk to them in the local Afrikaans language. Hekske and Falke couldn’t believe their ears … this language sounded just like Flemish, but with a more expressive intonation and some funny expressions. They never expected that witches from this part of the world would speak the same language as them. After the welcome hug, the African witches gave an energetic welcome dance, which they would soon teach to their European guests. This place had such a beautiful energy …

Hekske (the little witch) and Falke (the 10-year old witch apprentice) finally arrived in Iceland, after a long, windy and icy flight over the North Atlantic Ocean. Falke sensed that her beloved dragons were nearby and she flew straight to them by simply following her inner compass. She found them hidden in the rugged Fjaðrárgljúfur gorge. When the dragons saw Falke, they instantly got into an ebullient mood and greeted their mistress with great affection. This thunder of dragons used to be the group of Sigríður, the dragon tamer who sadly passed away 9 years ago, after being a dragon master since the days of Snorri Sturluson, some 800 years ago. After the passing of Sigríður, the mourning dragons had become listless and not a single dragon egg had hatched during all these years. But last year they encountered Falke and immediately they recognized her as their new master. The dragons instantly became lively again, and a few weeks ago, a little miracle had happened as 3 dragon eggs had hatched, giving birth to the first newborn dragons of the Falke era. The proud mums showed off their little dragonettes to Falke, whose heart filled with joy when she realized the first baby dragon was a gronckle. She kissed and caressed the little creature, and fed him with a few volcanic rocks, which he devoured with great appetite. The second little dragon was a snafflefang, and Falke showered him with hugs and kisses. The third baby was no less than a Hobblegrunt, who are known to change color according to their mood. At first she was purple (which means ‘curious’), but after a few tender kisses from Falke, her scubs turned yellow (which means ‘happy’). The hobblegrunt mom was overjoyed, as this was the very first time her baby had shown this color.
After this welcoming ceremony, Falke changed her immaculately white dress for the black leather attire, which can only be worn by a dragon tamer. The dragons led the way to a natural pond in the middle of the gorge, which was being fed with the ice-cold but crystal clear water of the Fjaðrá river. Without hesitation, Falke waded into the pure water holding a baby dragon. All dragons looked in awe at this spectacle. This was exactly the same ritual which Sigríður did for all newborn dragons. But Falke had never seen and even never heard of this ceremony. Yet she knew exactly what to do, and gave an impressive ‘dragon baptism’ to the three little ones. The hobblegrunt even turned pink during her baptism (which means ‘overjoyed’), during which a bright rainbow appeared between the two vertical walls of the gorge.
As no babies had been born and no baptism ceremonies had been held for 9 years, this day felt as a new beginning for the whole thunder of dragons…
