That day, Hekske (the little witch) got a rude awakening well before dawn when a snow flake landed straight on her face, while the wind was howling through the dark forest.  Falke (the 10 year-old witch apprentice) had snuggled close to her under the moss blanket to keep warm and dry.  It was already mid-February, but there was still no end in sight to the harsh winter weather. The outdoors life of a witch is full of beautiful and rewarding moments, but on mornings like these, even the toughest witch can sometimes be yearning for a warmer and drier place.
A little later, both girls were sipping from a warm cup of herbal tea, still huddling under a moss blanket. Their morning mood brightened up considerably when Falke saw a snow drop shoot peeking out of the snow. Like every year, they consider this as the first sign of the awakening of spring, and the start of the new year in the enchanted forest. Hekske told Bob the eagle-owl to spread the news to all the forest animals. This would be a day full of mystic new year rituals!
And to make things complete, they saw Quintine flying over their heads and make a gentle touchdown next to them. Also in her forest in Ellezelles, the first snow drops were shooting out of the ground. They decided to celebrate the new year together and it would be a very special one for Quintine, who had woken up a few months ago from a 414 year hibernation (see Witchtape #181 for that story).
At noon, all the animals of the forest assembled around the clearing and listened to the witches singing their new year’s songs with a sweet voice. And after passing through all the classic witch’s songs, Quintine taught a long-forgotten song to Hekske and Falke.
Meanwhile, the sun had started to shine while all the snow had melted. The witches felt courageous enough for the next New Year’s tradition : a dip in the nymph’s pond. The witches slipped out of their immaculately white dresses and cautiously waded into the frigid water, before diving head-first into the water. This pond is very special, as the water looks murky from above, but crystal clear from below, with the surface acting as a mirror. Then Falke noticed something strange about Quintine. Instead of 439 years, she suddenly looked very young and vivacious. Quintine looked into the mirror and saw it herself. Her heart skipped a beat when she noticed she looked exactly the same as in the year 1610, before she started her 414-year long hibernation. She touched her skin and felt it was soft and smooth again. When the witches came out of the water, the forest animals couldn’t believe their eyes. It took them quite a while before they realized this young witch was actually Quintine. Once they realized, a wave of excitement went through the whole forest. This was truly a miracle. All forest dwellers were delighted to see that Quintine could pick up the thread of her life from where she had left it 4 centuries ago.
And after the initial amazement abated a little, the witches proceeded with their mystic ceremonies, which would last until the middle of the night. A night full of magic …

After a long and epic flight over the Caribbean Sea, the 3 European witches touched down near an idyllic waterfall in the middle of a lush green rainforest. They were immediately spellbound by the myriad of unknown song birds, like the yigüirro and the quetzal. This place felt like a true garden of Eden.
Hekske (the little witch) and Falke (the young witch apprentice) immediately took a dive in the crystal clear water of the pond, while Quintine took her time to observe the exotic plants and birds around the pond, and she was especially fascinated by the glasswing butterflies. She had never seen anything like this. After this, she slipped out of her immaculately white dress and joined her friends in the cool water of the pond. For the first time in 415 years, she felt completely relaxed (actually, she had just woken up from a 414 year hibernation to escape the persecutions of the 17th century). Gradually, the witches became so immersed in the lush & lazy vibe of this tropical forest, that they lost their sense of space and time.
It was already late in the afternoon when they got out of the water, dried their hair and went for a walk in the forest where they found a wooden cabin. They were greeted by a smiling shaman and his 8 apprentices. He explained he’s a jaguar shaman and it appeared that a prowl of jaguars was actually staying on and off near the cabin. The witches sensed that this place was full of energy. The shaman took his time to explain all the secrets of the forest while preparing a healing potion. After sipping from the potion, the shaman apprentices prepared some ink and drew several mysterious symbols on the skin of the witches. Strangely, this filled the girls with a subtle mix of contrasting energies.
The mystic ceremonies lasted until dusk time, when Hekske and Falke suddenly felt very tired from the long flight and drifted away in a blissful sleep.
Quintine on the other hand, felt very energized and she spent the whole night in the charismatic company of the shaman. He showed her the way through the 12 realms of consciousness. It was a night which seemed to last several weeks… under the bright moon and stars

Just before sunset, the 3 witches (Hekske, Falke and Quintine) touched down on the gentle slopes of Gugu Peak, the enigmatic mountain in the Godeanu ridge which mysteriously disappears every now and then. A group of Carpathian witches welcomed them with warm hugs and delicious papanasi. The local witches couldn’t stop cuddling and kissing Falke (who is only 10 years old, which is unusually young for a witch apprentice). The witches in this part of the world are exceptionally warm and hospitable. They went to a crystal-clear mirror lake, where they lit up a bonfire. That was the start of a long night filled with mystic ceremonies and age-old Carpathian songs.
The next morning it was time to say goodbye. One of the witches invited their 3 Flemish guests to her place near the Black Sea. The girls lifted off and flew from the Carpathians to the plain of the mighty Danube river, which they followed downstream until they saw the Black Sea in the distance.
They touched down on the beach, where an old witch was waiting for them. She introduced herself as Ileana, and she gave a warm welcome hug to Hekske and sweet little Falke. But then she appeared a bit stunned when she was looking at Quintine, and enthusiastically asked whether she was the greatgranddaughter of Quintine from Ellezelles, a witch she had met over 400 years ago. 
Quintine’s heart skipped a beat when she heard that. Now she recognized Ileana, who had changed a lot in the course of 4 centuries. She explained that she was Quintine herself, and that she had just woken up from a 414 year hibernation to escape the persecutions of the 17th century (see Witchtape #181 for the whole story). As a result, she hadn’t aged a single day since the year 1610.
The witches spent a lovely lazy day at the beach until it started to get dark. Then they slipped out of their long white dresses and waded into the water. To their great surprise, the water was emitting a mesmerizing blueish glow which lit up with each wave. Ileana explained that this glow is being emitted by tiny organisms named Noctiluca scintillans, which most people call ‘sea sparkles’. And she smilingly added : ‘and some people call them witch’s veil’.
Soon they were swimming far away from the shore, surrounded by these mysterious lights, which seemed to pulsate with each wave. It felt as if they were flying through a universe filled with pulsing stars. And even more mystifying, the little lights seemed to react to the witch’s presence and flock around them. This mesmerizing spectacle soon made the witches lose their sense of space and time, and they kept on swimming in this magic world until deep in the night …
