ABOUT Ramona Wouters: 

Half Belgian and half Dutch, Ramona spent her youth bouncing between Antwerp and Amsterdam throughout the early 90s. Growing up on Belgian techno and the Dutch love of house music instilled in her an early appreciation for contrast and balance between these two genres of music.

Ramona’s sound weaves together a tapestry of melodies, textures and beats, always conscious of the energy of her audience. This sensitivity stems from her love of dancing, and results in an emotive, sensual style that exudes a rich array of feeling. It is her way of getting back to and giving back to that vital place we all go when the music feels right.

A brief history of witches…
In the middle ages, witches were abundant all over Europe, living quietly in harmony with nature deep in the vast forests, where they avoided contact with humans.  After that, the troubles started as the population of humans soared during the 13th century and they destroyed more and more forests to create farmland.  This led to conflicts with the witches who defended their natural habitat.  On top of that, some witches strayed away from their original values and started to engage in black magic.  So the superstitious humans started to eradicate the witches and by the early 17th century, there were no witches left in Europe.
Or that’s what everybody thought.  There was actually one small colony of witches which survived deep in the woods of Finland without being noticed by humans.  The witches decided to abandon black magic and decided to return to their pure core values and use their immense knowledge of plants and animals to protect the forest.  At first, the colony counted only a few dozens of witches but every now and then they lured a lucky wizard into their realm and slowly the number of witches increased.  The occasional visits of wizards were also useful to stay informed of the state of the planet.  The witches became increasingly worried about the deteriorating situation of the forests, while there were also hopeful signs that the mentality of humans was starting to change into the right direction, so by the early 21st century, the witches decided that it was safe enough to start reclaiming the forests, first in Finland itself, before crossing the Baltic Sea and spreading into Poland and the North of Germany.  After that, wave after wave of witches left the Finnish woods to settle in an increasing number of forests all over Europe, where they now play a discrete, yet vital role in the regeneration process of the fragile forest ecosystems…

Die Kuckucksuhr 

Jeden zweiten Sonntag besuchten wir meine Großeltern. Sie lebten ungefähr zwei Autostunden von uns entfernt, auf einem kleinen Bauernhof, im Saarland. Meine Oma war eine ausgezeichnete Köchin und mein Opa ein begnadeter Geschichtenerzähler. Während meine älteren Geschwister sich meistens umgehend ins Spielzimmer verzogen, setzte ich mich liebend gern in die Küche. Dort lauschte ich den Erzählungen meines Großvaters, den blubbernden Töpfen für das Mittagessen und dem regelmäßigen Ticken der alten Kuckucksuhr. Opa gab oft Geschichten aus seiner Jugend zum besten. Er berichtete von seinem strengen Klassenlehrer Herrn Kaufmann, von seinen etwas übergewichtigen besten Freund Uwe, besonders gern erzählte er jedoch, wie er meine Oma kennenlernte.
Die beiden traffen sich das erste Mal beim traditionellen Tanzkurs. Anfangs schenkte sie ihm kaum Beachtung und hatte nur Augen für den Mädchenschwarm schlecht hin, den gut aussehenden Sohn des Bürgermeisters. Mein Großvater war eher ein Durchschnittstyp. Weder besonders groß noch muskulös. Doch er hatte andere Qualitäten, er war wohl ein klassischer Romantiker. Er schrieb viele Liebesbriefe und war Stammkunde im örtlichen Blumenladen. Am Abschlussball forderte er sie dann zum Tanz auf und sie willigte ein. Nach diesem Abend war der Bürgermeister Sohn vergessen und meine Großeltern ein Paar. 
Heute denke ich noch gern an diese Geschichte zurück, mittlerweile sind meine Großeltern verstorben und ich habe eine eigene kleine Familie gegründet. Die Kuckucksuhr meiner Großeltern steht nun in meiner Küche und wenn zur vollen Stunde der kleine Vögel sein Haus verlässt, wird mir ganz warm ums Herz und ein Lächeln breitet sich auf meinem Gesicht aus.
Leicht melancholisch und zart wie eine Harfe, dass ist Podcast 086 von Fruiterama.

I did the final music selection for this podcast in Madrid, while visiting the family. A historic snowstorm (that trapped me there longer than expected), turned suddenly everything into a strangely beautiful and fragile chaos....Somehow that experience had an impact on my music selection for this mix.
