These two tracks are the first taster of my second album. An old fashioned concept album, The Awakening. It follows a journey of self discovery, curiosity and courage. And the tracks I am sharing first are Who Do You Wanna Be and So Lost which are adjacent tracks on the album.
I have put my heart and soul into this, my second album. Building upon the popularity of the style of one of the tracks on my debut album, Maids of the Mer, this album uses mostly wordless vocal samples and almost classical influences with minimal percussion and lots of harmonies. It is not a pop record. Or a rock record. I suppose it is more spiritual than anything else.
So what’s ‘the story’?
Journeys of self discovery often happen without warning. We might suddenly feel like square pegs in round holes or gradually lose sight of who we are. Sometimes a crisis in another aspect of our life can force us to take a long hard look within.
Our reactions might change, or we might notice changes regarding our beliefs, our roles, our work or our sense of self at a deep level. There might be a sense of disquiet. Or sadness. Or feeling low with no real reason that we can put our finger on.
You may have experienced it yourself, or know someone who has. Watched a film or read a book which touches on it.
A process of awakening or self discovery can happen more than once in a lifetime. A time where we question our self identity and seek greater alignment with our true selves.
We cannot remain static. Inevitably our roles change, as people, whether as children or adults, parents, lovers or friends, what’s expected of us changes throughout our lives. Change can be frightening and it’s possible that others in our life may not support or may even actively discourage the changes we feel are necessary to live more contentedly. In the end we may feel we wear masks all the time and can lose sense of what is actually important to us and indeed, WHO we are, our sense of self.
We may feel deep dislocation with our gender or the stereotypes that are foisted upon us. We may be bewildered by adulting and coping on our own. We may feel torn between what we want to do day to day versus what we need to do, to pay the bills. We may feel that the career we picked twenty years earlier no longer serves us. Our values might have changed and our needs might be almost unrecognisable from our teenage self.
Overwhelm and anxiety can surface out of the blue and eradicate feelings of joy. Jabs of low self worth and waves of despair can arise when we are not feeling that we are living authentically.

A feeling of disquiet and disorientation can be the first sign. A dis-ease when contemplating the day to day aspects of our life. This album takes us through the various stages as I see them. There is no right and wrong.
This is my personal interpretation. We are all on a journey and I hope that, if you need it, that this album offers some peace and escape from ‘the real world’. A retreat if you will?
I have attempted to represent the feelings of being lost and uncertain, needing some people to support you while also rejecting others, the question of who you want to be, now, and how you want to present yourself in the world. The album then takes us through contemplation and reflection. Being honest with ourselves is often a tricky stage.
When we reappear from our ‘retreat’ inwards, it is not plain sailing that’s for sure but there may be glimpses of ‘finding your tribe’ and communing with others. Feelings of liberation and joy can appear unexpectedly and as we learn to trust these new sensations, they will more frequently replace the unwelcome feelings.

How To Fly combines poetry, pastoral vibes and eclectic beats. It features the specially written prose and dulcet tones of poet/broadcaster/presenter of Ian McMillan, presenter of BBC Radio 3's The Verb. (lyrics below)
Ian's distinctive, warm, Yorkshire burr provides the perfect vehicle for his evocative prose. A mellow tone pervades, set off by evocative strings and keys plus a plethora of found sounds. I've spent many a frosty morning recording local found sounds to bring the message in the track to life, the church bells from my village, blackbirds, robins, chaffinches, geese and lambs.

When I was asked 'what bird's THAT?' when the track started I realised that it's not common knowledge that most birds have at least two 'sounds'. Their 'song' and their warning call and sometimes another sound as well. Blackbirds are often heard but perhaps we don't link all their three sounds to the same bird. In addition to the 'song' which is pretty familiar, there's the 'pinking' sound as I call it, which can go on for quite some time, often in the evening or morning when there's no one else around, so you can hear it clearly. Then there's the call they make as they fly off alarmed, which is quite involved, with a tuneful squark over a few seconds, creating an arc of sound in the sky. The beginning of this track captures two blackbirds having an altercation. 

This track caused me a lot of problems. I created the tune for the blackbird first, like I did with the Thrush. However, I just couldn’t get any musical accompaniment to work. And then it dawned on me (ha!!), I was trying it in the wrong key and it’s actually A minor not A Major. (60bpm)

Once I had made that adjustment, it fell into place. I feel this track is the one of the most lively ‘dance’ type tracks and love the variety it adds to the track listing and the whole overall experience of the album.

I know people say that the album is dead. And that no one has got time to listen to a whole album of music. So I had to think long and hard about whether to leave some of these tracks out and have it as an EP. Then I thought, is the album dead? Does anyone listen to them? Well, I do. I love listening to my records in particular. Really immersing myself in the experience. Being present in the moment, doing nothing else. Just listening. It’s something we don’t do much of these days. So many demands on our time. So if you are listening to this album for the first time, all the way through, in the order I’ve curated for you, thank you.

Blackbird Has Spoken

Wow! thrilled to have made Tom Robinson's BBC 6 Music show and Fresh Faves 14.2.22!! This is from my 2nd album The Awakening. Made using loops/samples with love, by Helen Meissner.
How often do we ask ourselves ‘who do we want to be?’ It’s something that gets asked a lot of us when we’re younger isn’t it? But with a twist, everyone wants to know WHAT we want to be.
As an adult, after years of conditioning, we might need to go back to that question, and look behind the masks. It’s difficult because for many we have become the persona we felt society demanded of us. So in a way it’s clean slate time, time to ‘play’ in a way. To really fantasise. And it’s not easy. We’re conditioned to conform and fit into society, seamlessly and obediently.

New roles emerge and old roles change throughout our life. Masks are worn. Pretty much all the time. What’s appropriate in one setting most certainly is not in another. We often learn the hard way. And it’s sometimes toe curlingly embarrassing. And we struggle to forgive ourselves. It’s a real problem. It stops us getting out of the boxes we’ve allowed ourselves to be put in. And gradually saps our energy and joy til we might feel like a 2D version of ourselves.
Am I being too dramatic here? Sorry if this does not resonate. I know it will for a number of people reading. Our fear of doing something which is ‘wrong’ or which makes people think we are a loser, or which makes people talk about us in a way we feel to be disrespectful or unkind is palpable. Which is a million times worse if we find we actually agree with some of it at some level (or would if we’re being honest with ourselves). Being ‘found out’, being called a fraud, a fake... does that strike fear into the heart of you? Make you feel sick? If so we have to go there.  It’s also sometimes called Imposter Syndrome. What if someone realises that I am actually winging it and making it up as I go along? Join the club!
Perhaps we’ve striven to be the child our parents always wanted? The pupil the teachers were proud of? The friend that never let anyone down? The lover who always excited? The star at work? The parent who loved unconditionally and didn’t ‘fuck their children up’? (thanks for that ironic cross to bear, Philip Larkin). And perhaps we’ve not been 100% successful in those quests?
The reality is we cannot please all the people all of the time. And anyway, how people react really does say more about them than about us. We might have inadvertently touched upon one of their red flags, one of their insecurities about themselves and they then overreact to something that really, is NOT a big deal to other people. Ever noticed this?

Well we all have a choice about how we react to someone else’s behaviour towards us. And I have learnt to, in the most part, notice it, assess it and then move on. 
As we can’t guarantee to please others, we might as well please the most important person in your life. You. And as a bonus, if you are comfortable and accepting of yourself, kind and perhaps loving and tolerant(like you would be to a friend?), you will draw people into your life who recognise those qualities. And do yourself a favour. Others, manipulators or narcissists, will be attracted too as they will see that they can have a very nice life with you, thinking you are a pushover. Please always notice your interchanges and exchanges with them. And as soon as something happens which presents a red flag for you, investigate it, discuss it and act on your instinct if you realise this person is not as good for you as they might have appeared early on. People CAN change and you might be the first person to have pointed this unacceptable behaviour out to them. So give them a chance to redeem if that’s what you both want. But just keep an eye out for your own red flags and don’t ignore them. It’s better to be in a good relationship with yourself than a bad relationship with someone else.

Tom Robinson messaged me!! "Really interesting approach on your new song "Out Of My Hair" in this week's inbox, Helen. That tough, spiky guitar locks right in with the drums & gives the track some real bite. And is that a clavinet in there? Anyway - great direction to be heading in!"

Super exciting to get this feedback. Really pushing my personal comfort zones by actually having my voice on a track! Out of My Hair is coming out as a single on 29th October 2021. And the first that I have sung on myself!!! There's another five tracks on the EP, out Nov 5th, called Rhythm Rising.

This past year has been an absolute voyage of discovery for me and an exploration of my personal creativity and I've been thrilled at the support I've received, especially as I started this in my mid fifties. I have no idea how far I can take this but you can be assured that I will not stop creating and sharing my music with whomever is prepared to do me the honour of listening!

This track will have a rather psychedelic video too, so keep an eye out for that if you like the track.

Out Of My Hair

"So Lost, carry me home, is it ok? Take me there. Look for me in the light."

This track addresses something we’ve probably all experienced to one degree or another, that of ‘being lost’?
But before I discuss that expression I’d like to explain the perhaps perplexing lyric ‘is it ok?’. You might think that I could have picked ‘are you ok?’ here. But actually, I prefer the former as it’s asking for help (carrying me home) and also, the bigger question – is it ok to be lost? I feel it IS ok because it suggests taking time out to consider what we really want out of life rather than being on auto pilot, sleep walking our way through our days and weeks, months and years. I think it’s really easy to assume that questioning is a sign of weakness and being forthright and confident (at least on the outside) is somehow better. But really, we’re kidding ourselves (and hoping others are kidded to!?) and I believe a dose of self analysis and inner investigation is extremely healthy and important for our mental wellbeing.

Realising we’re lost can sometimes happen when, as a result of an event or a reaction that takes us by surprise, we find that we don’t recognise what our life has become, or indeed the person we’ve become. Especially if there’s behaviour we’re not comfortable owning. I’ve also noticed it’s when we realise we have a choice about our life, a decision to make, and not knowing which path to take causes anxiety. Worrying about making the wrong choice can set off a whole chain of emotions and reactions. When we start to analyse our options it can be overwhelming to find, when checking in with ourselves, perhaps for the first time in years (or ever) that we actually don’t recognise the life we’re living right now. The plans or dreams we once had might have been put to one side (rather like the lyrics in that Pogues Christmas track) and life might have ‘got in the way’.

I have also noticed that the feeling of being lost can be caused by one part of us wanting one thing and the other part wanting another. Sometimes referred to as being at a crossroads. We know that if we are brave we will potentially step into that ‘light’ or enlightenment that is promised. Perhaps. But there’s a risk we won’t. Sometimes it’s safer to stay in the dim light, peering at what might be? Wondering, waiting. Perhaps for a sign to appear to guide us at the crossroads. It is sometimes the hardest thing to do, to wait. But if it’s creating an inertia in our life and stopping everything else in it’s tracks then it really can cause a blockage which is going to cause us anxiety, until it’s resolved.
Perhaps the conforming part that likes to follow the expectations of the society/our family/friends/work colleagues in which we find ourselves is wanting to keep you static, and the other (frustrated, desperate) part is pulling us away, the part which is more authentically us? As a result we can be left in a state of limbo where the confusion can cause an inertia and definitely a feeling of dis-ease which might start off in the mind but can develop into physical symptoms.
In addition to all this pressure that we allow society to lay at our feet, we actually change as we get older and what we needed from life at one point will most likely be different ten years hence.
The track also touches on the desire for someone to ‘take me there’ but this is a solo trip and really, your friend needs to see when you arrive in the light at the end of the tunnel. We need to start listening to ourselves and being kind and tolerant about what we hear.
And before we can make a decision about the direction we want to take in order to feel less lost, we need to consider ‘who we want to be’. Which is the title of the track four on the album. Perhaps I will see you there!? I hope so. Welcome to this new track share from my third album Afterlife! 
What happens when we pass? 

Opinions vary of course. As with everything in life. We choose what we want to believe. What resonates with us most. 

The perennial questions, such as what are we here for? is there a bigger picture? do our experiences and our choices on this plane have any consequences beyond this realm? 

what if this is the 'in person' experience for our soul or spirit, which has an existence way beyond our comprehension? 
What if everything we learn on this plane feeds into a greater understanding on another level to aid the greater good?

Let's imagine for a moment that there is something more. 
Something beyond our provable reality. 

Perhaps if we suspend our logical minds, we could imagine that when we pass, that we move to a different realm and perhaps we might find everything alien and uncomfortable? 

We might see images, colours and hear sounds we've not experienced before. 
Welcome to track six on the album, Gloria.

This track is perhaps the most experimental on the album (although I've been told the whole album is other worldly and ethereal). 

For the first minute or so I weave together exclusively, personally recorded performances which I made of my friend Sally Mudge demonstrating her sound bath and healing instruments. (Which I then layered into a sound tapestry or bath). 

The star of the show is Gloria, Sally's huge gong. Hence the rather fitting name of the track. 
Within the album, Gloria helps us express exhaltation and the pure untethered-ness we might experience on entering a different realm. Things can appear all at once to be similar but also completely strange. I hope this track conveys this juxtaposition.

A poppy boppy little number! I actually sing on this one too. Inspired by the reaction to my 'rave' at Neil March's Tomorrow Calling festival I've found myself making this!  Sometimes you just need to create a fun pop track, And this is where I am right now (while being in the midst of finishing a pretty full on album). 
I know I am jumping around genres. Sorry #notsorry! it's just that having started so late in life I feel I just have to make up for lost time and try all sorts of stuff! Release date 21st Oct on all usual streaming platforms.

Been having some fun with more upbeat tracks recently, and adding my vocals which is particularly brave of me! Hope you enjoy On Fire.

On Fire

Imagine waking up and finding yourself in hospital and realising that you have no memory of how you got there or what your life had been like up until that moment.
This was the position that Baldock resident, David Naylor, 52, found himself in when, in 2017, he fell ill with Crohn’s disease, Bacterial Meningitis and Sepsis and after being in a coma for 3 weeks, woke up and had no memory.
He began to piece together aspects of his life, rather like a jigsaw, with help from friends, family and emails written in his former life.
It transpired that (much to his bewilderment) David had been a drummer and singer songwriter. and had made his living running music groups at the world famous, The Priory hospital in Surrey. He had worked there for seven years prior to his injury and his sister had to answer calls and messages from colleagues who were concerned about his sudden ‘disappearance’.
One day in hospital, his mother called and told him that he been in Santa Monica the year before of which he had no recollection. Soon after, he found himself humming a song which had Santa Monica in the chorus. It seemed familiar and as he started to write down the words, he was amazed to realise it was a song he had written.
So, his mother had been right after all!
After almost 3 months in hospital, he went back to his flat in North London but soon realised that city life was not for him anymore, and in the new year moved to the Shephall area of Stevenage.
There, he had significant support from Hertfordshire based charity Building Better Opportunities who introduced him to The Practise Roomz studios where he started playing, and teaching drums again.
Not long after moving to Stevenage, he started a crowd funding campaign to record Santa Monica and another song called Long Time.
“I found it hard at first to ask for contributions, but I had lots of support some of which came from The Stevenage Comet. After reading a message that one of their reporters (Jacob Thorburn) had posted on social media, people I’d never met were so touched by the story that they contributed to the campaign. In the end we had 35 backers from around the UK and even some from America.”
Santa Monica was recorded at Boogie Back studios in North London in 2020 with Toby Baker on keyboards, Kim Murray on guitar, Michael Bailey on bass, Janine Johnson on backing vocals and on drums, Mel Gaynor of Simple Minds.
“Mel was a big influence for me when I started to play drums so, along with these other amazing musicians, it was really special to have him playing on the songs”.
Then Covid hit and everything was put on hold!
He started to make plans to release the song this year but soon became quite anxious about it.
“I started to feel a bit vulnerable and worried about being exposed if I’m honest. I’ve been reassured that it’s a perfectly normal reaction but as I’m not sure what normal is anymore, it’s hard to work it all out.
However, thanks to support from the brain injury charity Headway Hertfordshire, and mentoring supplied by programmes run by Hertfordshire Growth Hub and the University of Hertfordshire, where he was paired with Helen Meissner as a mentor, he now feels ready to share the song.

Let's Go Out Tonight

Experiments in spoken word. 
(ie this is not a pretty song!). 
Although the song thrush song I recorded and arranged as the backing track is pretty. 

The prose started off with me posing myself a question about romantic love and the expectations we're fed growing up. I then quickly warmed to the theme as a result of recent conversations around long term relationships and again, challenging the 'narrative', which progressed to the structure of our society, especially capitalism and control. Just your run of the mill topics then!

I posted the prose on my facebook page and my son suggested I set it to music and perhaps started attending spoken word open mics, based on the reaction to my spontaneous backstories which I added to the first three tracks at a recent gig.

The idea is to explore the themes that this introductory piece introduces and to consider what we can do to deal with these questions, should we start to challenge the narrative and feel, most likely, untethered. Although I sense that a lot of people are feeling somewhat untethered already.

And I suppose the next album I am releasing, Afterlife, also dove tails into this, as what happens to us when we are no longer visible in human form is a topic surrounded by controversy and uncertainty.

What If

Thrilled that Cerys Matthews played this track on her 6 Music show in early May! My first BBC Radio 6 Music spin!
This track seemed a fitting one to open the album with. My first proper foray into recording and including birdsong in my tracks. The song thrush was so vocal in winter, often the only voice in the garden. It’s what gave me the idea for this track. I wondered if it was possible to somehow blend the birdsong around me into more conventional sounds we’re used to from stringed instruments. After all they are clearly making music of their own. Might it work as a hybrid? How would that be possible? I had absolutely no idea. Perfect for recording for this track I felt. So whenever I heard him, off I’d trot to see what I could capture.
Once I felt I had a good enough capture I had to think about things like beats per minute and the key! Birds don’t really conform to a key in the conventional sense. Maybe they took a leaf out of Schoenberg’s ‘atonal’ book? But I did find that certain notes and scales fitted better so for this one I determined C major would work best. Weirdly 'standard'!
The beats per minute was easier in a way. (This is 96 bpm in case you're interested). Birds do tend to sing their call or song with a rhythm with roughly the same space between their phrases.That’s if I use more than a one phrase sample at a time. With this track I created a verse, pre chorus, chorus structure with a middle eight and created the song thrush melody line first. Then I set about seeing what instrumentation best suited the various sections. I had no idea what I was doing.  But I was enjoying the challenge. Once I had finished I needed to get an objective opinion. I decided to approach someone known for their extremely broad taste, as well as being a supporter of ‘experimental’ sounds, Neil March from Trust the Doc. Certainly I had never heard anything like this before but Neil’s reaction was wholly encouraging and he asked if he could play it on the very next Trust The Doc show on Exile FM. He said his listeners would be the best judges of it. Flattered and surprised I agreed. Then waiting for the reaction on the very lively thread was nerve wracking. But they were very kind and actually, more conventional radio shows have also warmed to the track, with Cerys Matthews playing it on BBC 6 Music a particularly sweet vote of confidence.
The Thrush call is so varied that it’s possible to imagine you are listening to lots of different birds! They are great mimics too. All these calls are naturally occurring. I’ve not manipulated or retuned them in any way. The only thing I’ve done is chopped them up so they might not be in the timing they appear in the wild, but it’s ALL the song thrush!

Life is not about who you once were. It is about who you are now and who you have the potential to be.  About having fun. Throwing out the rule book! Thrilled to have been played on BBC radio 3 (Elizabeth Alker Saturday morning show) BBC 6 Music (Cerys Matthews and Tom Robinson, BBC Intro Channel Islands (a remix I did for Michael Donoghue) and featured in Fresh Faves from Fresh on The Net as well as on the super independent shows such as WorldWideFM thanks Nitin Sawhney, Anna Phoebe and Kayla Painter, Tim Willett's New Music Generator, Neil March's Trust The Doc show (who have both invited me to share my music at their events,) Andy Sharman's KYN Show, Amazing Radio, Rich James Electro Show, Chris West's The Tripwire, Slava and Trev's show, Russ Evans Electro show and more, many of whom play me week after week and have me as their opening or outgoing show tracks. I am so grateful. 
A collaboration with THE Jackie Weaver earlier in 2021 resulted in national TV, newspaper and radio coverage, which was huge fun.

I'm creating a range of music, from what could be viewed as classical for a modern era I guess? telling a story through notes rather than words. I also love a beat, prose and some simple phrase work (either my own voice, samples or spoken prose) and I love a bop!  so my genre is not really defined or fixed BUT people say they can tell it's my work. I've also been honoured to be asked to do remixes by a number of artists and these have been going down well.

How did it all start?
A glitch in the matrix meant that Garageband ended up in my lap! (I have since moved to Logic)that's Lockdown for you!! never had any desire to write or produce before but love what's coming out in the mix and hope you do too.  
Supermassive black holes in my production knowledge of course. Happy to be guided by anyone who cares to get in touch!
It's a bit like having a baby without realising you were pregnant! There's plenty more where that came from, from other dance to more chill. The world is my oyster. (Boring bits, based in Herts, legend in my own lunchtime). Wrong side of 50, right side of life, left of centre, off of the strip.
