Originally written for piano and saxophone, this piece has been transcribed for clarinet and saxophone as a new arrangement by Eugene Bozza. Written in 1936, this is one of Bozza's important early compositions.

Jibber and Twitch - The Cardiacs

This solo clarinet work, written for Helen Goldsmith in 2018 by English Composer Peter Byrom-Smith takes us through a journey of the mind.
The fast 5/8 passages demonstrate whirling notes around the composers head, contrasting with more expressive slower sections to create balance in the composition.

As leaves spin in whirlpools
caught in corners.
As stars shoot across velvet skies.
As birds flock
and flurry in great dark clouds.
As sunlight sends burning beams
across shadowy rooms.
As music rattles and hums.
As thoughts fill minds.

Whirlpool

Whirlpool (Peter Byrom-Smith)

Written in 1983, Berio's Lied is a contrast to his previous pieces in the way that he is not concerned with virtuosity. Instead, Berio conveys a cantabile and introspective character of a mournful song with 
the rapid repeated notes suggesting hesitation and disruption.

Composed in 1919 for Werner Reinhart, Stravinsky's three pieces for clarinet solo are one of the most known and popular choices amongst clarinettists within the repertoire.

Movement one is a slow, plodding folk like melody, said to be inspired by the folk tune 'song of the volga boatmen.' The piece is marked 'sempre p e molto tranquillo' meaning always soft and very calm throughout. The lower register of the clarinet is explored in this movement and some of the clarion register. The only surprise for the listener is a sudden forte in the last bar after a wallowing, moody introduction.

Three pieces for solo clarinet (1) Stravinsky

Composed in 1919 for Werner Reinhart, Stravinsky's three pieces for clarinet solo are one of the most known and popular choices amongst clarinettists within the repertoire.

The second movement is written in a free-form style, akin to jazz improvisation, with no time signature or bar lines. This is more technically challenging for the player than the first movement with flurries of quavers at the metrenome mark of 168. The second section is much calmer and reflective before revisiting the sextuplet patterns from earlier.

Composed in 1919 for Werner Reinhart, Stravinsky's three pieces for clarinet solo are one of the most known and popular choices amongst clarinettists within the repertoire.

The 3rd movement is inspired by ragtime and is relentless throughout. There are demands on the player both technically and musically from beginning to end. The clarinettist is directed to play forte all the way through and the fast flowing syncopated rhythm is punctuated by accents throughout causing agitation and excitement.

Three pieces for solo clarinet (3) Stravinsky

Helen is a crossover artist, specializing in contemporary/classical performance and is an active recitalist across Yorkshire and Merseyside.
At the age of 27, Liverpool born Helen has been performing professionally from the age of 17, and trained in Classical Music Performance at Leeds College of Music where she was trained by Colin Honour; Principal Clarinettist at Opera North.
