As I read "Travelogue," the webcomic that inspired this song, I was captured by its startlingly intimate moments--bits of conversations, reflections, and philosophy that feel so familiar, a late-night conversation with friends. I found myself struck by the distinct and persistent sense of emotion woven through its entirety. For a story about leaving a physical home, moving onwards, it is remarkably upbeat!

“Hanging Heavy” was inspired by The Weight After Water (TWAW) by Yan Qin Weng, a story very close to my heart. TWAW’s writing style involves the use of metaphor in three key ways: it’s used with great frequency as part of the text’s style, which bleeds into its function in the story as the very essence of their system of magic, in turn leading into the “curse” leveled against Aucis which becomes the henge for a main theme—the “weight” of Aucis’s guilt. This was very influential to how I wrote this song. I wanted to echo the use of metaphor in my own lyrics, so I played around with it more than I typically do. In the past, while considering the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, I often found myself frustrated by what seemed like a tale of pointless tragedy. The only way for Orpheus to retrieve Eurydice is blind trust--and he will fail. Blind trust is no basis for a relationship. I tried to resolve this through my writing by using the story as a metaphor for a relationship that lacks communication. In “Eurydice in the Light” the speaker, Orpheus, urges Eurydice to make contact; to take the outstretched hand, to “let [her] words walk into the light.”

The webcomic "Todd Allison and the Petunia Violet" has inspired multiple songs of mine, but this is one of my favorites. “Cyril, Dear” is only loosely inspired by the character from TAPV of the same name, but I feel it carries the spirit he possesses. I said, "Should you refuse us sanctuary--should you turn us away, to the sea and those 50 despised marriage beds--we will hang ourselves within every temple Argos has to offer. The wrath of the gods would surely rain upon you, then. So: do not turn us away." And yet--when still they came for us, when still I fell to that place I scrambled and clawed to avoid--I had no choice. I brought the wrath of gods upon myself, instead. 
Such an uproar is easily incurred. They aren't picky, but quick to pick a fight. 
All you need: the man who owns you, and a knife.
