Prepare to melt into your surroundings and float away with a sumptuous slice of piano pop perfection from Australian duo, Imbibe. As indebted to Supertramp as it is to Rex Orange Country, “Time Heals Every Wound” invites you into a blissful sonic world, enveloped in warm melodies and grounded in front man Tennyson Nobel’s existential lyricism, burning with a yearning desire for something more. 

From a backyard in Byron to a bedroom in Berlin, brothers Tennyson and Holden Nobel have spent the past few years mastering their craft. 

Searching for the ever elusive “something more”, the brothers traded the sleepy bungalows of Byron for the bustling cityscape of Berlin in 2018, opening their eyes to the world around them and to themselves. “Time Heals Every Wound” is the culmination of that journey and the start of a new one. The song encapsulates their piano driven off-centre pop sound, showcasing a band with a clear sense of where they are going and how they got there.

Ultimately, “Time Heals Every Wound” is a song of contradictions. A wrestle between the comfort of knowing that peace and healing will come with time, but the discomfort of having to wait for it to appear over the horizon. A tension between Tennyson’s contemplative lyricism and the track’s warm and cosy atmosphere. A relentless earworm disguised as a breezy melody. A song that can be listened to with a smile and sense of hope as the sun flows through your bedroom window as equally as it can be listened to on a lonesome 2am walk with a head full of regret and melancholy. ONE BAND’S MISSION TO MAKE PIANO COOL AGAIN

“Sometimes” is the latest song from Australian duo, Imbibe. Brothers Tennyson and Holden Nobel create a classic pop sound, authentic and thoughtful.

"Sometimes" continues the band's revival of a retro piano pop sound that is revitalised 
and refreshed to place the band amongst their bedroom pop contemporaries. 
Positioned amongst the likes of Rex Orange County and Mac Demarco, Imbibe 
draw from a similar pool of influences but are separated by Tennyson Nobel's piano driven songwriting and the band's organic production.

The brothers have been sharing music together since they were kids, learning 
from their songwriter Dad. It was the start of a mad, musical immersion – Mozart one day, McCartney or Randy Newman the next. With a burning desire for new musical possibilities,  the brothers traded their backyard in  Byron Bay to a bedroom in Berlin in 2018. ‘Sometimes’ shows how far this journey has taken them.

Ultimately, it’s a song about the comfort that comes from accepting that life is full of ups and downs.

“GOTTA GO RODEO”

FOR RELEASE – Friday, 4 September 2020: Hot off the back of their one year debut release anniversary along with three consecutive top five Country singles, Darlinghurst release their new single Gotta Go Rodeo today - a 3 minute 6 second rollicking ride that just begs you to get up and dance. 

Gotta Go Rodeo was co-produced by Pete Dacy and Darlinghurst’s Jason Resch at Secret Sound Studios and mixed by Grammy Award winner Jack Joseph Puig. The acoustic video was also filmed at Secret Sound Studios as part of a fun afternoon early this year. States band member Pagan Newman, “We didn’t realise it at the time but this wonderful afternoon where we filmed our unplugged acoustic set live, was one of the last times we could be together in one room. Together we experienced a taste of the isolation that was to come."

Gotta Go Rodeo was inspired, said band member Cassie Leopold by this crazy place in Moama NSW that Cassie and Pagan would head too on the odd occasion. “Gotta Go Rodeo is essentially about a place owned by friends of Pagan's and mine who throw the most craziest parties. As you enter a sign reads leave your inhibitions at the gate and everyone that enters generally does that. It’s about escaping whatever's bringing you down or holding you back and letting your hair down."

Along with the Australian radio airplay and chart success Darlinghurst have just recently established a beachhead in the US Country market with their debut release So Long So Long entering the Music Row Top 100 radio chart. 

Gotta Go Rodeo tells us that we all need to cut loose from time to time even to the point of "square dancing in a roundhouse” so as to enjoy life’s brief joyous moments with family and friends - more so than ever right now … “So turn it on, turn it up and get dancing!”

'YOU CAN BE SOMEBODY TO LOVE'

As for all artists, 2020 hit Gaspar Sanz hard. Robbed of the ability to perform live, the band delved into introspection and songwriting after the release of Glass Rainbow, an EP that was written before the world knew words like 'social distancing' and live music became a thing of the past.

The band's next single You Could Be Somebody To Love reflects the desire to hold onto the positivity of pre-pandemic times.

“We wanted to have fun with this track and focus on good vibes but also let people know that they have the choice to be the best versions of themselves," says singer James Bell.

"The world has changed so much and very quickly. And the majority of people are experiencing really hard and confusing times. Forced into isolation and fear with the state of the world. It’s human nature to seek control when we’re met by the unknown future to come."

With lyrics like 'Now that you wanted to waste away' and 'You say you're low and you go right back to, You and I have simple minds' the turmoil of emotions are quickly turned to positivity as James sings 'Go and chase all the stars, let it go.You know you can be somebody to love'.

James continues: "The only thing we can actually control is our emotions and the choices we make. Everyone has a choice to find happiness amongst the chaos. To start looking inward for answers to heal so we all can be examples. No one can take away who you are!” 

The restrictions of Covid-19 also created new challenges for songwriting, as the formerly Sydney-based band navigated half of them returning home to Perth in Western Australia to weather the storm.

However, the ability to write cross-country turned out to be a beneficial skillset to have developed when the band engaged legendary producer Jacknife Lee on You Could Be Somebody To Love. The band had worked with Jacknife on previous release On My Mind as a mix engineer, and the producer was so taken by both the band and their music that he offered to produce their next track.

“We had a few demos that we liked and were excited about. And the opportunity to work with producer Jacknife was really exciting for us. He heard the demo for the song and was keen to collaborate," says James. 

"As we were all in different parts of the world at the time it was definitely a different experience creating a song in that way."

The band worked across multiple time-zones and different hemispheres to bring the rough demo into the bouncing feel-good track 
You Could Be Somebody To Love.

"Normally recording a song for us takes a bunch of sweaty people in a room with instruments and equipment," James muses.

"Luckily we had instruments from the demo already done to work with. We re-recorded the drums and then went back and forth with Jack on shaping the song. Working together, the space and the character of the song became the focus."

Multiple studio sessions in Sydney and Perth were organised, as the band virtually discussed the song evolution amongst themselves and with their LA-based producer.

All agreed: "It was definitely a new and different but great way to write for us. We learnt a lot working with Jack and we hope everyone loves the song as much as we do.”

Working with Grammy nominated producer Will Hicks, the band released two singles “Mirage” and “Touchdown” which garnered mainstream critical attention. NME described Imbibe’s debut single “Mirage” as “the year’s best existential jam. A thumping slice of electro-pop” and named Imbibe in 'The NME Top 100 Essential Artists'. 

The plaudits did not stop there, with follow up single “Touchdown” praised by Spindle Magazine as “a breezy pop jam flitting between indie chic and the laconic French cool of the 90’s. It just goes to show that debut single ‘Mirage’ was not a one off for the duo.” The brother’s potential of the European music scene is best highlighted by their placement as the 'New Name Feature' artist on BBC Radio 1 'Future Sounds’ with Annie Mac.
