Joint4nine is Bogota's finest, a beat-making maestro who's all about groove. As a co-founder of Nomada Records, he's been setting Colombia's house music scene on fire, and "That Good Of Love" is just a taste. Dropping just in time for this spring, this three-track EP is not to be missed.

Great music is often about chance meetings and impromptu creative sessions and so it is that Hell Yeah proudly serves up Sensory Blending, a new collaborative album from Italian collective Aura Safari and Finnish musician Jimi Tenor. The nine-track record arrives on 3rd May 2024 and is a lush and luxurious fusion of jazz-funk styles.

This glorious record came about after Tenor was playing a Hell Yeah party at Tangram in Perugia. Aura Safari were local and, in some free time the day before the gig, everyone jumped in the studio together. They had never met before but soon found plenty of free-flowing common ground and the result of that one-off session is now served up on this vibrant new album that brims with musicality, indelible melodies and subtly uplifting vibrations.

Tenor has toured the world and previously collaborated with the likes of Japanese master Calm. He is a psychedelic space-jazz-funk king, skilled musician, composer and producer who, since the mid-nineties, has released more than 25 albums and 45 EPs. Aura Safari is made up of bass, synth, guitar and keys players Lorenzo Francioli, Ruggero Bonucci, Nicola Pitassio Andrea Moretti, Lorenzo Lavoratori, Daniele Melloni and Nicholas Iammatteo, and they are label regulars who served up their sublime Island Dreams album here last year.

Says Jimi, who enjoyed his time in Perugia and adds that "the studio session was 100% efficient. I showed up and we started to play. Almost all that was made was material that we could use for the album. I love to work fast. Quick brushstrokes. Finish! I was amazed at how intuitively the Aura Safari guys could come up with new parts for songs. I mentioned some feeling or approach and they seemed to find it just like that.”

'Bodily Synesthesia' is the seductive opener with steamy sax notes and gentle grooves that are topped by aloof vocal whispers. 'Lunar Wind' is another slow and steamy mix of jazzy keys and soulful vocal hooks, 'Bewitched By The Sea' is a more tropical and percussive number with majestic melodies and 'My Bluebell' picks up the pace with jazz-funk grooves and hustling chords. 'Last Waltz In Perugia' has freeform sax lines soaring over meticulous drums that ebb and flow and 'Gimlet' brings a playful, samba-tinged rhythm and sunny flute leads straight from South America. There's a laidback, carefree mood to 'It's Too Easy To Love You' while 'Your Magic Touch' is a dancey number that exudes melodic joy, and 'Indigo' closes in dramatic fashion with a conversational sax that sticks long in the memory.  

Sensory Blending is a seamless fusion of collaborative minds from Aura Safari and Jimi Tenor and it could well be performed live at some special select shows later in the year.

New single 'colder' by Munich producer Sepalot featuring Berlin-based vocalist and sound designer Temple Haze is a reflection on the duality present in our consciousness or in waking reality- specifically the juxtaposition of the human condition. How we can feel like we are moving forward in our lives and flourishing (...“Walking into the light, create a world where we thrive”...), and then at the next moment feel lost in the haze (...”My darkness has arrived, And you feel like nothing inside, But I get colder”...)? The song celebrates both of these extreme facets of life. To celebrate when we are alone, even feeling cold, as well as when we are thriving and believing in the path forward.

Temple: "The outro vocals are the original first take as it was recorded, I was in a trancelike state and these words and lines just came out. I can remember after recording thinking, “what was that?, wow crazy!” I surprised myself. I was doing a lot of Jungian “shadow work” at the time and it really felt like a reflection of that inner work shining through this recording."

All melody lines and most of the words are actually from this first take itself. Temple’s process is then to deconstruct the improvisational lines and, in a collage style, put the song back together to find what inherent meaning was expressed in the raw moment of improvisation.
Sepalot then would work his producer magic, choosing certain lines for certain parts, collaging the vocals even more and morphing the beat production around the vocals.

Sepalot's musical output can be classified somewhere between "multi-layered" and "schizophrenic", but if you know his musical socialization, everything makes sense again. From skate punk rock, he moved on to soul all-nighters and became a passionate vinyl collector, eventually becoming completely absorbed in the golden era of hip-hop, where sampling and beatmaking became his natural habitat as a producer. He lived out these influences as a musician, DJ and producer, as well as in the form of his live project, the Sepalot Quartet, with whom he plays jazz festivals throughout Europe.

BlackFilter is the project of Pellegrino Mazzucchi, a percussionist, DJ, and producer residing in Modena, Italy.
Pellegrino became passionate about music at an early age, thanks to the influence of his mother, a Fado singer of Indo-Mozambican descent, and his older brother, a DJ of Latin and World music who encouraged him to study Afro-Cuban percussion.
Drums, or "Batuki" (as his mother called them when she was getting mad at him for the continuous rhythm that echoed through the house at all hours of the day), served as Pellegrino's first means of expression. He later expanded his sound palette through experimentation with analog synthesizers and drum machines. The fusion of these elements over time gave birth to the distinctive sound of BlackFilter and "Batuki": a dialogue between Afro-Caribbean rhythms and futuristic Jazz with hints of electro and disco, offering the listener a sonic and refreshing sound experience.
