Hell Yeah's Marco has been busy trawling the internet for new talents during lockdown. The result is a series of digital releases which will be rolling out in the coming months, kicking off with a new EP from Kayroy.

Kayroy is Finnian Langham, an artist from Melbourne, Australia, who in the last 12 months has released on Whiskey Disco and TheBasement, turning plenty of heads with his mature, sampladelic interpretations of funk, disco, house, boogie and soul. He got in touch with the label via email to ask for the vocal version of Giorgia Morandi's 'Children of the Sky'. "I couldn't find it," says Marco, "but after that he sent me a bunch of tracks that make up this EP. To my ears, it is fast, funked-up boogie with heavy Italo disco influences, acid and breakbeat, making it a very fresh selection to my ears."

Opener ‘Imagine’, produced with fellow Melbournite GREETINGS, is a glistening space disco cut with a sense of nostalgia rushing through its retro-future chords. It's filled with positive energy and gorgeous arps. 'Orbitale’ will get your butt wiggling with its sci-fi chord stabs and boogie bass. The whole thing shimmers and shines like a star in the night sky, filling you with warmth. The grown-up disco vibes continue on 'Galapagos' with its mellow acid bass, big stabs and kaleidoscopic arpeggios. The release is topped-off with a remix of ‘Imagine’ from Dawn Again, taking you to an old school chill-out room with its dreamy chords and hazy breakbeats, sinking you deep into a post-rave comedown.

Just over 2 years since Hobie’s debut ‘espresso depresso’ on all my thoughts, the London-based producer returns on another of Seb Wildblood’s imprints, Church. Part-LP, part-beat tape, ‘strugglebus vol.1’ is a deeper foray into Hobie’s analogue sound, dropping on August 21st. Several years in the making, the ‘strugglebus’ series saw shape following the loss of a close friend.

Hobie’s signature blend of warm instrumentation, MPC-dusted samples, and ear for an emotive sound palette, is clear-cut throughout. Distinctive tones, lush keys, field recordings and re-imagined samples make for a multi-layered collection of work that feels raw yet refined at the same time.

Tracks ‘my feet tell me i am crazy my pocket sings a different tune’, ‘j’accuse’, ‘when it all shakes out’ and ‘same’ hold to jazz influence, affecting sleepy melodies and soothing loops. ‘what baby really likes’, ‘who to love and how’, ‘words well worn’ and ‘world got itself in a hurry’ lean into hip-hop roots — sooty instrumentals comprising tranquil notes and slovenly beats.

Hobie’s ‘strugglebus vol.1’ is out on limited cassette and digital platforms on August 21st.

It’s a pleasure to introduce to you ‘Sound Support’, a collaboration born out of Detroit Swindle’s critically acclaimed live act, between Lorenz Rhode and the Swindles own Lars Dales. These guys started making music together a while back and the result is finally here for your listening pleasure.
Dutch super duo DS have been flying since 2011, going from strength to strength. Riding high with releases on their own Heist Recordings as well as AUS, Strut and countless other labels. German keyboard player Lorenz Rhode possesses some exceptional skills on the piano and vocoder and has contributed to hi profiles remixes for the likes of Jamie Lidell, Yelle (Kitsune), Moulline (Gomma), Strip Steve (Boysnoize. This is naming just a few.
As ‘Sound Support’, these two share a love for all things nerdy and programming. Their countless studio sessions have led to a staggering amount of material, this offering finding its way to Oslo wonder boy Prins Thomas and Wordandsound’s Kai Frager’s label Internasjonal. As the label is a platform for retro futurism and house not house, it is a perfect home for this release. ‘Sound Support’ have a definite knack for light-footed, synth-heavy dance music and a love for playful melodies with big breakdowns. They clearly have a lot of fun in the studio as their results reflect their upbeat and playful personalities. Their music contains a sense of freedom, live-feel, and euphoria.
Opener ‘Stab by Stab‘ kicks off with pearly echoed piano, sounding like an 80’s dub, before breaking down into a deep-beat bass journey, slowly climbing higher, bringing it all together in one joyous and melancholic closing. You could easily mistake ‘Europe’ as a blend of Herbie Hancock and Massive Attack, flourished with a guitar-notguitar solo. Finally, the infectious disco beat of ‘Catwalk ‘, its bubbly SH-101 bassline and spacey chords that just keep going, pulling you in further and further and further.
Nordic Wizard Prins Thomas lulls us into his brightly hued utopia of disco-rock and faded early house days, with his take on ‘Europe’. It’s a treat for the feet and the senses, a ‘Diskomiks’ classic that doesn’t disappoint. This EP is the result of two musical talents and like-minded funsters, getting together to bring us some joy through their sounds. This music is much needed right now.
