Continuing the vibe set in motion by number 003, and in a timely shift away from the elevated tempos of the club, Startree slows it down just a bit more for its fourth go-round, raising its sonic ceiling 
and lowering its floor.  The sensuous, broad-minded sound on offer here is the brainchild of one Mr. Eugene Tambourine, a name one can expect to be hearing a lot more from in coming months, given his 
distinct, energetic-yet-calming amalgam of musical delicacies, perfect for these shifting times.

“A Rising Sign“ somehow recalls salsa without using any drums, as it does house music without employing a kick.  Don’t ask how, just let it groove and try to figure out why your ass wants to move despite the absence of almost all of the hallmarks of today’s “dance music”.  All except for the outsize bassline which holds it all down firmly to the floor while playful electric piano chords punctuate and add
blocks of color to a an idyllic soundscape animated by cascading chimes, glockenspiel, bell, synth and zither.  This is a warm, sonic bath you’ll no doubt wish lasted longer.  

“Le Lagon Noir” began for Eugene as an instrumental rendition of Laurie Anderson’s “Blue Lagoon” but is, here, reincarnated in the form of a louche, mystical, serpentine groove which wouldn’t sound out of place at an aquatic rollerdisco.  Its lyrics have been revived, translated into French and voiced by the inimitable Camille Vourzay in her smoldering, dusky spoken tones.  Bright and mysterious synth textures wash the rich, mid-tempo jam in a lunar haze while pattering percussion adds earth to compliment the water.

“Keep my Light” beautifully reframes a lyrical reference to the pop-gospel standard “I’ll Keep my Light in my Window” within a deceptively empty-yet-full bed of softly-rendered drum machine 
programming and shimmering metallic textures.  Its wistful synth work hits that ever-elusive, melancholic 
magic spot between loneliness and abundant love.

Eugene's composition "Love Is On The One (No Rues It's True)" concludes the record, bringing the sentiment back home to where the heart is.  Yevhen Bubon's vocals lead this softly jubilant celebration of a bond between souls.  Using a palette which suggests both Logg and Larry Heard and lyrics which may provoke a tear, this is space-y, groove-laden music for both earthly and cosmic lovers alike.

Startree is delighted to present Eugene’s unique sound to the world as a continuing statement of its musical intentions and its simple desire to inspire and have a good time.

Hungarian musician János Másik remains one of the country's most notable composers and multi-instrumentalists. Operating between the late 70s and early noughties, he charted several LPs, most of which are collaborative works with fellow Hungarian composers and musicians. It's one of his few solo long players, Trance Balance, that's getting its time to shine once more, thanks to London-based label Foam On A Wave.

Released in 1989, a historic year that saw the fall of the Berlin Wall and Round Table Talks in Hungary to establish a new multi-party democracy, the LP is inevitably fuelled by the shifting political landscape at the time.

While there's nods to bands like 23 Skidoo, Talking Heads and The Pop Group across the release's 11 tracks, in its entirety the music is singular and surreal. Taking cues from art rock, folk, jazz, post-punk and avant-garde, Trance Balance sits somewhere between reality and dreamland, awash with ghostly synthesisers, tribalistic rhythms, propulsive percussion and freeform instrumentation.

Today we premiere 'Running', which is arguably the most straight-forward and catchy track on the release. Harmonic vocals chime behind Másik's commanding vocals which call to mind that of David Byrne, while frantic synth melodies and a meandering guitar riff keep the song driving forward.

Birthed at the turn of the ‘80s, synth and wave music has remained a constant force over the last four decades, with a recent spike in interest in the sound offering further proof of its’ timeless, out-of-this-world quality. It’s against this backdrop that Dutch DJ Interstellar Funk presents his celebration of the style, “Artificial Dancers – Waves of Synth”.

A bumper compilation bristling with obscure and hard-to-find gems, the set sees the Artificial Dance label founder joining the dots between synthesizer and drum machine-driven tracks in a variety of subtly different styles. It’s the result of hundreds of hours spent digging through dusty old records, tapes, and the Bandcamp accounts of DIY musicians who have been active since the sound’s first boom in the early 1980s.

The 11-track set draws on tracks made and released at different times over the last 40 years, with the earliest cut committed to tape in 1978 and the most recent in 2018. While the tracks date from the ‘80s, ‘90s, noughties and 2010s, the showcased cuts are united by a primitive but futuristic quality that makes dating them difficult. In many cases, it’s hard to tell which tracks were made in the early 1980s and which were conjured up in 21st century studios.

As you’d expect, highlights are plentiful with a number of the most unknown or sought-after cuts appearing on vinyl for the first time. In this category you’ll find the Human League’s odd but inspired early number “4JG”, a near mythical 1982 live version of Liasons Dangereuses’ “Dias Cortas” (previously only available on a VHS video) and Chris and Cosey’s “Hybrid C”, a brilliant mid-’90s cut plucked from their CD-only album “Skimble Skamble”. You’ll also find a rare demo version of Clan of Xymox’s Dutch darkwave classic “Stranger”, which became a club smash across Europe in 1983.

Interstellar Funk has also chosen to showcase tracks by a range of DIY producers and lesser-known artists. These include Californian band Batang Frisco, who self-released a sole private press album in 1986 (their contribution, “Sewing Machine”, is dedicated to founder member Bill DiMichele, who passed away this year), Matthias Schuster’s Im Namen Des Volkes project – which contributes the previously unreleased 2014 track “Alles Ist Gewinn” – and Zahgurim, a short-lived early ‘80s act who reunited in 2018 to record their first new material since 1983.

If that wasn’t enough to set pulses racing, the compilation also showcases a solo track by sadly departed Psyche member Stephen Huss. Nobody is quite sure when Huss recorded “Infinity Sign”, but we can confirm this is the first time that one of his solo productions has ever appeared on vinyl.

Artificial Dancers: Waves of Synth will be released on the 31st of march as a gatefolded double LP and on all the digital platforms.

Hell Yeah's Marco has been busy trawling the internet for new talents during lockdown. The result is a series of digital releases which will be rolling out in the coming months, kicking off with a new EP from Kayroy.

Kayroy is Finnian Langham, an artist from Melbourne, Australia, who in the last 12 months has released on Whiskey Disco and TheBasement, turning plenty of heads with his mature, sampladelic interpretations of funk, disco, house, boogie and soul. He got in touch with the label via email to ask for the vocal version of Giorgia Morandi's 'Children of the Sky'. "I couldn't find it," says Marco, "but after that he sent me a bunch of tracks that make up this EP. To my ears, it is fast, funked-up boogie with heavy Italo disco influences, acid and breakbeat, making it a very fresh selection to my ears."

Opener ‘Imagine’, produced with fellow Melbournite GREETINGS, is a glistening space disco cut with a sense of nostalgia rushing through its retro-future chords. It's filled with positive energy and gorgeous arps. 'Orbitale’ will get your butt wiggling with its sci-fi chord stabs and boogie bass. The whole thing shimmers and shines like a star in the night sky, filling you with warmth. The grown-up disco vibes continue on 'Galapagos' with its mellow acid bass, big stabs and kaleidoscopic arpeggios. The release is topped-off with a remix of ‘Imagine’ from Dawn Again, taking you to an old school chill-out room with its dreamy chords and hazy breakbeats, sinking you deep into a post-rave comedown.

To kick things off we are lucky enough to present you with one of the very best labels in present times, not only one of the best in London, or the UK, or even Europe, but a record label that is truly world class: Rhythm Section !!!

This brainchild of Bradley Zero, is an ever-growing creative collective of like minded music lovers who have been throwing parities in Peckham since 2009. Their expansion from a grassroots party in London to a world renowned brand of record labels, radio shows, and studio spaces has been a phenomenal spectacle for those with their fingers on the pulse.
And, it was the birth of Rhythm Section International in 2014 that truly consolidated their name among the greats: now boasting a whole host of releases from the scenes most respected artists and local talents alike : Al Dobson Jr., Henry Wu, Chaos In The CBD, FYI Chris, Earth Trax, and many many more… including some of our own esteemed guests - Hidden Spheres, Duke Hugh, and Rüf Dug.

Our host, Z-Lovecraft (AKA Mali),  is a resident and vital member of the Rhythm Section family. So what better way to begin this amazing Rhythm Section mixtape than with his very own edit of a past Bside Guest's (Rüf Dug) amazing track ‘Sunrise’ under his Mali-I alias. From there on in it is a mesmerising exploration of the labels Bsides - Sweet soothing vocals from 30/70, smooth jazzy vibes courtesy of Pinty, dipping into the deep with Bad Channel and Alexander Falk on their sub label International Black. A dubstep track from Prequel, some tasty breaks from Mallard, before bringing it back to Earth Rain with Saul. This one has it all!
