Helena Cánovas i Parés ist Komponistin und studierte am Conservatorio Superior de Música de Aragón (Saragossa) und an der Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln, wo sie zur Zeit den Master elektronische Komposition bei Prof. Michael Beil absolviert. Ihre Musik wurde durch die Begegnung mit Komponisten wie Beat Furrer, Chaya Czernowin, Tristan Murail, Sofia Gubaidulina, Ivan Fedele oder Alberto Posadas bereichert. Neben internationalen Aufführungen und Kollaborationen kommt auch beim SPARK Festival für aktuelles Musiktheater 2022 ein neues Musiktheaterwerk von ihr zur Uraufführung. Seit 2020 ist Helena zudem künstlerische Leiterin des Avantgarten Festivals in Liedberg.

Helena Cánovas i Parés is a composer and studied at Conservatorio Superior de Música de Aragón (Saragossa) and Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln, where she continues to study electronic composition with Prof. Michael Beil. Her music was enriched through encounters with composers such as Beat Furrer, Chaya Czernowin, Tristan Murail, Sofia Gubaidulina, Ivan Fedele or Alberto Posadas. Among her international performances and collaborations is also a new music theatre piece of SPARK – Festival für aktuelles Musiktheater in 2022. Since 2020, Helena is also the artistic director of Avantgarten Festival in Liedberg.

"clamabant once again" was commissioned by the 1. Zonser Komponistinnen Festival, and it's part of my "once again" cycle where I work with an already existing piece and I stablish a dialogue with her author. For this ocasion I chose the piece "Duo Seraphim" by Caterina Assandra.

Songs for a future es mi primer Work in Progress, un libro de “canciones” que (espero) iré completando con los años y con diferentes formaciones.
Las tres primeras, Ancient Song, Canción del tiempo y el abismo y Love Song, tratan cuestiones acerca del desarrollo tímbrico y textural a través de elementos reconocibles y particulares, que actúan de “letra” de cada movimiento. El entramado rítmico y acústico esconde guiños a mundos diferentes, emociones internas e incoherencias de un mundo que ni es del pasado, ni del futuro.

Programme notes (Spanish):

Franck Bedrossian define la Distorsión del sonido / Saturación del significado como el sonido que proyecta un exceso de significado y que genera ambigüedades, tanto culturales como emocionales. Para él, "la saturación acústica provoca confusión poética". De una forma similar, he tratado de buscar una gradación en la energía sonora: desde la mayor violencia y complejidad de su química hasta la desnudez y la práctica ausencia de actividad. El título, poéticamente, refleja la búsqueda de una catarsis a través del caos y el exceso. En términos de color luz (RGB), el blanco se consigue al sumar todas las longitudes de onda del espectro, al contrario que en color pigmento (CMYK), en el que el blanco es la ausencia total de color. He buscado el blanco RGB, el negro CMYK y el mundo infinito entre ellos y sus opuestos.

The word emergere in Latin means “to emerge”, “to arise”, “to appear”. In a composition, individual sounds, as well as whole groups of sounds, may “emerge”. Specific articulation means that they may also gradually arise, slowly modulating the sound material of a composition. The slow emergence also concerns the higher level of organization of form. 

The title's source has associations with yet another concept, that of emergence. Emergence is a phenomenon, which was being described by the natural sciences as early as the 1920s and 1930s. It refers to a particular property of systems, which consists in the fact that the properties of the system as a whole cannot be deduced from the properties of its parts examined individually. In other words, when a system evolves and moves to another level of organization, it acquires new properties, which do not result from the combination of the properties of the system's individual elements (for example, the physical properties of the individual elements of air do not indicate that their mixture will enable sound waves to travel). 

In a composition based on the phenomenon of emergence, the superimposition of consecutive layers creates new sound qualities, which do not result from hearing them separately. Hence the concept of creating, at a global level of the composition, two layers α, and β, which sound by themselves compared to the way they sound combined. Layer α – Emergon α – is intended as an acoustic composition. The ensemble performs a fully autonomous composition based on the principles described above. Layer β – Emergon β – is composed using electroacoustic means. To this end, a computer software was written which transforms the algorithms used previously to build the score of layer α in real time. The use of more or less analogous compositional techniques unites the two layers, α and β, while the use of different performance apparatus clearly separates one from the other. In accordance with the title's etymology, as well as the conception of the work, these layers penetrate each other, and the 'emergence' of the title concerns the micro-, the macro- and the metaform. 

The concept of emergence has proved relevant mainly in natural sciences, but its influence can also be seen in human (philosophy) or social sciences (sociology, economics). The use of ideas fundamental to this phenomenon makes Emergon αβ; part of the 'art & science' trend - a creative attitude with the aim of commenting on science through art.
