DJ and label owner Linny Hex’s hallmark as one of Sweden’s most frequent techno DJ’s is to flourish on the borderland of night club and underground parties. Recognized from supporting Swedish electronic music on Swedish national radio you might have crossed paths with her as she performed at Department festival, Into the Valley or Norberg Festival. Today Linny balances her dj career with managing her vinyl only label Kvalia Records, already known as having cementing its position in the deep techno scene by releasing records produced by the likes of Psyk, Anthony Linell, Exos and Blazej Malinowski.

For the 110th edition of the podcast series, we have Dycide behind the decks. Hailing from Munich, he is an established producer, sound designer and DJ. He started a label IO records, as well as releases on Indefinite Pitch, Fur:ther sessions, T3K and Lowless Music. From 2014 onward, his focus was techno, coming from a minimalistic, deep drum and bass background.

This set is compromised of a mystic, deep and organic character which is enriched with acoustic elements containing textures related to deep techno, downtempo and ambient. Enjoy.

I find it very interesting to observe the range of different productions that fly under the banner of Dubtechno these days...

And although I like many of these variations, from the more ambient and chord-focused interpretations to the dry, atonal and polyrhythmic percussively  focused productions, I've been getting a sense lately that something is a little wrong. By this I mean since a certain point there has been a development towards a generic sound and format that somehow seems very superficial bringing the same flat and trivial sounds thrown together and promoted as  "Dubtechno"  and to me, often it seems like fast food compared to the original models. There is even  talk of a new wave. Both the production and the way it is presented seem somehow cheap, random and arbitrary to me. Often it is difficult if not impossible to avoid being interwined with these developments if you are enthusiastic about the often amorphous genre that is now labeled Dubtechno. 

Don't get me wrong I am not saying that there is no place for this "new sound" but the more I reflect on my enthusiasm - from my first exposure to dub and its techno hybrids, through rhythm & sound and through sound system culture in the late 90s to my renewed immersion in recent years, I realize that I should use the terms Dub and Dubtechno more and more carefully - coming from a place of a certain respect and appreciation. Because often these genres, carry a lot of cultural heritage, standing for a level of quality in delivery that in reality is hard to develop, and often lost to the disposable imitation economy we are beginning to see more and more of, which only serves to dilute things to an accepted average.

To me a big slice of what is promoted as Dub or Dubtechno these days falls well short of these original benchmarks that were set a long time ago. 

Through many conversations about these topics, reflecting on different perspectives, a mix was created recently where two fellows, I can call my friends, and I combined 3 sequential sets of 7 tracks each, to rest with and pay a little respect to some of the more remote but still relatable facets of dub in different ways. It's completely natural for styles to evolve and mix. It's great  to see with how much creativity and depth some artists do this.  And that's what this mix should stand for.

Welcome to Episode 240 on Poisonoise Music with this set coming in from Australian based artist Noosa Sound System. 

Noosa Sound System is a creative project initiated in 2020 by long time DJ, Producer and one time label boss, Chris H, originally from the UK - now living in Noosa (on Kabi Kabi Country) Australia.

Bio : 
"It's like a vehicle for the exploration of space, place and bass - without complications!", says Chris. Which to date, and to his surprise, has manifested in multiple productions and releases of Ambient, Minimal and Dub-techno music across more than a few respected  labels, with more to follow. "Using the Sound System tag, allows room for the project to evolve" says Chris, "and it pays respect to the original Jamaican roots influence embedded in electronic music culture, rather than any one individual, allowing for the music to do the talking instead!" Kerstin Saidykhan a.k.a. Sai has been a music nerd since her youth, influenced by styles like postpunk, dark wave, ska, jungle, DnB, and techno. Two trips to Jamaica in the late ’90s deepened her passion for dancehall and sound system culture, with the heavy basslines of dub and raggamuffin having a lasting impact on her. After the pandemic she established the podcast series “Moments Of Light And Darkness” and just began to release mixes by herself and after a certain time presenting guest mixes, too. The whole development since then was very organic where one thing leads to the other without a certain goal. There are plans to establish a yearly live event. To promote this Sai has built the MLD Compilation via an open call where producers could contribute with a track but stay anonymous. Sai loves to create deep atmospheric mixes around dub techno influenced sounds, combining the classics from earlier days with the current releases, often seasoned with the dub reggae vibes, some broken beats, ambient non beat or other experimental electronic stuff - sometimes darker, sometimes lighter. At the end it's all about moods and feelings from moment to moment what flows into the present time. According to that she calls herself Sai – MLD. MLD is the short form for Moments of Light & Darkness, related to a diverse spectrum in many ways.
