Our №23 release tribute to Mark Ward.

Julia Ward (Mark's wife):
"I feel very honoured to write these words as a tribute to my husband, Mark Ward, on the release of his final EP, which he completed two months before his death on September 23rd 2017. 

Mark was a self-taught musician. He bought his first guitar at the age of fourteen and continued to play guitar throughout his life. He was a highly competent artist, immensely creative and he had a wide range of interests, including literature, nature, photography, philosophy, spirituality and meditation. All these things influenced and inspired his music. 

Mark had an abstract, often playful way of looking at things, which fed into his sense of humour and fun. He was wonderful to be around. 

Mark was empathetic and cared about people and environments. He was kind, loyal, thoughtful and selfless. He never let his illness define or defeat him. He was brave, calm and uncomplaining and he remained upbeat right up until his death, which he approached with dignity. 

Mark had a wide range of musical tastes. Electronic music, however, became Mark’s passion and he loved being part of the online family of musicians and music fans. The friendships he made were very important to him, he always appreciated the support he received and he loved listening to and supporting the music of others. 

Mark finished composing and recording this last EP, ‘Release’ in July 2017. I am sure he felt he had reached a landmark with this piece of work and he was planning more music in a similar vein. The EP features Mark reading from ‘The Hollow Men’, by T.S. Eliot, whose poetry fascinated him, a mixture of field recordings, electronically manipulated sounds and percussion. 

Mark loved making this music, he was really happy with it and so pleased that it had been accepted by Hello Strange. I personally find it beautiful, awe – inspiring and captivating all the way through. When I listen to it I am transported. I know that Mark would hope that you enjoy it too.

"His music is difficult to describe as something static and recognizable. In his works Mark combines several qualities. 

Building a well-structured blend of ambient and dub techno sound, Mark resorted to field notes, recordings of ambient sounds, which makes his music even more interesting, and brings the listener as close as possible to the places and emotions (maybe even events) experienced by the author when writing this music. 

It is hard for us to find the right words that could express all the pain and worries about Mark's death, so we asked his darling wife Julia to write a story for this last EP. Here it is."
