Light Visions - France, painting and the birth of photography, presented by Tony Maniaty. 

Explore the shocking impact of photography on the 19th-century French art world and its significant influence on the impressionists and beyond. 

Traditionally, French artists saw photography’s ability to reproduce reality as a direct threat to their ‘life-like’ representations on canvas. As the medium advanced and painting styles changed, more adventurous artists embraced photography as a tool for capturing fleeting moments. By the early 20th-century, photography in France had become a recognised art form. 

Based in Paris and Sydney, Dr Tony Maniaty is an author, photojournalist and former associate professor of creative practice at the University of Technology Sydney. He is a widely published photographer, including his 2020 photobook Our hearts are still open: Paris with love and hope.

Explore the concept of Zen in relation to Lee Ufan and alternative ways of making, seeing and experiencing art with senior curator of Asian art Melanie Eastburn in conversation with religion expert Julian Droogan. 

Lee claims that Zen gives answers, but his work is all about questions. How can Zen help us understand Lee’s art? As embodiments of time and space or mediators of human connection, how do art objects help us attune to each other and the world around us?  

Melanie Eastburn is senior curator of Asian art at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

Dr Julian Droogan is an associate professor in the Faculty of Arts at Macquarie University and has a PhD in Studies in Religions. 

Their talk will be moderated by Kathryn Hunyor, a Japanese-speaking curator who is head of international tours at the Art Gallery Society of New South Wales.

Anthony Burke is a professor of architecture at the University of Technology Sydney. In 2012, he was co-creative director for the Australian Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale and directed the architecture symposium celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Sydney Opera House, with the Danish Cultural Ministry. Anthony hosts Restoration Australia on the ABC.
