MeowMeow & BowWow is the second EP in the series of video game tribute albums by Dj CUTMAN and Spamtron. Their first collaboration was Bagu and the Riverman, which later became the seed for The Triforce of Bass. Now, the duo has turned their focus to the classic title for Nintendo Gameboy, Link's Awakening. 

Dj CUTMAN writes: 
We selected seven songs that represented the significant steps in Link's journey, from awakening on the mysterious island of Koholint, to rediscovering his legendary weapon, traversing the country side, traveling through forests and dungeons, and climbing a mountain to meet the fabled Wind Fish. 

If you're familiar with the game, you'll take extra pleasure in listening to the album in-sequence. If you didn't play Link's Awakening, I hope you can still derive the sense of adventure and excitement the game created for me.

Ayoshutduff & Geckojsc - STAR SHIELD

Well. here's an interesting one I don't think I ever put up here. This is a Jesper Kyd inspired track that Groove and I made in 2013. If you've heard any music on Sega Genesis for games like Red Zone or Batman and Robin then you could probably spot the influence. We, of course put our own spin on things but we really had fun with this one as it's something different from what we normally do. Enjoy!

Brute Justice (Alexander Midas Final Boss) - FFXIV Chiptune

The second phase theme for Zurvan, in glorious Nintendo Edutainment System sounds. This is not playing on real hardware, but the track itself follows NES restrictions and someone with a lot of free time on their hands could punch this into FamiTracker.

What does NES/Famicom chiptune mean exactly? Using chiptune samples or an analog synth producing some basic waveform does not a chiptune make; while "8-bit sounds" or "chiptune sounds" are quite popular these days, a chiptune is something that is coming out of or would be faithfully reproducible on some specific sound chip. For example, in this case, we'd be talking about the Ricoh 2A03 chip, which used to power the sound of a NTSC NES. Each chip has its own distinct sound, together with their own set of limitations. Then again, part of the fun with chiptunes is making the most out of the limitations you have.

For example, the 2A03 has only two pulse channels, one triangle channel, one noise channel, one DPCM channel, mono output, no polyphony, final destination. On the other hand, having less channels doesn't necessarily mean more limitations - the SID chip in the C64 is pretty amazing in the right hands. SID has only three channel against 2A03's five, but they're much more flexible than what the 2A03 provides and you can get more out of them. NES channels are quite rigid in that they can only output one type of waveform. Compare two tracks with two different chips:

So tl;dr while this is not running on a real NES, this track could be reproduced pretty faithfully on one. :)
