Death ballads became popular in America during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Records such as Last Kiss, Tell Laura I Love Her, Ebony Eyes, Dead Man’s Curve, Leader of the Pack (mordantly referred to as splatter platters) exemplify those melodramatic scenarios. Nashville Phil’s Panhead Hydra Glide is a wryly affectionate nod to the genre. With its references to Marlon Brando & Lee Marvin in The Wild One, and to the totemic Harley Davidson motorcycle ridden by hell-bound womaniser Jump In Jim, the narrative unfolds with gripping inevitability. A blistering groove powered by kit drums, rockabilly bass and cranked up telecaster, this is one super-hot recording by one helluva band.
