Translation: Ghosts walk for nine days to become Ancestors. 

Nine is a very important number amongst the Akan. What is refered to as Dabonɛ( the bad day) in Jamaica is called Nine Night wake. In Jamaican tradition from the Akan, the deceased is mourned for 9 days as it is believed that the soul takes 9 days(an Akan day starts when the stars and moon are visible...dusk...night) to return to it's ancestral soil in the afterlife. On the 10th day, this is a Dapaa(the good day), the deceased is then celebrated and merry making is allowed. In Jamaica, the tradition remains unchanged. Lets just say the focus of this instrumental is the number 9, the arduous journey in the afterlife and of death.

Tano is a war god of the Asante people in Ghana, West Africa. Most Jamaicans descend from the Asante nation. The war god was called upon by Asantes that revolted during the slave trade. Likewise, the Asante nation is a warrior nation, hence Tano being the most important deity next to the creator and his father Onyame. Altars can still be found to the war god. When I created the band 12 years ago, I was always aware of our Asante ancestors, but their culture like Jamaican culture, is alot more obscure than the mainstream Orisha of Nigeria, which really has more to do with African descendants of Cuba and Brazil. I named the band "Orisha Shakpana" simply because I needed African material to write lyrics about. Every Jamaican knows about the Ashanti though and nothing about the other African nations. The Asante gods, the Abosom, are hidden in every Jamaican duppy(ghost) story and folk tale. My 2 year break was spent on unsolving that riddle of our true past as Jamaicans.
