So the Disquiet Junto assignment this week was simply to make a piece of music in 29/16 time. This is a super weird time signature. I remembered fooling about with Dilla-type beats using quintuplets (where you count 5s between every beat) and I figured exploring groups of 5 16ths might be worth it. It's a strange feeling to try and take a very mathsy approach, like fitting beats tightly on a fixed grid of 29 steps, and try to replicate some kind of "real" shuffle.

Regarded as the father of contemporary haiku, Masaoka Shiki was a poet and literary critic during the Meiji period Japan.

He advocated realistic observation by “sketching” (shasei) poems and going out into nature with notebooks, thus abandoning the traditional subjects of haiku of the time. His advice for an aspiring poet was, “Use both imaginary pictures and real ones, but prefer the real ones.”

This track was created for the 665th Disquiet Junto, a weekly music challenge. This week the challenge was to listen to the first Clicks + Cuts compilation and create something inspired by it. With the exception of the 808 drums all sounds are from field recordings I made around the house.

A thunderstorm, made with SuperCollider. There are three layers of sounds: rain, wind and thunder. 
There is a global envelope controlling the density of the raindrops and the thunder as well as the frequency of the wind. For the rain there are ticks of noise, but also a few drops falling on metal objects. I like that sound. 
For the wind there are two identical functions, one plays in the left channel and one plays right. Thunder is the most complicated of them all. It is filtered noise with a slow trigger for making a thunderclap and a fast trigger for the rumbling within a thunder. I added some FreeVerb to make it more spatial.

Imagine a box that is divided into smaller compartments. You start randomly throwing beads (or marbles or grains) into it. Wheneven one compartment is full, you stop. Check how many beads there are in a compartment whenever a bead falls and check the distribution of beads in the box after you stopped. Turn numbers into pitches. Or show numbers as ASCII-characters. For the latter you need to run the code in SuperCollider. The code is available at http://sccode.org/1-31X . For the complete experience you change maxValue to 255 and  you remove '+32' where shown.

Yeah, let's do the Bell Thing! The Bell Thing was inspired by an experiment that my brother did on his sampler, holding the keys down with boxes of musicassettes. Sounds great, looks ehm... interesting. There are several reasons to do this. First of all I definitely wanted to do The Bell Thing in SuperCollider. Furthermore tomorrow is my mother's 86th birthday and I was wondering if I could make a computercomposition that she would enjoy listening to. And finally it can be done with a tiny amount of code, so it could be a SCtweet. Here it is:

The Bell Thing

Remember Confetti 2, https://soundcloud.com/henklasschuit/discovering-supercollider04 ? There you heard only one oscillator at the time. In SuperCollider it is easy to use 100 oscillators at the same time, so while a distribution is made, you can hear sounds that correspond with all the values in the box. That doesn't swing at all, instead it gives a kind of Xenakis-like experience.

The search for prime numbers from 1 to 100 is represented by sound. Channel 1: the numbers, channel 0: the divisors. In the center: a fm-sound with a carrier that is related to the number and a modulator that is related to the divisor. A harmonic sound means the carrier is a multiple of the modulator, so the number is a multiple of the divisor. Therefor a harmonic sound means: not a prime number. When a new prime number is encountered, the list of prime numbers is played.
