Longhaul 026 - London Modular Alliance

If one were to imagine that some kind of divine musical intelligence had sprinkled extra-special talent in a few places on Earth, it's tempting to think that Hanover must be one of those blessed spots. Surprising, right? Yes, Hanover, the somewhat dull northern German city known for its trade fairs, consistently produces one talented artist after another. And now, we have Andere, whose debut album, "Alles Andere," on Kein Rauch ohne Feuer, continues the narrative of deep, yet raw electronic music. 

"Shifter" aligns with this tradition while infusing it with a playful and energetic twist. This six-minute surprise story begins as an almost melancholic dancefloor gem and then evolves into a euphoric sensation. You don't need any external stimulants for this track, I assure you. It elicits a warm and fuzzy feeling, takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions, and eventually explodes into a moment of collective embrace and intense feelings, teetering on the line between ecstasy and overwhelming emotion. What makes this track special is that it has a steady development but a lot of surprises. At times you feel cornered, surrounded by the different sounds and then fully embraced. 

It's been a while since I've been this convinced about a dancefloor track. However, pigeonholing Andere as just a peak-time track producer would be an underestimate; the album demonstrates that. Like many artists from Hanover, Andere possesses that special nectar that allows him to excel across an eclectic range of styles.

PREMIERE: Andere - Shifter [Kein Rauch ohne Feuer]

This is a re-recording of the full 3.5 hour live set that I played at Outra Cena, Lisboa, on 19/10/2023. The club was busy and the energy was high, and the pace and mood of the set reflects this. On the night, I found it quite hard work to monitor over the boomy reverb of the cavernous room, so my mixing was a lot more raw than it is presented here, with more chop and dynamic mixing tricks. However, I wanted mainly to commit the selection to record, as I was very satisfied with it.

Sukoshi Dake started in Tokyo’s underground electronic music scene, in venues such as VENT, Contact, Womb, Vision, Circus, Bonobo, Oath or Counter club. He co-founded “Bonne nuit”, to organize events in Tokyo and its surroundings, nurturing an ever growing passion for underground electronic music.

Henry Chow's productions lie at the musical intersection of a fine souffle and the most thorough enhanced TSA security groping. Always known for timeless funky bass lines and outer space melodies, Henry started the DJ voyage in 1996.

With his b-boy roots, his music interests started with hip hop, funk, and rare grooves, and expanded to include house, drum 'n bass, and eventually techno. He began buying techno music for Chemistry Records, where record store employee Tim Xavier would sneak Chow records to listen to.

By the turn of the millennium, he had started playing on the MKULTRA radio show on Rice University's KTRU 91.7 FM on a regular basis, and then moved on to throwing a string of warehouse parties featuring his raw, percussion-driven techno sound. Along the way, Henry released records on, among other labels, Marco Carola's Zenit imprint, that brought him gigs through out the States and overseas.

With his mind blown by one fateful visit to the Robert Johnson club during a tour through Germany, Henry came back to Houston to set the stage for what would eventually become a new musical direction in the studio, and a new series of events under the name Crossroads along with his friend Sasha Braverman. Together they have hosted one of Texas' longest running monthly parties, bringing to town some of the best talent from around the world.

Constantly reuniting new and classic sounds, Henry's DJ sets keep dance floors captivated and moved all night long.
