A live recording that's been hidden on my hard drive for quite some time now. I didn't know it at the time but this would be the last time I played before we went into lockdown, and also the last time I was to play at arguably one of London's best venues, Mick's Garage, before it sadly closed its doors for the final time. 

Music that night was very good with Tokn, Manfredas and Lena Willikens playing too.

A mix I made shortly before I set off on my travels.  One that has grown on me the more I listen to it. Deep and relatively slow to start, but progressively builds up throughout.

Opening Mix

I was so frustrated when I heard about the forced closure of the Arches in Glasgow, and then the attempted closure at Fabric (amongst others), but I never realised my hometown club would ever come under pressure. The Reading Rooms in Dundee represents so much in the small city. It's brought some amazing artists to Dundee but most importantly, it's created an incredibly special community. When I lived in Dundee and went to the club most weekends I felt a sense of belonging that I have never quite felt since. 

With news of the V&A coming to town, and recognition from the Wall Street Journal even calling it one of the 'hottest locations' in the world amongst the likes of Shanghai and Madagascar(!), I think most people thought the city was ‘on the up’. Sadly, however, this is coming at a cost to places like the Rooms. Gentrification is slowly creeping into the city and pressure from the council and police are literally grinding the business to the ground. 

I am hearing sad stories about the Police presence (in and outside of the club) from friends who are local promoters. People are now intimidated to go and as a result, the club is losing money and so are the promoters.

To close a venue down like The Reading Rooms would be yet another great venue being lost to the horrors of gentrification. The sense of community and the education that it will teach other youngsters (as it taught me) will all be gone, and will make Dundee significantly less special to live in. 

In a show of support, I've made a new mix for the club and the efforts to 'Keep it'. I've also copied a link to a good read from The Skinny about the whole situation. A way of showing support would be to grow the awareness of this whole story. 

The club now needs more support than ever. Not just a casual show of support on social media, but by actually heading to the club, spending money on the bar, and on the tickets.

Back in January, I opened Mick's Garage before Bruce, Peach and Courtesy. Here's what I made of the transition from one empty room to a healthy-looking floor full of dancers - enjoy :)

Henry first started out on his brother’s Technics at the age of 15 and was later exposed to a very tight-knit scene in Dundee where he learnt his craft by watching residents at the small town club, Reading Rooms.

He went on to DJ throughout his time at uni in clubs across Manchester, this included running his own events where he booked guests like Harri and Domenic, residents of Sub Club's, Subsculture. 

More recently, Henry has been living in London and is a resident at Origins. This has seen him DJ in venues such as Mick’s Garage (now known as Colour Factor), NTs Loft, Corsica Studios and his regular spot at Night Tales, to which he has also become a resident of. Over the years Henry has warmed up for the likes of Sally C, John Talabot, Tama Sumo, Peach, Lena Willikens, Vladimir Ivkovic , Steffi, Virginia, Nick Hoppner, Axel Boman and many more.

You may also catch Henry playing more down-tempo, deep, and Balearic sounds in bars across London such as Crate Brewery.
