Though the knife edge of our youth has been dulled by the years
you alone kept the cosmic fires in your eyes alive 
nourished by the dust and the spiral shape of destruction 
there you stayed

darkly unchained from the earth

while I returned to the lilies of Eostra 
my primal innocence, that empty homecoming 
it was then in that innocence that sometimes I would miss the seasons of the street, the corners where the monsters slept in the paths of dissonance

I would shop all day in the Alephs markets to find a trace of that time 
to buy a token of that winter of our first embrace, long, brutal, tender

but I suppose more beautiful things than you or I have had shorter lives
beauty flashing quickly before being swallowed into the maw of hell 
don't fret they would say, the ugly live as long or longer, matters not which one you are. Cherish the flesh as God does not, cherish the flesh as God does not. For we all dance in the arms of Shiva as he spins, our atoms in motion, even when we rest. And when he lets go, there we stand before his gates, facing the doors of his whirlwind halls, flung and bewildered. Behind the first is that monster street of our self knowing darkness, (where angels fear to tread), beyond the next is the garden of second chances, the third the forest of return, the fourth a boat anchored to a dock in the sea, the fifth full of shining towers glinting light from the sun, there they are the doors spread out like a tarot of the stars in eternal skies. Anyone you choose is transcendence in time, in time you will have learned all five. For there is nothing, nothing as golden as when the self reflects in turn the city and these flowers, petals of being, realities. The city and the flower are your inheritance, in harmony or dissonance. And even when the leaves are falling to eventual decay you will still be in motion, dancing entropic, dancing your entropy. Choose if you will then that destruction, let your beauty live a half life. I will not pull you back or put out your cosmic fires. For either way, either way you go, we will meet again in infinity brother.

Heralds of Lightning is the solo project of singer songwriter Janessa Ann James who hails from Orange County, Ca. After graduating from Musicians Institute she began a series of conceptual solo projects, writing most of the music herself and recording with friends at various studios. In 2010 she met Mike Troolines who owns Sound Asylum studios in Santa Ana where all of the Last Lights of Evening album was recorded and produced. 

Her dusky melodies and poetic songwriting combine with a dark romantic nostalgia both conceptual and philosophic. Last Lights of Evening touches on themes ranging from our place in eternity, the twilight of excess and failure, time and love to a loss of wildness which leaves us feeling hazy and disconnected from our feelings. From the haunting instrumental track of "dusk interlude" to the heaviest track on the album "Ghost at the wheel" Last Lights of Evening retains its subdued sunset atmosphere.
