Miniatur für Molly

One of my sad pieces, and totally new. Completed in its raw form today 11 Oct 2023 and started as a sketch only 5 days ago. It is about fall as a time of dying nature before winter comes. In these days with several cruel wars going on at the same time I feel unable to write glad music. All my pain and sorrow about these ongoing wars and all their innocent victims on all sides is included. As usual I can only offer a crude MIDI recording with synthetic string sound.

Bagatelles For Winds 2,1

These four idyllic pieces were written during the last two weeks. I made them for a good old friend of mine. The pieces are scored for violin and classical acoustic guitar. Here only bad poor MIDI-recordings directly from the score program can be offered. These pieces are intended to be simple plain entertainment for the audience. The scores will soon be available for download and free use for everybody from my composers homepage on IMSLP.

4 neue Idyllen für Geige und Gitarre

Here comes my complete string quartet no 7. It is scored in F sharp minor and takes about 38 minutes to perform. It comprises 6 movements: I Moderato II Andante III Scherzo - Presto IV Passacaglia V Intermezzo VI Allegro molto. The movement V is only a short but separate introduction to the final movement VI. I wrote this string quartet last summer and fall, and now I decided to do the final "finework" with all the dynamics. During writing I felt a little like sitting in a deep hole, surrounded by giant mountains and their deep shadows. The names of these mountains were Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms. Of course I can not do what they did, but when you are sitting in a hole, also a few small steps will be uphill. So 'I did it my way'. It is allowed to make an attempt. Here comes my attempt. As usual a bad MIDI recording.

While in the early stages of writing this piece, I read a poem by Ursula K Le Guin that ends with the line: “This weight that wants to fall, and falling, sing.” Though the poem is about a pestle, it struck me that the line also works as a description of a violin bow. For whatever reason, in that moment my concept of the piece clicked into place, and this work explores the nuances of repetition, weight, friction, and, much like the metaphoric pestle, what is released through friction. It is dedicated to my dear friend and mentor Roger Zahab.

Music does not have to be nice to the ear and does not have to follow trends and "schools". But it must come from your heart and soul and convey everything you want to say but cannot express in words.
