Herb Records 2013, which was officially released on November 5, 2013, includes the musical works of Congo Sanchez, Hydrophonics, and Groove Status. Their complementary skills and sounds are compiled into a 40 minute mix - bringing the vibe of the Herb Records collective to your eardrums for the first time. This organic approach to studio production pays homage to classic downtempo, trip/hip-hop, and dub reggae, with a modern blend of moombah, dance, and world-funk rhythms. This compilation sets the tone for the launch of Herb Records, the music label founded by Congo Sanchez, drummer of Thievery Corporation.

Congo’s time touring and recording with Thievery Corporation has had an incredible influence on his sound; his multifaceted experiences shine through the aesthetic delivered in this mix. His new sounds accentuate his drumming roots, showing a progression into a percussion-heavy mix for the dance floor. Hydrophonics, an experienced producer and live-looping genius, adds a crisp layer of consistently fresh sounds and urban-inspired beats. His track, “Sunrise,” is an awakening introduction to the mix. Groove Status is a master of all that is funky, with a groove-hop flavor that adds a smooth bounce to electronic dance tunes. His first track enters the mix at about twelve minutes in, with a sexy vibe that lives up to its name, “Love Sauce.” The three artists together make up the high-grade sound that is Herb Records.

German hip-hop is an oxymoron. Fortunately, Germans listening to hip-hop is not, and Germans mixing hip-hop is a darn fine thing indeed. Especially when aforementioned Germans engage in frenetic turntablism to do so, becoming party-starting whizz-kids on the wheels of steel.
And what’s even better is when those Germans take that love of hip-hop and infuse it with the most gut-rumbling subs around to form a bastard bumping house offspring, all swagger and step, and in doing so find favor with that West Coast tastemaker Mr Claude VonStroke. @bju is that German, a true child of hip-hops golden generation with a tendency to go off on bass-bump-house tangents, perhaps the only one of his kind and all the more precious for it.

We asked Stereo:Type about the process of making this mix, and here is what he had to say:

"When you're commissioned to make a mix for DJ Shadow, you know you have to pull something special out of the bag. Making sure it was a musical experience was as much a key part of this as making it a hype mix to listen to, considering you are working with material by a guy whose process involves finding sounds which work together as though they were made for one another. When i was approached to do this, I was asked to make the mix using material either sampled by, or remixed for or by Shadow. So Instead of making it a straight up one track into another kind of mix, I tried to approach it like a live performance, deconstructing tracks into their component parts then re-assembling and combining them with my own take on it. I certainly hope people have as much of a blast listening to it as i did making it."

Stereo:Type's DJ Shadow Re-Mixtape

In 2009, I consulted for, and appeared in, Activision's DJ Hero video game.   As part of my involvement, I performed at quite a few industry events and eventually did a couple of club dates.  Some of these sets were more rehearsed than others, and the quality varied.  This one, recorded live on Halloween night at a KCRW benefit, was far and away my favorite of the bunch...both in terms of technical display and song selection.  I'll post some of the other recorded sets later, there's some nice moments along the way.- DJ Shadow
